With the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Houston Texans Select..

Yesterday

Waterboy
Had we lost to the Jaguars, we would have had the 6th pick. But hope winning that meaningless game and increasing our chance at keeping Koobs was worth it for you "true fans".

Anyway, I personally am hoping and praying that either Prince or Peterson fall to us. However, wouldn't surprise me if the tandem that is Rick Smith and Koobs would pass on them for another failure of a defensive lineman!

If we can't get either of those guys, and if Cream Puff Phillips does come in as DC, I wouldn't mind selecting a 3-4 pass rushing OLB, allowing Cush and DeMeco to stay in coverage more (which they are better at, anyway). Maybe a Von Miller, I know the aggie fans wouldnt mind that one.

I would really like Von Miller as I think he'll be productive from day one. I do not want a CB in the first at all as the DBs are already too young. The other reasonable option besides rush LB is NT so I would not be surprised if we grabbed Stephen Paea.

I'm not a draft guru, so I don't know players specifically. But I do know that if one of the two big WR's falls to us I'm hoping we pick him up.

Essentially I'm looking for us to use 2-3 picks on offense (WR and OL, maybe a 3rd on another OL) and 4-5 picks on defense. The rounds in which they are picked do not matter to me so long as they are BPA.

This, however, is conditional on us being aggressive in FA. If we don't do that then this "only defense" problem McNair may use to keep Kubiak will not be fixed.

Texans would be stupid to pass on Peterson/Prince if they fell to us.

Paea needs to fatten up a bit but his strength is unbelievable. Don't think we will reach for him in the 1st round, he may be available in the 2nd though.

It's very clear that our top pick probably will be either a defensive back or a DLineman, but that's conditional upon whether or not we continue with the 4-3 alignment or move to a 3-4 in the event that a 3-4 defensive coach like
Wade Phillips takes over the D. And if that happens look for the Texans to trade Mario to add picks to what they already have to draft a NT, 3-4 edge rusher (OLB), and one or more DBacks to staff their new 3-4.

Another 1st round bust if they don't bring in someone that knows how to draft players.

Why trade Mario if you go to a 3-4? He perfectly fits size/strength for a 3-4 end.

Prince Amukara looks severely overrated to me. No way he's remotely close to Top 10. Patrick Peterson and AJ Green unfortunately will be far out of reach for us.

My early favorites at this point (in no particular order):

- WR Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma St.
- OLB Von Miller, Texas A&M
- DT/NT Stephen Paea, Oregon St.
- DT/NT Nick Fairley, Auburn

Right now, I don't like any of the secondary prospects at #11 outside of Peterson. Prince does nothing for me to warrant this early, Jenkins/Harris don't excite me either. Gotta fill secondary with veteran FAs. CB Champ Bailey would be a HUGE addition. Need a FS to battle starting role with Troy Nolan. Veteran would be good as well as a S with ballskills from the draft for FS/SS.

I think with the 11th overall pick, we're looking at a Front 7 guy on defense or Blackmon (I like him better than Julio Jones).

Disagree. You may think he's overrated b/c he doesn't make many big plays, INTs, etc. But that is because no one EVER passes to his guy. He shuts him down. He pretty much takes a very good WR out of the game.

Agreed. Other CB's who might be available are Jonathan Joseph and Terrance Newman.

You pretty much have to pick up one of these guys to be your number one.

Didn't Blackmon beat him up pretty badly? And I don't recall him looking special against Wash. in the bowl game.

I will base my offseason off us being a 3-4 team, because it seems quite clear we will move to such a scheme with the types of candidates people are throwing around.

Free Agency
i would sign Champ Bailey and use him as a safety so that he can be on the field for leadership and quality and also still be able to teach our young corners and play at CB. Also if you believe the rumours pollard will no longer be with us next year.

I would also try to sign a WR, we all know that walter and jacoby are good but they're to inconsistent if we can get a 2nd threat alongside AJ our offence will be the best in the league. period!

If they did this in FA i would be extremely happy.

DRAFT
There are a couple of ways we can go in the draft.

firstly trade down 4-5 spots and pick up another 2nd rounder.
and with the pick around 15-16 the Houston texans pick ..... Von Miller.

By going to the 3-4 defence we get an extremely fast quick and dominate pass rusher.

