Draft Countdown's Scott Wright's mock draft: Texans take Michael Johnson (DE)

What do you think? We definitely need a DE to compliment Mario, & MJ is an outstanding athlete. But, with Vontae Davis (CB), Malcolm Jenkins (CB), & William Moore (S) still on the board (in this mock scenario), would MJ be the best value at this point? Or, would you trade down to select a LB like Curry or Cushing?

I like what I've seen so far, but would he be the right selection for us at #7?

Right position; wrong player. Orakpo -> Hardy -> Johnson. The only reason you pick Johnson is potential, and IMO Orakpo and Hardy have almost the same level of athletic ability; except the height.

They are more complete players right now with pass rush ability beyond their natural talen, and they have motors that don't quit. Johnson takes plays off, and doesn't pursue when the play goes away from him. No thanks.

However, if Johnson is a Top 10 pick it will be based more on potential than production.

From this fan's perspective, this statement disqualifies this prospect for the Texans should they only have one first round pick by the draft. We need immediate production.

Maybe they won't do it this time, but the Texans haven't been afraid to take players based upon potential alone (Okoye & D.Brown). You might even consider taking Mario as having gone against all conventional thinking with Bush & VY available.

As for MJ taking plays off, I seem to remember that same label being put on Mario as well. If he has the kind of freakish talent some are saying he does, why not take the best available talent? The Texans are still a couple of years away from being real contenders. That's plenty of time for his potential to be developed. I watched Orakpo play last week & wasn't real impressed with what I saw. But, that's just one game.

Definatly dont want Moore. IMO he is overrated as is MJ. I would rate Mauluga, Davis, Jenkins, Curry, Marino, Orokpo, Selvie, D Robinson, Chase Cofman and even C Alex Mack who are all available over MJ.

Have you watched MJ? Athletically they arent much different but Orakpo has produced more against better competition. IMO the edge goes to Orakpo for potential and production. At least to this point.

Far too early to make a realistic mock .... But with so many outstanding players left on the board in that scenario , I'd look to drop back a few spots and take one of the S or OLB's .... getting a specialist in the first round isnt my idea of getting value for the pick.

Only briefly in one game, but he looked very good from what I saw.

I can accept this argument, but with the talent that Texas has, isn't it possible that his playing with far superior talent helps him to put up better numbers?

I have to agree with you on this. As much as I'd love to see a real DE opposite of Mario, an extra draft pick or two would go a lot further towards our ultimate goal. We do need help at OLB & one of Curry or Cushing might be the answer.

Xavier Adibi hasn't had a chance to prove what he's worth yet... the fact that they have not put him on IR at this point in the season tells me they really think he can contribute - or that they desperately want to get a look at him in game action to see what he's made of... so I wouldn't really be crazy about taking an OLB early in the draft unless that USC kid falls into our laps. Man, what an animal.

I firmly believe you work from front to back. DLine, LBs, then DBs.... so if there's a top-rated DE on the board in the first round - not a project, not a guy the team considers risky - but a top-rated DE - I say go that way first.

I keep reading that Orakpo's draft stock is rising week after week... we may not be bad enough to have a chance at him.

If the Texans end up with the #7 pick overall, I will be both surprised and very disappointed.

That being said, if regardless of their pick the Texans exit the first round with Orakpo, Hardy or Johnson I will be very pleased with that.

I'll have to disagree with you on this one. Not about Cushing, because I don't think he is a first rounder. But Aaron Curry, WOW! This guy is Patrick Willis, ACC version. I wouldn't mind seeing him taken by the Texans in the first round.

Yes its possible. But who on that DL is really that great? They are all good but no one thats really dominating.

I don't use Scott Wright anymore @ Draft Countdown. I do like how they cleaned up their web page however :)

As it stands right now the Texans are picking 10th not 7th & after beating the Bengals later today its going to be even higher than that so I'd forget about Michael Johnson. Anyways he is a very similar player to Jamaal Anderson taken in the 07 draft (#7 overall) by Atlanta, nice player not fareing a whole lot better than Amobi Okoye with only 16 tackles & one sack.

Brian Orakpo is a much better fit as is George Selvie both true RDE's. At this time Brian is becoming overvalued while George is undervalued. So I feel come next April that Selvie will be the more likely pick based on both fit & availability.

Aaron Curry would also be an awesome pick, say goodby to Greenwood. very productive impact player who is durable as oppossed to Cushing.

Safety would come down to William Moore, can play FS or SS. I'd say he replaces Demps and/or Ferguson so thats excellent value. Taylor Mays is a prototypical SS ala the late great Sean Taylor. He would bring a real physical aspect to the secondary & in blitz packages.

Don't rule out CB. several fine corners coming out including Alphonso Smith, Vontae Davis & Malcolm Jenkins.

bottom line- defense, defense & more defense :d:

I can't imagine the Texans passing on a player like Rey Maualuga or for that matter him being the second ILB picked.

I would love to see the Texans draft Maualuga and move Ryans to Weakside LB. Of course, I don't want this to happen unless the Texans were to trade up to get him, because it would mean the Texans will have to loose many more games this season. I guess there is always the possibility that he drops to us but I just don't see that happening.

