Wisconsin Is the NFL Draft’s ‘O-Line U.’ Again

The two players featured on Wisconsin’s gameday flip card for last week’s homecoming game weren’t playmakers. They didn’t go with an offensive star, like thousand-yard rusher Jonathan Taylor or quarterback Alex Hornibrook. Nor did they choose highly touted senior linebacker T.J. Edwards. Nope, the coverboys were Michael Deiter and Beau Benzschawel, both 300-pound offensive linemen. Only at Wisconsin.

Back in 2011, Russell Wilson’s lone season in Madison, the Badgers featured four future NFL starters on their O-line—Travis Frederick, Ricky Wagner, Kevin Zeitler and Peter Konz—plus current Rams right tackle Rob Havenstein was a backup on that team. This year’s version might rival that group. Wisconsin has the best O-line in college football, and all five starters have NFL potential. Right to left they are David Edwards, Beau Benzschawel, Tyler Biadasz, Michael Deiter and Jon Dietzen. They won’t all leave Madison for the 2019 draft, but it’s very likely they will all be drafted over the next three years.https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/10/24/w...-benzschawel-tyler-biadasz-michael-deiter-jon

Who if anybody do we like here this year from the Wisconsin Oline for a future Texan ?

David Edwards has been on my list.

I think the real question is, is this Wisconsin Oline better than the Texans?

Oh man, could we give it a try for a game? I don't think they could do any worse.

Maybe O"Brien should scout the Wisconsin Badgers OL Coach, he's obviously a hell of a teacher at the position.

David Edwards RT, and Beau Benzschauwel RG, could stay together and presumably make a great right side. I feel the same about Alabama's Jonah Williams LT and Ross Piercsbacher LG .... but as we know, Williams is going in the top 10. An absence of Williams might bring Mitch Hyatt of Clemson into consideration. All that being said, I would bet my house that most or all of this will not happen.

Wisconsin's OL is supposed to be one of the best in college history. They just got whipped by Minnesota, 37-15 to finish the season at 7-5. Elite OL talent is not nearly as important to winning as most people on this board think.

That would perfectly describe me. Once, about 35 years ago, I was listening to John Breen and Jerry Trupiano interviewing General Manager - Mike Holovak. He explained the importance of rebuilding the Oilers beginning with Munchak, Mathews, Salem, and Steinkuhler .... and I understood !

I'm still on the LT, Mitch Hyatt bandwagon. Just another solid showing. No sacks allowed and the OL only gave up 1 TFL. This guy has been doing this for 4 years as a starting LT for Clemson. They could very well get another CFB Championship.

He's been the blindside protector for 3 QB's and will have played in 4 CFB Playoffs, 3 CFB Championship Games, and has 1 Championship and potentially another this season. That's a hell of a track record considering the talent this guy has faced year in and year out. I also like that he protected Watson for 2 seasons as well.

It takes a lot more than just the OL

Yet teams like the Steelers, Rams, Chiefs Saints,EaglesEagl... always seem to be in the running for championships.

Other than Luck coming back why do you think the Colts have improved so much this year?

Yeah getting Cajuste (depending on leg injury) first round and Hyatt in round two would help a lot. I'm still mocking Scharping also. We could get a starting corner with our other pick in round two. This could work into better draft than I expected.

It's funny how Mitch Hyatt isn't getting much respect as a 4 year starting LT for one of the best teams in CFB. If analysts want to dump on this guy and his stock continues to fall.....I'd be ducking excited if he were still on the board late in RD3. The way some are talking, if the Texans could make a trade and somehow get a RD4 pick, he could be there for the taking.

He's somehow enjoyed nothing but success blocking on the blind-side for 4 years. He may not be the flashiest of LT's but he's getting the job done and doing it against the top talent in CFB. Texans could always ask Watson his opinion of Hyatt, being that he was the LT on their Championship team......and could be Lawrence's LT on this years Championship team.

Good to see you back man.

I love talking the draft and football in general with you.

I lurk, but I don't do nearly as heavy as scouting as I did back in the day. I'm also not a huge fan of the message board format we use now, but I still try to drop by and contribute every now and then. It's pretty awesome to see so many old familiar faces (names) contributing still though.

Doubt very much Hyatt gets out of the second round. Two offensive lineman, one being Hyatt in that second round makes lot of sense. Take BPA in first :fostering:
I dunno is Hyatt a better prospect than Rankin was coming out of college ?

Hyatt has clean injury slate with lots of high quality reps against top competition, ACC & SEC plus Alabama again for National Championship.

My inclination would be if drafted by Texans would become starting LT in short order, has familiarity with Watson already so don’t think 2nd rd selection out of question.

Like Rankin, especially his versatility, would compliment Hyatt more than compete directly for LT duties, maybe natural fit LG?

I like Hyatt but I think it will be asking too much of him to be a starting LT in the NFL as a rookie. From what I can tell he needs to improve his base strength.

That is general consensus. Yet you still have to draft better O-Line and expect to develop them into your system in the NFL. I think all positions have steep learning curves, but I do like his footwork and natural athletic ability. But your right about hand placement and punch, some technique some strength he’ll be ok. Otherwise he’d be in first round.

Maybe O'Brien should scout the Wisconsin Badgers OL Coach, he's obviously a hell of a teacher at the position.

I took the initiative and researched the University of Wisconsin OL Coach and found the following information:

Name: Joe Rudolph

Age: 46

Born: Pennsylvania

Alma Mater: University of Wisconsin / OL / Team Captain

NFL: 1995-1997 / OG / Eagles and 49's

Coaching:
Graduate Assistant Ohio State
TE & ST Coach University of Pittsburgh
TE Coach Wisconsin
Associate HC/OC University of Pittsburgh
Interim HC/OC University of Pittsburgh
Associate HC / OC / OL University of Wisconsin
Just interviewed for Temple HC position

You know, this guy has a hell of a track record and it far exceeds the one Devlin had when OB hired him. It would only be a hope and prayer that a young coach like this even hit OB's radar as a possible replacement for the incompetent Devlin. Wisconsin has had solid OL and TE production, not to mention the success of putting well taught players into the NFL. Any chance this would have something to do with Joe Rudolph? This guy is well versed in 3 areas of need....OL, TE and OC. I don't know how a coach like this goes under the radar for so long. I think he could be a hell of a pick-up for the Texans.

Hey O'Brien!!!!!........You may need to take a look at this guy over your current guy!!!!

Where's the tie to OB? Do you really expect him to hire a guy he has NO ties with?