Now we have 3 legitimate (legitimate i mean by starting or better nfl standard) 3-4 OLB in barwin cushing and von miller.

In the 2nd round we pick up Deunta Williams OR Rahim Moore at FS this gives us depth at Safety with bailey and he can also help them out.

With our 2nd pick in the 2nd round we select jerrell powe from ole miss, 6.2ft 320 pounds.
Now we have the best NT in the draft and we have a big man who can dominate the line alongside williams and smith or whoever the new DC goes with.

Now if pollard goes in the 3rd round we pick another safety.
if he doesnt i say we start picking the best players available at O-line, 3-4 DE/OLB and ILB and finally punter in the 7th round.

If we dont sign a WR in FA i think one of the options for us is to trade down in the draft to around 20-25 and pick up Michael Flloyd from Notre Dame.
He is probably just as good as AJ green (green will on in the top 5) but because of injury troubles will go late in the draft.

and then the rest of the draft is as stated above.

DE/OLB in this draft is very deep and many can be found later. thats why i think picking flloyd in the 1st is not totally a bad idea even though we have massive problems on D.

The other reasonable option besides rush LB is NT so I would not be surprised if we grabbed Stephen Paea.

if we move to a 3-4 defence im not sure if paea could play the NT but regardless he is an incredible beast and whoever gets him will be sooooo happy

Yeah! I can see us taking NT, OLB when we change our D to 3-4. For S position, I hope we go after in early rounds maybe 2nd rd.? (That UCLA kid)

Go Texans!!!

With Blackmon returning to school, I think Julio Jones merits consideration at #11 now. Only offensive guy on my radar.

Outside of him, my guess is similar to everyone else's: FRONT 7 player. I'll rephrase my earlier comments on what we need. I've been using the term playmaker a lot, regardless of position. I'll change that to IMPACT PLAYER. That player may end up being a guy like Marcel Darius or JJ Watt, who may not necessarily be an exciting elite playmaker... but if that guy (say on DL) can be the impact player we need he will win his battles doing the dirty work that goes unnoticed and open things up for our LBs. That's something I'd like to see.

I'm starting to really get on board with the Justin Houston OLB UGA selection many of you guys are 'mocking' (in a good way;)). Seems to be a player that's always around the ball creating players: hurries, sacks, fumbles, fumble recoveries, etc.

Some other names I'm really looking into, possibly for 2nd and 3rd round selections are:
Jeremy Beal - ILB/OLB - Oklahoma
Casey Matthews - ILB - Oregon
Dontay Moch - OLB - Nevada

I continue to believe it is IMPERITIVE we sign a legitimate veteran CB in free agency. Nnamdi Asomugha is of course my favorite but also look to Champ Bailey or Ike Taylor. A decent starting caliber veteran S would be a huge addition as well.... but CB is a must for me.

PFT had an article stating that Von Miller is projected to be a top 10 pick. Is it really feasable that he would fall to us, or is his stock just rising that much?

Dont be surprised if you start hearing talk about Phil Taylor of Baylor moving up to the top 15.

With him losing weight, I would not be surprised. If he shows up to the combine @ 330-335 and still has his strength, he is going to be shooting up the boards.

I don't like NT or DT in the first round. I've compiled some info a while back showing how DTs in the 1st round or top 15 picks faired as pros. It's not good.

Just dreaming aloud here, so I figure this is as good of a place to put it as any.

Maybe this is unrealistic if I am overvaluing Mario and/or undervaluing Dumervil, but imagine a scenario where we trade 1.11 and Mario Williams to Denver for 1.02 and Elvis Dumervil. Let's also assume we sign one of Champ Bailey, Jonathan Joseph, or Ike Taylor.

At that point, we draft either Patrick Peterson or Nick Fairley.

SS: Troy Nolan
FS: Patrick Peterson
CB1: Bailey/Joseph/Taylor
CB2: Glover Quin
CB3: Kareem Jackson
OLB: Connor Barwin, Elvis Dumervil
ILB: DeMeco Ryans, Brian Cushing
DE: Anotnio Smith, 2nd RD (i.e. Muhammed Wilkerson, DE/DT, Temple)
NT: 3rd RD (i.e. Sione Fua, NT, Stanford)

-or-

SS: Troy Nolan
FS: Glover Quin
CB1: Bailey/Joseph/Taylor
CB2: Kareem Jackson
CB3: Sherrick McManis (or re-sign Jason Allen)
OLB: Connor Barwin, Elvis Dumervil
ILB: DeMeco Ryans, Brian Cushing
DE: Anotnio Smith, 2nd RD (i.e. Muhammed Wilkerson, DE/DT, Temple)
NT: Nick Fairley

Pretty realistic and plausible assuming the Denver trade could happen.

