Suggestions on how to voice our displeasure without looking like a douchebag?

I know I probably am going to get some heat for this and I can't wait for the barrage of insults to come my way for not being a "true" fan despite being a season ticket holder from the beginning and attending and watching all the games.

I fully expect us to lose our next two on the road. There is absolutely nothing to suggest we won't get killed. We haven't won a road game in over a year and look like crap on the road during the Kubiak era. Obviously, I want us to win both games. I have always watched the games either on TV for road games and at Reliant. I always have gone to preseason games as well.

For my sanity, I am instituting a personal boycott and am not going to watch the Colts game. I have Sunday Ticket and will be watching all of the other games instead.

Our next home game is a Monday nighter on Dec. 1 against the Jags. Its our first Monday night game since 1994. We are going to have media attention and unfortunately for the rest of the country, we will be the only game on that night.

I would like to use that opportunity to show that I as a fan and season ticket holder am extremely pissed and unhappy at the state of our team. I want to convey the fact that we Texans fans are not going to be satisfied with the status quo going into next year and that a sacrificial lamb firing while necessary in the case of Richard Smith (IMO he should have been canned after his 1st year) is not enough. To borrow from our President-elect, we need fundamental chage in how we do things now.

I am not looking to make myself into a spectacle or attract attention to myself. I would be willing to wear a non-descript pin or t-shirt in a show of solidarity with my fellow suffering Texans fans. There of course is the whole paper bag on your head but that comes close to douchebaggery.

Basically, I had a lot of respect for Lions fans showing their disgust and outrage with the Matt Millen regime. "Fire Millen" chants were heard all over Michigan even at non-Lions or football games. They wore t-shirts to that effect and basically have voiced frustration in not winning anything since 1957 and having only 1 playoff win since that time. I respect that as a fan and now that they have been beaten down by the suckitude but they still care and are not apathetic. I want the football world to know that we Texans fans are a loyal and hardy bunch and that we are not happy with the state of our team.

The differece with Houstonians is we are nicer and more mellow. As a fanbase we care. Do y'all feel the same way wanting to express your displeasure but not wanting to create a spectacle out of yourself. I take no pleasure in wanting to do this and desperately want us to be a winner. I don't like to boo but have booed several times (especially the last game) when it came to performance of our team and coaching. Booing is not enough.

What are your thoughts?

Rep for this post. Some times, when I am really feeling the anger, I want to make a sign or something. But then I think, I don't want to be THAT guy.
 
My perception is to wear shirts or have signs that say "Fire Kubiak" or things to that effect just make the franchise and city as a whole look weak, unwanted and basically make them out like the team is some sorta joke. The announcers or sports writers will probably talk and write about it and that just brings more attention to what shambles the franchise is in. I think it just makes the franchise and city look even worse, when the fans do things like that.

Let's take Detroit, again, for example. If I turn on the tv and see them playing, I know the fans aren't happy, that they want their team to get better and win. I don't have to see tshirts, signs or paper bags to know they are embarrassed. It's when they call even more attention to the fact that they look like a joke and embarrass the franchise even more. I have more respect for them when I see them supporting their team, rooting for them to win even though they're going 0-16 than for them to throw the team/coach/whoever under the bus while going 0-16.

Those are just my thoughts and opinions. I think if you were to do something like wear a "Fire Kubiak" t shirt, it'd just call more attention to the country about how much we suck right now... and that's not really going to make things better.

If anything I'd get straight and to the point, honest and somewhat funny. Just have a sign that says something like, "I wish we would win more." And sport a frown while your wearing it. I think it'd be funnier to see a fan like that than being pissed off at the team.

Up here at UVa the football stadium actually outlawed all signs because there were too many "Fire Groh" signs being displayed.

I think some signs are good, but not all. Like OMT said, you have to make them funny if you can. We don't want to make the city look like a joke

I appreciate your feedback and see what your saying. Again, I don't want to make a spectacle of myself or try to get on TV or anything like that. That is why I created this thread. I guess I am just frustrated with the lack of any input that we fans have with regard to the "product" we are buying in the Texans. Don't show up to the games to show your displeasure you are wasting money and the national perception becomes that we are bad fans. Show up and stew in the misery and McNair doesn't get the message that the natives are restless. I guess that is my frustration.

