William Moore, S, Missouri

RipTraxx

Free Agent
A lot of mock drafts have us taking this kid. I never heard of him before i started looking at them. Anyone know anything or at least watch him play?

:d:

He's overrated and will be lucky to go in the first round. He managed to get a bunch of INTs his junior season, but he is bad in coverage. He profiles more as a SS, but he's not that good of a tackler. Scouts at the senior bowl are talking about how he may have to move to LB in the NFL. Think Thomas Davis, but not as good of a hitter or tackler. I wouldn't touch him. We need a safety who is good in coverage, so we may be better off going after Rashad Johnson or maybe Louis Delmas in the second round.

Senior at Missouri. Had a stellar junior year and a less than stellar senior season to say the least. Added additional weight which he'll need to shed to be effective in the pros. Stock is slipping and will need to have a good senior bowl to gain any ground he lost. Should go in the mid 20's to mid 2nd round, imo. I would be dissappointed if he were selected by us at #15.

The mocks having him go to us in the 1st are purely basing that off of the team's need for a safety. We will not reach for a guy like that, especially with us not placing that high of a emphasis for a top safety in the past. That is unless Gibbs throws a fit over him in which case Bush, Kubiak, Smith and Kollar have the trump card. There WILL be higher rated players at other positions of need in the 1st. If he's available in the 2nd, I think they'll take a good long look at him.

Exactly. His ability to cover, or lack therefore of, is being exposed at the Senior Bowl.

I want no part of him.

I've seen 3 or 4 mocks (NBC, ESPN, couple others) and none have us taking him. I'm seeing a lot of DE or CB picks slotted for us at 15.

Threetoedpete and myself have been giving y'all the wrap on Moore for weeks now.

Some internet scouts get hung up on measurables and rank this guy high. Then you see everybody listing him high in their mock drafts and such.

On draft day, this guy's phone number better not even be on our list.

I still think he goes round 1. Someone will fall in love with his size and the rest will be history.

He was rated a 1st rounder after his junior year, he fell off the planet this year and the scouts are now talking about moving him to LB, not good talk for a DB. His fall is one of the biggest question at the Senior Bowl, I do not pick him at all. He worries me to much.

So that leaves us with no 1st round Safety in this draft. Chung is now the highest rated on most list.

I hope Taylor Mays, CJ Spiller, Terrance Cody, Jermaine Gershame, Gerald McCoy, Brandon Spikes, Van Chancellor, and Greg Hardy are paying attention to what is happening to William Moore. Had he come out after his junior season, he would have been a 1st-rounder without a doubt. But no, he wanted to go back to college to prove that he's obviously not worthy of being selected that high. Now, scouts are talking about him being a LB instead of a Safety. I bet he regrets returning for a subpar season now. Gotta strike when the iron's hot young men!

NFL scouts realize Moore was playing hurt in '08, and that will be factored into their evaluations.

"You give him an 'A' for effort in playing hurt," said a veteran NFC personnel executive, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "And that's why you always go back and look at their junior and senior year, because that gives you the full body of work of what they're doing. A healthy William Moore is a hell of a football player."

...
I believe he missed at least 2 games with an ankle injury.
And he also has problems with the ribs at one point as well.
He might have suffer another injury in the bowl game if I remember correctly.

We'll see if he can come back to form.
I wouldnt mind taking him in the 2nd.

I think that Moore will fall to at least the mid 2nd round and possibly late 2nd or early 3rd. He might wind up being a diamond in the rough for some team someday but I want no part of him for the Texans. I hope Delmas or possibly Chung lasts til our 2nd round pick but I'm having doubts.

Chung or Delmas in the second and Moore in the third?:shades:

I think with Moore falling badly, Chung and Delmas could go very late 1st round or very early 2nd round if they continue to have a great Senior Bowl and have a good combine. I've seen some mocks listing Chung in the middle of the 1st round and Delmas in the late 1st as well. These guys rising up the charts just makes me realize even more that Taylor Mays made a really bad decision by listening to Pete Carroll and that Pete talked a kid into doing what was best for Pete Carroll and USC, not what was best for Taylor Mays.

I dont think that its always the coaches telling these kids things to stay in school. I kind of believe that the NFL evaluation has more to do with it then some think.

Okay, I've been thinking about this for a couple days. Can we get a good unbiased opinion on Moore? All I read on here and other sites is about how good he was in '07, how poorly he played this last season and how he didn't do well at the senior bowl.

The thing I hope we can get away from his the pure opinion piece. I think we all understand now he shouldn't be a first rounder. Maybe he looks more like a 2nd or 3rd round pick now.

So when should we be taking a look at this guy? There are plenty of other players that may be worse than Moore but will be getting more looks at from us internet draft junkies solely because Moore is getting beat to death.

How about this question, Is he better than Brandon Harrison or Domanick Barber? What do yall think about his upside in the pros, coming in and learning. Has he maxed out his potential.

I think everyone is just caught up in his poor performance recently and has written him off completely.

I think Moore is a solid late-second or early-third round prospect. I think someone will draft him before that though because of his measurables.

The problem with him is he needs to lose some weight and get some speed back so he can play FS.

He is also a one dimensional player. He can hit a little bit, but he doesn't like to. He also fails to wrap up tackles on a very consistent basis.

If you want a one-dimensional ballhawk, Moore is your guy. But he won't be hitting anybody over the middle unless they aren't looking at him and he won't be tackling NFL running backs very well.

Moore will probably be a better NFL player than Harrison or Barber because he is infinitely more athletic, but at this point, he is soft and lacks a killer instinct.