I agree it has to be DEFENSE in the first. I noticed you mentioned Blitz packages.... Are we getting a new and better DC ????

I wouldn't mind seeing the Texans take a chance on a guy like DE Kenny Mainor as an UFA. I'm pretty sure he is going to drop like a rock on Draft Day. He tore up his knee this year and he was suspended for 2 games following an arrest for marijuana possesion in 2007. Despite all of that, the kid does have talent. It wouldn't hurt to give hima shot as an UFA.

Actually Jamal Anderson was thte 8th pick by Atlanta. Remember we traded the 8th pick to them for the 10 th pick? It was kind of a shocker that Atlantas coach would pick J Anderson over his former teams young DT Okoye. Anyway dont see the comparison of Jamaal Anderson and M Johnson.

Jamaal was more of a freak like Mario Williams in that he was not only tall but weighed 280 lbs with great speed for his size. Micheal Johnson on hte other hand is more of a Demarcus Ware type. Tall, slender and lightning fast. He hasnt been as productive this year but with his measureables he will likely be rated highly by the scouts after the combine.

If that draft position, #7, were to come true I hope the Texans would trade down with someone and pick up extra picks in the 1st and/or 2nd rounds. That #7 draftee would be real expensive and we've got lots of holes to fil with the extra picks. If we traded down maybe we could pick up Aaron Curry a little later in the 1st round and then pick up one of the outstanding centers, safeties, or DT's coming out this year later in the 1st or really early 2nd round.

Orakpo may be a bigger freak than Mario (I know he is strength wise). If he is sitting there, you have to take him.

Orakpo + Cushing in the second would be killer

Well all I know about him is every time I flip Georgia Tech on....the guy is hobbling back to the bench for a break. Could be he's giving it up for the team and playing hurt. Or it could be he's a prima dona and believes his poop don't stink. I dunno. What I do know is that chit will last about two season with Kubes as the ring master. And you can take that one to the bank. If you're hot for a DE opposite Mario, drop down and take the kid from San Jose State. He's got no press clippings or draft gurus banging the drums for him. All he is doing is whipping every ones a$$ that they are playing in front of him. And he doesn't hobble to the bench.

Like I said in my first post, if we had the #7 pick I would hope that the Texans would trade down for extra 1st or 2nd round picks and fill more holes but if not then there are several players I'd like to have before Michael Johnson. I watched the GT/Clemson game and the man has no motor and takes many plays off. He's got the physical skills and size and if anyone ever really motivates him he could be awsome but right now he's a 2nd round talent at best. Taking MJ at #7 would mean that we'd be passing on Brian Orakpo, Greg Hardy, Taylor Mays, Aaron Curry, and Malcolm Jenkins. I'll pass on Cushings, I'd much rather have Curry.

The kid from san jose's name is Jarron Gilbert and he looks like a beast. Just type in his name on Youtube. Looks like an athlete. In one of the videos he jumped out of a swimming pool!!! Dont expect him to be under the radar too long. Plus he's 3rd in the nation in TFL's

Understand....I'm buying Orakpo because of what he might become. Right now he is a liability at stopping the run. Or I believe he will be for a few years at the next level. He is a beast in the weight room. He likes it. He plays hard until his guts are hanging out.....but he is still going to be a liability for a while at defending the running game. 6' 4" is a liability at DE. And it might be my old Columbia Blue coming out and my heart is ruling my head. When I see him, I see Squaty, Elvin Bethea. I really like the San Jose guy....If Gamble comes out....we ended up with Curry or Gamble and came back for the San Jose St. Guy in the third I'd be good with that. San Jose St. Guy is a nutural manster. 6'6", 280 and he runs like a LB. Good first step...and in the trenches...he likes it. He likes it a whole lot.

I don't know if you could have a 6' 5" Will, but the Kansas guy is a rare prospect. He's had a high level of production his whole career.

Matthew Stafford is overrated. Period.

Rocket launcher arm. That's about it at this point.

Stay one more year kid...

And with that, you can almost garuntee that if the knee injury to Orakpo is serious, he's going to drop like a rock.

Agreed 100%. When he went down on Saturday, I couldn't help but know that his future finances are taking a serious blow.

On a side note, I'd like Michael Johnson but right now, I'm ready for another olineman. After eight games this season, our interior could use some major upgrades. So that leaves us with two options..

1) Draft the only OG worthy of a first round pick in Duke Robinson for OU.

2) Draft another highly touted OT. Consider moving Brown inside.

I wouldn't be against the latter.

I'm not sold on Michael Johnson though this mock http://www.draftking.com/nfl/2009/mockdraft.shtml has him going earlier to the Bengals.

I like this pick more-

9. Houston Texans - Eugene Monroe, OT, Virgina
There are some people who consider Eugene Monroe to be not only the best offensive tackle prospect in the 2009 Draft, but the best prospect overall. That might be a stretch, but Monroe is a bona fide top ten talent who will help whatever team lands him.