I can't even think about wearing a shirt that says fire Kubiak. Waaay too negative for primetime. The empty seats will be embarrassing enough.

Often, you can make your point better with humor especially when the situation is anything but funny.
 
I've been thinking about this....

If you normally buy 4 beers per game, cut back to 3.
If you normally buy 3 hotdogs per game (piggy), cut back to 2.
etc.
etc.
etc.

x 60,000 adds up.


Revenues will drop, but in an inconspicuous way, but will still be felt.

I call BS. We Houston sports fans are notorious for giving our teams multiple chances. I don't think you can do it if you are a true Texan fan.

Best way to support the team is to support football in Houston on MNF.

Decked out and loud.

Show free agents that this is a great destination to come to.

Hopefully the team will be competitive over the next couple of weeks and for that game, or it will be a long time before we get another MNF or much of anything prime time.

Whoever the coaches end up being on the team, we need to put on a good show. To make TV want to come back.

I don't think Detroit is a place you want to emulate, and I am sure that McNair already knows that the fans are pissed.

I'm with that. There isn't any bigger show peice during the regular season than MNF, and Houston fans at least need to be backing the team from the start. If things go bad then start booing, but at least give the impression of the fanbase being behind the team.

Thank you for bringing reason back to this thread. I'm just as angry as many of you are about our so-called progress. I like TexansFight's idea for a boycott but not during our first prime time MNF game. We need to show the world that we love our team. We are fans who get behind our team.

I tried to do a search for the video of our opening drive on youtube but it appears to have been taken off. If anyone could repost that, it'd be great because I know I need a pick me up and a reminder of how happy the city of Houston was to have football back. That's what we all need to remember. Remember how loud it was before/during/after the opening kick off. I'll never forget it. We all need to remember that.

Yeah, by trying to band together a group of fans into wearing shirts that show his displeasure for the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football. At least, that is how I understood his post to mean?

dude has season tickets, a PSL, and has been posting on our message boards since before 2002....I'd say he has a right to voice his displeasure. I'm gonna support my home team as much as I can too, but I'm gonna make sure the Texans know I'm not satisfied in the least bit myself. I'm sure a couple of the webmaster guys who write for the team are sick of my text messages. :tiphat:
 
we as fans would look like tools if the t-shirt idea would get some airtime, and then have our team win the game.

I don't wnt to be labeled as a fickle fan so I'll support the team they put out on the field...as usual and probably to a fault.
 
The entire point is moot. You can't get more than a half dozen Houston sports fans to participate in anything "synchronized" at one time. It will never be noticed because too many of the people at the game won't even be there because they love football or the Texans or the NFL. They'll be there because somebody they know has season tickets and didn't want to go or because their company had seats and wasn't using them. They'll be there because it's fun to sit inside the little concourse area in the expensive section and talk with friends, see and be seen, and maybe watch a little of the game on all the television sets.

I see your point TexansFight and like the idea but I just don't think that the Texans inspire enough "passion" to get you many participants.

Let me ask you this... would you be saying that I don't have enough passion because I'm not a fan of pulling a statement like that on national TV at this juncture in our short history. I'm just as upset as the next person but I believed that Kubiak was the answer. I believed that Schaub would take us to the next level. I genuinely believed that we were headed in the right direction up until now. I'm now starting to question our coaches and the direction that the team is headed in.

I'm more of an advocate of letting McNair know this rather than having it blasted all over national TV. McNair made a statement the other day that leads me to think that he's heard us and he's listening. The hot seat is growing hotter by the game now. If no major changes are made next season then maybe I'll be one of those joining in with TexansPride and his national statement.

I guess I'm saying... talk to the boss before you embarrass him on TV. Give him a shot to fix the problem. Just how long have we been clamoring for Kubiak's head here? Not really all that long.

To Vinny, I definitely think he's earned the right to state his displeasure. So have I. I'm just not ready to embarrass our organization by blasting them just yet. I need a little more time before I start to get really angry.
 
I don't know what the guys could do, but for the beautiful Texan women.. you could wear a shirt that says "f*ck the *insert phrase or coach* " instead of f*ck the Eagles and get a spread in maxim

Don't buy merch

The comapny I work for sells tickets and by the trends we are seeing, if the Texans keep dropping a deuce on the field every week the "sell out" streak will come to an end.