Totally agree Bah. I don't think it will either though. We have passed on some great safeties already, so I don't see us grabbing a very over rated one that has some hype because there aren't any others that look much better than him like Mays did. I'm not really worried about us taking Moore in the first round, but if we did for some reason you will see one angry crazy Texecutioner which is never a good thing. Lol!

The scoop on Moore is pretty simple. He had a stellar Junior year and an ok senior year. His measurable are great and many pundits had him as the number 2 safety in the draft. When Taylor Mays decided to go back to USC, many pundits immedialty elevated him to the top S prospect in the draft. Many expected that he would hold his own at the senior bowl and cement first round status at least.

That didn;t happen. If anything, Moore looked pretty bad. So bad that he has tumbled to the beginning-middle of the second round. He will need a good combine to stop the free fall. At this point he might be the 4th best S prospect in the draft.

I currently have him right around mid second, so about half a round ahead of you. I think he has the instincts but needs someone to coach him up and help him develop a better mind for the position. That said, he has ability but just needs some good coaching. With good coaching, conditioning, and a solid work ethic, he could see some NFL reps by mid season, if not earlier.

Nice posts guys. From everything I read on the poor guy around this site or other sites, everybody seems like they've given up on him. "Oh that guy sucks", "I wouldn't touch him with a 10 ft pole", etc. Similar views to Michael Johnson.

The point is so what if he's not a 1st round talent or pro bowl lock. Most of these prospects don't, these were just thought of really highly at one point in time. I keep seeing "well he's going to drop for a reason" but that's the same for all of these prospects.

I feel like he and Michael Johnson are getting such bad raps b/c they were once rated so high. If we see one of their selections in the mid 2nd or 3rd, I think we'll still hear a lot of griping. The fact is they could still be better prospects than everyone else on board AND they could develop into better players than we currently have. That's what you're looking for in the draft, pretty much.

He dosen't suck. He had a poor year. If you're looking for an enforcer on the line of scrimage....maybe. His junior year he was a play maker. This year...I do know if it was a girl, press clippings, the agents...or what, but he stagnated. Understand, I love Chase Daniels...so everytime they were on I watched. Poor tackles...I hate block tackles....especailly when the guy goes low and bounces off. And Moore did that a lot. Now if he was hurt...fine. If you think you can put ten pounds on him and move him to the wil backer fine...but no way I touch this guy with the fifteen. Travis Johnson chapter II.

Not if Delmas and Chung are still available.

Well do we need both a FS and a SS? (I'm guessing yes)

Delmas = FS
Moore and Chung = SS

I think Delmas will be gone before the Texans' 2nd round pick, and taking him in the 1st might be a reach. Chung and Moore might be there, and in which case I'd agree with you in taking Chung over Moore.

Yeah, I do think we need both; but no I don't think we'll draft both this year.

If in the 2nd round all of the safeties are still on the board; Delmas and Chung are my preferred 2.

I'm kinda hoping that one of teh QBs slip and somebody wants to trade back into the 1st for one; and that we can get a 2nd and 1st in 2010 (and then use one of those 2nds on Delmas).

Unless somebody slips I'm starting to get the feeling that there won't be much difference in the quailty of player selected 15th or 33rd.

Not if Delmas and Chung are still available.

Got to be teased by those two for sure.

McClain was kinda hinting that they were going for a bigger DE in his current...."we ain't taking no big splash free agents" blog....Now whether he's guessing with the rest of us or he's been told something I dunno. But unless he's talking about Tyson Jackson or someone later in the draft who would dove tail into Mario's' salary who knows. But that would rule out the tweener 3-4 guys linebackers with the fifteen...And that would in turn move the safeties/corners up. Why they would want to draft another Weaver, taller , younger, but with the same first step I dunno ? Seems like a lateral move to me. I've watched the Alabama -LSU game literally ten times....I'm still looking for the guy. If he can't beat Andre Smith, he isn't going to beat Ugoh or Stewart.

With all of these spreads in college, the NFL teams are going to eventually have to start "finding" & developing thier own true 4-3 ends.

Are you applying the same level of judgement to Brian Orakpo vs. Ohio State? Seems to me the pass rushing nightmare "Rak" didn't get the best of them until he beat RT Browning w/ 10 seconds left in the game.

Kubes stated last two pre-seasons that he was ok with the play of his safeties. I think history is important dealing with this set of management. Last season Dominique Barber a 218 lb safety was selected in 6th as part of the D. Brown trade down scenario. FS was not a high priority. Brandon Harrison selected year before remains on team but was not selected to be a starter but a project. Will Demps was a pro bowl nominee 2 years ago with broken arm and did so so last year. May not be on this next roster. Nothing indicates that team will switch thinking from "safeties 1 & 2" to "FS and SS". I do not think a FS like Moore or Delmas or my 4th round Rashad Johnson will be selected as a need player.

On McClain's article concerning bigger, stronger DE; uh, who would that be that could be there at 15? Maybe he is talking about getting a DE in later rounds. Robert Ayers 273lbs with 15.5 TFL and 3 sacks as a senior; stands out to me for day 2. Could a strong NT like Raji meet the need of freeing up Mario by collapsing the pocket? In one of my scenarios, Raji, Shonn Green RB and Robert Ayers in 3rd. That same scenario has me taking Rashad Johnson in 4th as FS. Only time will tell, especially if we take it one day at a time.

Speaking of Barber, McClain (in his current weekly chat) indicates that the team "loves" Barber.

Take it for what it's worth.

Yes, that has been said since he was drafted. I wonder how much of that is due to his blood lines? Or is that to make front office look even smarter on the trade down? I have not seen enough of him to have much of an opinion, but I have seen him tackle and he does carry a wollop.
