Win now or later?

titan hater

Waterboy
If we draft VY we will be a couple of years away...VY would sit next year...Most GMs are using the McNair/Palmer model for thier QB evaluations, hence, VY will hold a clip board most of next year.

If we draft Bush he would be able to play from the get go.

Personally, I think Reggie is the best option. Either that or trade the pick for a ton of other talent...

Anyone who thinks this franchise will "win" next year is fooling themselves. We are a couple of years away. We don't have a solid unit on either side of the ball. We had the worst units in football on both offense and defense. Too many holes to fix in one year plus the players have to learn a new scheme from a new coaching staff. We are building this thing for 2007 and beyond no matter what anyone wants to think.

We could draft Young and still be playoff contenders next year. The QB isn't issue here. The new coaching staff :yahoo: along with FA's we pick up and the later drafts for O'line and Defense will make this team happen next year.

The first round draft will not be "the impact" for this team. sorry to bust all bubbles.

I am not so sure of that...Maybe I am thinking of Earl's impact on the Oilers...

Agreed.

If we get to .500 next year it will be a miracle given the changes and the schedule alone, much less the fact that we have no depth and little experience.

As much as CC Brown played hard for us last year, if you are starting a 6th round pick in your secondary, you have no depth.

VY buys us some good will for another tough season with the fans.

Agree with Vinny 100%. We need O-line, LB, DB, TE, and depth at every position. Personally, I would like to see a new QB and RB. If we go 8-8 next year it will be a very, very good season.

I think we could go .500 next year. I think our coaching staff was THAT bad. We lost a lot of close games and we spent most of the year playing, "Throw the ball before the receivers can take 4 steps downfield." They also kept Bradford on the field all season AGAIN.

I think this is a trick question. I don't think you can say that VY will need 3-4 years. You never can tell. Palmer sat a year and was ready. Maybe VY wins games you couldn't win before by yourself. I've said it before but not everyone needs 4 years and a bucket of excuses to get good. With that being said I think the "safe" route would be Bush, then O-line and TE with the other 3 of the top 66. Then you still have 3 more to do what you will. You plug some holes with what FAs you can get and see if the new coach can implement his system. If Carr still is bad, then the experiment is over.(This is where it gets dicey though because you just passed up on a winner)But that would be the safe way.

If the Texans pass up VY they are just nuts. :brickwall

There are entirely too many excuses for David Carr. Let someone else take another 4 years to groom him. Let's get some new blood , we just signed DD to contract extension. AJ and JG are great receivers who VY could get the ball to in long situations.

This is just a no brainer and the Texans front office are the reason why we are the worst team in the NFL...Get some balls and make changes!

I am not sure it is a no brainer.

It is a gamble on the fabulous upside of Mr. Young. (NFL body, mad moves, success, leader, stats worthy of a #1 QB pick based on historical info but a game that defies many historical comparisons)

And a gamble on the fabulous upside of Mr. Bush. (mad moves, speed, success, stats worthy of a #1 RB pick based on historical info but a game that defies many historical comparisons)

Both have potential and both have risk. The choice is exacerbated by who has the number 2 pick (New Orleans in our back yard), and the 3rd pick (TN, the dreaded flying meatballs in our own division).

And there is the trade down stuff that maybe could get us very much needed depth on a team that doesn't have much. With two fabu choices in the 1-2 spots, it is quite possible that a team would give us the sun, moon and stars for that pick. Marketing + Potential = A very valuable player. The 1-2 spots this year are probably the best marketing picks the NFL has had in YEARS, and at the risk of hyperbole, maybe ever, now that we are in the age of 24 cable and radio sports channels.

I think Bush and Young would be great additions to any team, but for me personally, I would rather spend a #1 pick this year on Young because his upside to me seems higher, and because I really think the local thing is a plus factor (or could be a neg factor if TN or NO gets him). There really is something special about someone that wants to play for your specific team.

So there you go.

You don't win now with Bush either and I'd like to know why people think you do. This team is not going to the playoffs next year and probably not the year after that. THIS was supposed to be the playoff year, remember?

Vince Young will be a Texan. Once they work out, it will be obvious who they should take. Reggie Bush comes along every other year. Vince Young comes along once in a lifetime. And we get to pick him.

We will or this franchise is doomed to failure in Houston.

I think this is a no brainer because of the need of the Texans.

They NEED an O-line. So in the meantime you need a mobile quarterback-
A la like Mr Vick, that can scramble and make things happen. I can live with not going to the playoffs for a year or two with a new, YOUNG, QB. But not with a potential 6- year QB, that we can see is a bust in year 4, gimme a break.

They NEED an O-line- no brainer
D Carr has not shown anything in 4 years that impressive to pick up an $8 MM option-no brainer
Young will get fans in the seats and generate mucho $$$ for Houston. - no brainer
There will be a renewed spirit among the fans and much to look forward to in the future- no brainer

Draft Young, - Vince Young!
:redtowel:

I believe they do have a shot at being a winning team next year. I'm not going to guarantee that they are going to be a playoff team, but I believe that the coaching is so bad and that the players underachieved so much that they are much better than their record. If Bradford could catch a ball that hit him in the hands at the end of the Jags game we would be 3-13. If we could protect a 10 point lead with 30 seconds left in the game, we would be 4-12. If we could not give up a 40 yard play at the end of the Ravens game, we would be 5-11. If Kris Brown could make a 30 yard field goal at the end of the Titans game, we might be 6-10. If Kris Brown could make a field goal at the end of the Niners game, we would be 7-9. We did get blown out a few times, but a lot of our losses were by less than 7 points. And this is with an offense that had one audible, that threw mostly hitch passes, and had an offensive line that gave up 68 sacks.

Word.

We'll be lucky to be a 6-10 team next year. People seem to forget that adding one player to a 2-14 team is just a step in the right direction. But a step is not the journey. We're a good 2-3 years away from our first winning season (and we shouldn't even mention the playoffs until we can at least break .500).

I understand and agree with many of your points, but this is not a no brainer. All drafts have risks and consequences. Especially in a salary cap era, you have to be pretty sure that the decision you are making is one that isn't gonna kill your team.

It's all about opportunity costs, and how you evaluate the players.

Of course, for 2007, they haven't figured out the agreement with the players yet at all, so you can't be too ruled by the cap if you think someone is the shizzle.

Reasonable people can disagree with what to do on this, but I tend to agree with AJ's take.

But it is not a no brainer. If someone offers something really really really running outta adverbs and adjectives crazy great to the Texans for the pick, we may be forced to accept it. Just saying.
