Since the draft, Williams has literally been flying high, soaring hither and yon in airplanes. He is Houston's hot publicity project, a media darling and closely scrutinized. On the field, the Texans liked what they saw in mini-camp, a long-armed, fast, aggressive defensive end who already has drawn comparisons to Carolina Panthers star Julius Peppers.
But it was here in his hometown, nestled among sprawling farm fields, that it all began -- the NFL dream, the drive, the guidance from a devout mother and support of a community.
As a child, Williams lugged bricks to help his hard-working father. Later he made sandwiches at a Subway restaurant managed by his mother and flourished athletically under former Richlands football coach Kevin Wilson.
"He had talent, mental aptitude, character -- and the measure of a man -- integrity and compassion,'' Wilson said.
"I was surrounded by the right people and people who raised me," Williams said.
At the podium, Williams teared up twice -- once when his mother read a poem she dedicated to him. The other pause came when he spoke about his sister, Missy, mother of two young children and a widow whose husband was killed in Iraq.
When Williams got the news of his brother-in-law's death his freshman year at State, he told Missy he'd give up his football dream and work at McDonald's to support her and the children.
Missy and Mary Williams convinced him to stay in school. Now he can provide big-time support.
Mario bought his mother a home in Raleigh and one in Houston, where she will move. He'll also help Missy and her boys, who are planning to relocate in Texas as well.
As for himself, Williams bought a Hummer and a big truck, which he drove to the school Saturday.
Big man. Big truck. Big weekend.
On Friday, Williams was honored at an appreciation dinner, this after visiting 30 wounded Marines at Camp Lejeune, all of whom he invited to a Houston game.

Williams starred at Richlands High, developing into an All-Area and All-State player with a versatile athleticism that saw him play defensive end, linebacker, running back and tight end. After graduating a semester early he headed to Raleigh to play for Amato and the Wolfpack, where he rewrote the record books in just three seasons.
After his 2005 junior campaign, he decided the time was right to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL. As the April 29 draft approached, it was evident he would be a top-five selection in the annual draft of college talent. Houston, owner of the top pick, eventually chose Williams over Southern California running back Reggie Bush and signed him to a 6-year, $54 million contract.