It will be a pretty good time to buy cheap season tickets though

Something witty like that would be good. I also liked the posts with the images of Richard Smith's defense being snuggly soft. The whole reason I posted this thread is to gauge the thoughts of fellow Texans fans.

Again, I am not trying to embarrass myself or cause a scene but I think an expression of our frustration is warranted. The problem is the potential of looking like a douchebag or jerk is great.

Thinking about it, if we suck again, raining the field with loud boos would probably be noticed more and commented upon than wearing a T-shirt or bringing in a sign. I wish it would have never have come to this. However, if Rosenfels has another TO party and Kubiak continues with horrid time management I would hope I wouldn't be the only one in my section getting up and booing the hell out of the team.

In short, if we suck on MNF, I would hope our fans would respond with loud boos since getting anything organized with Houston fans is probably a hopeless cause.

The thing that kills me about the Texans is the lack of the sense of urgency. Richard Smith deserved to have been canned after his first year. I would think virtually every franchise would have canned him after next wear. Let's assume Kubiak is back another year. I don't think he is the guy to get where we want to be. If we fire him after next year we will be putting off getting to the playoffs for another 3 years. We can't wait that long.

People are entitled to boo but I don't see the point. If it doesn't help and gives comfort to the opposing team, then I want nothing to do with it. It is traitorous behavior.

Booing is the only visible thing that we fans can to express our displeasure while at a game. When I boo, I am not in any way trying to aid the other team but rather to make it known that what's going on the field is unacceptable. If there is a lot of booing because of continued horrid play that might finally spur a sense of urgency. Who knows, its not like we have any real say unfortunately.

Free agents don't want to come here because we suck not because we have a disgruntled fan base. If an angry fan base was a huge factor in determining where free agents go, then Philadelphia would never land free agents since they are extremely quick on the trigger with boos despite having a good deal for close to a decade now. They have been able to attract Asante Samuel and other free agents since they have been a playoff team for close to 10 straight seasons and because their organization is considered to be amongst the best in football. It doesn't hurt that Jim Johnson is considered amongst the best DC in the NFL.

Believe me, fans booing crappy play will not change the perception of this town. Houston is perceived (rightfully) to have a soft sports media and a very forgiving fan base.

Have you truly seen any Texans fans wearing paper bags already. I haven't seen that yet and I generally get to the stadium early and walk the concourse.

It has to be a combination of FA + draft.
 
if Mcnair thinks he is doing whats right for the team then no amount of booing is gonna change his mind. the only way to get him to listen would be not showing up at all. then eventually he has to listen whether he wants to or not.

I don't know, but empty seats dont' mean much (in my mind and they are already paid for) season tickets mean much more

season tickets may not even have much of an impact. If ticket brokers stop buying massive chunks of seats, the coveted "sell outs" will go by bye. If the resale market tanks (and it has) then things will really start to add up
 
iam not to concerned with our team every year we are mostly middle of the pack or king of the losers ranking

at least we havent sucked for decades like some teams

now if we go 15 years and still havent gotten to the playoffs or win a superbowl then i will worry

Your tolerance for shitty football is more than what 99% of even the diehards can stomach. Just to remind you the last time the city of Houston had a NFL team in the playoffs was more than FIFTEEN YEARS AGO. To put that in perspective, I am 33 going on 34 years old. I have been out of law school for 7 years now and have a career. The last time Houston was in the playoffs I was a FRESHMAN IN COLLEGE. We have fans in their early 20s who have never seen a winning team in this town much less a playoff team.

Don't say anything at all. Well, you know, just be very tame i.e. make the seat attendants totally happy. Don't stand and don't cheer just like they want you to. Something good happens? Just notice it and go...hmm, that was cool. An extremely tame, 3/4 full stadium on MNF would be opinion enough, it would just be hard to get everyone to play along because so many care about the team.

It also might cause them to turn up the speakers, so bring some ear plugs. I wish they would turn them down anyway...or maybe just not fill every second in the stadium by blasting Clay F'ing Walker 30,000 more times. Or the band that plays way too loud right next to the concessions at halftime. What a dumb idea that was...

If you want to be heard but still go to the game, don't buy consessions and gear. It would take a concerted effort by 15% of the crowd or more, but that would be felt.

It is unlikely to happen though, because if a person is at the game, those beers, food, etc. are a big part of the experience.