Monroe is a talented blocker who would be a strong addition by the Texans. Houston has given up 10 sacks in five games this year, and while OT Eric Winston was signed to a long-term extension earlier this year, the team clearly needs more help on its offensive line.

And with that, you can almost garuntee that if the knee injury to Orakpo is serious, he's going to drop like a rock.

Orakpo has a sprained knee.

He could play against Baylor, but they might sit him out as a precaution.

They should, it UT can't beat baylor without Orakpo...

All I can say is that Baylor's freshamn QB is scary good.

He was the last starting QB in the country to throw an INT (took like 209 attempts).

After that........exactly.

Senior LT Eugene Monroe more than held his own against Georgia Tech DE Michael Johnson. Monroe gave up one sack to Johnson that resulted in a Marc Verica fumble, but Johnson was neutralized the rest of the game.

Can someone remind me of a site that gives good information on draft prospects and then gives a potential comparison to whom they might project in the NFL?

I doubt a sprained knee drops him that far.

He missed 4 games last year due to a right knee injury. I imagine he will miss at least one here. A first round pick is one where high contracts are awarded prior to on field production. If scouts think there is a reason to be concerned he can drop into the beginning of the second round. It is certainly not unprecdented for a guy that some people thought was a sure first rounder drops like a stone. Look at Calais Campbell or Phillip Merling last year. Some people had them tabbed as mid to late firsts. Merling went early second(some projected him as a mid round 1st) and Campbell went mid second (some projected him late first)

Last year's injury was a fluke. He took an illegal chop block directly in the knee.

Campbell dropped because of his production. He had only 6.5 sacks (only 3 of which came against quality competition).

Even the pundits miss them sometimes.

Man I hope we pick lower than 7th, come on winning streak! If we have a high pick withj our need at mulitple postions I hope someone would over us a good value and we could trade down in the first and get another pick in 3rd or so.

NFL Draft Countdown's Mock Draft (4-15-09):

15 HOUSTON TEXANS: CLAY MATTHEWS, OLB, USC
After addressing their #1 need by signing free agent defensive end Antonio Smith the Texans are now free to look in another direction with this pick. New defensive coordinator Frank Bush both played linebacker and coached the position in the NFL so the team might want to provide him with a protégé’ to groom. Sure Zach Diles was playing pretty well last year before getting injured but it’s not like he’s a Pro Bowler and on the other side there is no guarantee that Xavier Adibi or Cato June will be able to replace cap casualty Morlon Greenwood. A self-made player who went from a walk-on / special teamer at Southern Cal to a sure-fire first round pick, Clay Matthews is an intense, hard working, gritty 'backer who could even play some defensive end in passing situations. Oh, his uncle Bruce Matthews just happens to be a coach on the Texans staff too! Another Trojan, Brian Cushing, is also a possibility and don't rule out a defensive back either, especially if Malcolm Jenkins was still available

46 HOUSTON TEXANS: WILLIAM MOORE, S, MISSOURI
Stock has fallen but might be the stud safety that this franchise has been looking for.

77 HOUSTON TEXANS: ANDRE BROWN, RB, NORTH CAROLINA ST.
Big (6-0, 224), strong runner to serve as the "Thunder" to Steve Slaton's "Lightning".
I've seen these players associated with the Texans so often on mock drafts, I'll just assume these will be the selections. No reason for me to watch the draft. I'll just go play golf then catch a movie on draft day.

I think I could be happy if the draft actually broke this way. Would like it better if we found a way to get an extra 3rd again.

Brown's foot problems have me concerned. Big guy with speed and good hands that has done well but 2 surgeries on left would need eval showing no lingering issues. Check this link on his annual production. Seems a little light for an NFL back especially 2nd round.
http://espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=159652Which has him in 2nd round not 3rd.
I'm leaning more towards Jennings RB in 3rd but if Texans are okay with Brown and his previous injury, he could have tremendous ability.

Also, I'd rather have Sean Smith in 2nd over Moore. Smith 6-4" 214lbs 4.5 and long arms 34 5/8. Tremendous player who has not touched his ceiling yet. If selected he'd probably back up CB, but could start at FS quickly allowing Wilson to move to nickle CB.

Andre Brown was moved to FB before his junior year because of his size. They wanted to use him as a blocker, short yardage back, and receiver out of the backfield.

During his senior year, he was moved back to HB due to injuries to other players.

The injury issue is legit. We definitely need to check that out if we are looking at him. But if that checks out then he would be a great pick in the third or fourth.

I also prefer Jennings though.

Andre Brown Climbing Into Second Round
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 16, 2009, 12:17 p.m.
North Carolina State running back Andre Brown is approaching second-round status after initially being projected as a third-round draft pick, according to a league source.

Brown has visited the Arizona Cardinals, San Diego Chargers, Houston Texans and the Jacksonville Jaguars. A Baltimore native, Brown attended the Ravens’ local prospect day.

The 6′0, 224-pounder has also conducted private workouts with the Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Brown ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine to rank as the fourth-fastest running back overall, registering a 37-inch vertical leap and bench pressed 225 pounds 24 times.

Brown rushed for 2,403 career yards and 21 touchdowns, averaging 4.8 yards per carry.