In theory, I'm 100% with you. But in reality, when has Houston made a real blockbuster deal for anyone outside of Schaub (and he wasn't a huge name at the time)? You'd think, being located in Texas, the Texans would have a more deliberate trigger finger than they have.

I shall start this slow. The draft talent is very thin. There are no first round grade free or strong safties, No interior offensive linemen besides Pouncy. 1 Tight End, 1 RB, 1 MLB, 2 WR, 3 first round grade Corners. Im not sold on the OT either. The good news...We need none of those spots, the bad The are 8 ligit, first round hand in the dirt 5 tech DE. All of them look like Mario. Where all this helps us is at NT... yeap.. very rare to find one that can play the zero. There are 3 worth a top 10 pick, and with the movement I think will be at the top of the draft. One could push to us. What do you think an Elephant holding up the middle would do for Barwin or Cushing? Ask Clat Mathews what he thinks about BJ Raji? One vote away from Def player. Now Nick Failey, Marcell Dareus go 1. and 3. to Carolina and Buffalo. that only leave Stephen Paea from Oregon St. left for us." Were talking a Hiloti Nata kind of kid. I think we could us a Palonesian flavor in Houston, He would be a fan favorite from day one! Im not that worried about the knee from the Senior Bowl, I'll anyone wants him to do is bench press anyway. He's 6'1 310lbs, but he don't skip meals.A Concense 1st Team All-Ammerican, and 2010 Pac-10 Defensive player of the Year. I also took at look at what Wade might bring in. I think he converts Mario to a stand up pass rusher. Wade has worked with some of the best pass rusher the NFL has ever had. Ricky Jackson in New Orleans, Reggie White when he was in Philly, Karl Mecklenburgh in Denver, Bruce Smith in Buffalo, Shaun Merriman in San Diego, DeMarcus Ware in Dallas.... Now Mario Williams in Houston. We as a team have never had more then 30 sacks in a season, Dallas had over 50 the last 2 seasons, untill Jerry fired him and Dallas ended with 35... Wade has worked with 3 HOF pass rushers, every where he's been the Defense doubles their sack totals as well as Fumbles and Int... Im not pulling your leg..look it up. Wade can fix this we have pass rushers in the building so lets give them a chance to see what they can do. And in the meantime we bring in some South Pacific culture.

Just a friendly FYI, Stephen Paea weighed in at 6'01" and 295 lbs. at the Senior Bowl, not 310 lbs. I like the guy as well but that's kinda light weight for a 3-4 NT and he might be better served as a 4-3 NT.

02/22/2011 - Stephen Paea originally hoped to use the NFL Scouting Combine as a launching pad into the draft day elite. NFL personnel wanted to see what the former Oregon State defensive tackle would do on the bench press, since he's known for his strength. He wanted to show that for a 311-pound big man he is agile. Instead, Paea will be limited in the workout portion of the combine due to a recent knee injury. He tore his meniscus early in the first workout at the Senior Bowl last month. "I was worried about it when it happened, but the MRI showed me it wasn't serious," Paea said. "I was blessed." The surgery to clean out the loose cartilage was done by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Alabama on Jan. 27. Top athletes in various sports use him. Paea started jogging and mixed in some squats last week. He won't run during the combine, which begins Thursday and runs through March 1 in Indianapolis. He will lift, interview with the scouts, meet with the medical personnel and take the IQ test. "The most important thing is the interviews with the teams," Paea said. "They'll get to check out my knee. I feel comfortable talking with them and showing the MRIs. It's just a matter of time getting back to full strength. It won't be long." - Cliff Kirkpatrick, Corvallis Gazette Times

:yikes:

Seriously, paragraphs.

I don't think Paea is a good choice at 11 as he's recovering from a torn meniscus in his knee. Gotta have him? If he's there later in the round or you think he will be trade back and pick up some extra picks, or pick a different player and trade back up to get him.

I think they very well might go with Jones though if he's there at 11. Kid looks unreal.