I think that when the TV shows people with sacks on their heads or signs pointing out how they think their home team stinks, it makes the whole fan base look like goof balls.

Hey, Eric Winston said it in pre-season, there is not much difference between 11-5 and 5-11, a few breaks, and you'll be on the good side. Right now, I think the best thing to be would be to show up EARLY, WEAR RED and BE LOUD.

Enjoy the opportunity to cheer, to get away for a few hours from the economy mess, the war and other day to day issues, and just be TEXANS Proud and the fact that we actually have pro football in the city.

Enough of the negativity, it's bad karma.

As usual, Texans Chick nailed it. Booing is a waste - if you are going to be vocal, do it in a positive way or save your breath. Booing only further demoralizes your team that needs to regroup on the sidelines anyway. I wanted to punch some of those "we want Sage" chanters at the Miami game. Idiots.

If you don't like the team, stop buying season tickets. Go to the games you have paid for and cheer your team on, or give your tickets to someone who actually wants to be there. Don't buy 10 $10 beers each game if you are not happy. The message will get across better than any booing or stupid signs that make you look dumb will ever do.

I could start a whole other thread about Houston sports fans and the Luv ya blue and early 90's era, but I'll save that for another time. House of Pain we are not.
 
Real simple. Support our team even as the BAD times continue, or give your tickets to someone who will and stay at home. There's lots of organizations out there who would LOVE to take some kids to a game, esps MNF. Wearing a bag on your head, holding up an ig*orant sign, wearing a "fire" anyone shirt, does nothing but make YOU look like a fool. That's JMO!!!! If nothing else, have a little respect for those of us who will be there supporting our team on the National stage.

Be there, wear red, take your anger out on the Jags!!! Might just make ya feel better!
 
I go to NFL games because I love the NFL....now the Texans are my local team but we really haven't bonded yet because I think you get an emotional attachment when you start to win games when winning games means something. I'm a pretty competitive person so perhaps this desire to win is something that all you guys that love to support a loser don't have as deeply as I do...not saying that is a trait that eveyone needs to have, afterall, you may be more nurturing person than I am...takes all kinds, but I'm disgusted with this team right now, but I'll go to every single game I can go to 'cause at least one team in the house is playing NFL ball every Sunday.
 
You can bet there will be people in the stands for the Jag game with bags over their heads sitting there very pleased with themselves about how funny, clever and original they are.

Don't buy 10 $10 beers each game if you are not happy. The message will get across better than any booing or stupid signs that make you look dumb will ever do.

I could start a whole other thread about Houston sports fans and the Luv ya blue and early 90's era, but I'll save that for another time. House of Pain we are not.

So we should go and not voice our opinion about a bad product? We the customer can complain our steak is not cooked enough or dude you made the truck worse repairing it, but its idiocy to voice our opinion on a product we pay good money for? Last I checked if your product or service sucks you do what you need to FIX it right and if that means change of staff or players in this case you do it. Yelling is part of the game and if you don't boo, they don't know. If I want my product and service to be better and they want my money, I seriously doubt they will say will then don't eat here or don't come to our games anymore because we voiced that they're product sucks.

I think at least two teams are playing NFL ball each game, unless we got permission for the Texans to beat up on some college or semi-pro teams? Just kidding.

I guarantee you that I am every bit as competitive as you are and I am just as disgusted as you, because I want to see this team succeed in the worst way. I've been there when our teams have been good (late seventies and early 90's Oilers) and bad (early seventies and early to mid eighties Oilers along with 02-06 Texans). I just don't give up that easily. I look for ways to help the team win, and putting a bag over my head or booing don't seem like ways to do that. I also did not jump on the Oilers bandwagon after they started winning, and I'm not doing that with the Texans either. The beauty of it is that you can choose to jump on when they start doing well; it's great to have choices. My choice is to use every bit of my ability to help the team win.

Have you ever heard that silence speaks volumes? Booing is the lazy approach to trying to fix things. Money talks - don't buy season tickets and $10 beers. Booing doesn't indicate passion, it indicates fickleness and lack of intelligence.

I don't make much noise at the games but I don't mind when the fans boo when the product is awful. We took a ton of bad football around here before we unleashed some of our disgust. It's time this franchise grew up. Booing means you care....silence is scary.
