Will They Or Won't They

If I understand correctly, the Texans have until the end of this week to offer Carr that extension. I would say that will be the tell all to what they are planning to do with this #1 pick. Right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

They have two weeks from yesterday to sign his extension, and you are right that should be a good indication of the direction they are planning to head this offseason.

Your telling me they may not pick up the extention. They will still owe 7 million an theres no way we can get another QB with his upside at the difference of the money saved.I think they may be right to pick it up.I'm almost sure we can get something for Carr a player and maybe a pick.

If I remember correctly, Casserly said that there was already a deal in place but it would not be made public until the deadline (I'm paraphrasing so if someone has a link, please post it.)

Whether or not they sign Carr to an extension is not the only indicator of what they may do IMO. They can sign him to a 3-yr contract w/ an $8 million bonus or a 2-yr contract w/ a $5 million bonus. I tend to think that the 2-yr contract would make it easier for the Texans to trade him IF that is what they are planning.

So, I think it's not only IF they sign him to an extension, but WHICH extension that is also an indication of the direction they are planning to go.:twocents:

So NOW ...we're looking to see IF and WHICH contract extension Carr may or may not get.

Let's explore the options ....shall we ...

1) They do not re-sign him ...what happens then? Does he fulfill his current contract and then go to free agency? How many years or left? 1 or 2? Also, I would think that we would then get Vince ...right?

2) They sign him to a 2 year extension ...then maybe we're looking at a sign & trade ...or 3 year extension ...we're looking at getting Bush or D'Brick ...or some other option with the pick.

3) Any other scenarios?

In a perfect world ...we end up with 2 early picks ...and get both Vince & Bush ...like that trade rumor of Carr for Ricky Williams and a pick ...or sumthin like that ...I'd love it. Say what you want about Ricky ...the guy can play football.
I'd also like to make a push for T.O. ...I mean put all that together ...free agency is going to be very attractive ...we could be talking playoffs next season.
Don't tell me what a young QB can't do ...not after the past 2 seasons the Steelers have had ...we could be right up there.
I say Carr, Davis, the 2nd round pick, and even our beloved AJ are all trade bait.

My guess is that they're taking a their time with this because they can. I don't expect anything but the 3-year extension.

Even if they wanted to trade him (which I seriously doubt), they may still have to sign him for 3 years because they wouldn't want him to appear less valuable to other teams.

FYI, if they don't give Carr his extension he is done now and as of March 2nd this year he is a free agent and leaves the team and we get nothing in return for him.

Wouldn't it be better if we let him go so that way we dont take the cap hit?We can use that extra money on FA.

Well that depends on your opinion of Carr. If you think he is the QB for this team and should remain that way then no, you wouldn't want to release him, plus if you let him go you're going to have to bring in a replacement for him, presumably you would want to bring in Vince Young who is going to cost more than Carr will and probably won't play for a year or two anyways.

It is also whether you want to start winning this next season or go another 2 and out like we did this year. This team, plain and simple, needs the experience of Carr. With Kube working with him, we are going to see a rebirth, which will project this team into some fantastic games, ones we have been waiting since the first of last year to see. Mark my words, this is the start of something huge.:yahoo:

This is such a shady business ...but that makes perfect sense. If you're gonna trade the guy ...you wouldn't want to make it seem like he's no good. The Detroit Pistons could learn from that in there dealings with Darko ...that guy was a #2 pick overall ...and they treat him like a college walk-on.

From the minute you play your last game, it's time to put on your poker face. A smokescreen if you will. We don't know what the hell is going on. Believe nothing you hear unless it comes from Paul Tags mouth on draft day. Even if they sign Carr to the 3 year deal it means nothing.

Peep this scenario:
Trade Carr to a team for their 2nd rd'r (preferably NO, Ari, or GB). All in the NFC.
As well as swap pix with Tenn so they can reunite Leinert with Chow and we also get their 3rd and 4th from this years draft and next years 1st rd'r from them. They'll hold out on giving us their 2nd due to a deeply talented draft.
Then the Saints either take Cutler, Young, or trade down themselves to a team that wants to move up (hopefully after Bush)
Then we take Young if he's still there (and if he's gone we still get Bush as a conselation) or Cutler if the saints take young or a traded team takes young.
All the while we stockpile 3 more pix totalling a startling 6 1st day pix as well as an extra 4th this year and an extra 1st for next year.
Trade down guy is happy, VY guy is happy, or quite possibly Bush guy is happy. Kubes gets more to work with and the rest is up to the players we currently have/keep.

Oh, and note to all the people who say Young isn't even tops on anyones draft board. Neither was Alex Smith last year. Ther was major confusion over who to take with the Leaf/Manning debate. Remember Carr/Harrington, we were both wrong.

One more side bar if I may. If Caserly can get a 3rd for Drew Henson the he can damn sure get a high 2nd for Carr, hell toss in Ragone if it'd make the deal sweeter. We can take Croyle in the 3rd and actually give Young some comp to get the juices flowing. Banks would love to mentor Young as to how to handle yourself as an NFL QB.

Now explain your proposal to fitting all these first day picks in under the rookie pool .......Even if it were possible the Texans would be in cap hell 3-4 seasons down the road once these players were out of their rookie deals.

Why would Titans want to trade up? They could get Leinert or Young with #3 pick. Don't be surprised if they select D' Brickashaw.

Wow Corrosion the cap would be something special. It would not really affect the year of this draft, but next year with two first rounders. We would be in some serious cap trouble. Unless he is thinking no new CBA so we would be uncapped. right now we have four I am with the trade down to number 4 which is much more likely now that Bradway is out of the picture in NY, but that just leaves us with 5 picks and one or two of those is likely to be traded.

The rookie pool itself isn't an issue as it is based on the actual picks exercised by the team. Down the road is a legitimate concern, but IMO it isn't realistically as bad as it theoretically could be. First, the odds of all the trade down picks turning into superstars is small, but the odds of turning up solid contributors and better and thus enhancing the overall talent level of the team is significant. In addition, some of the trade down prospects would be at lower paid positions even if very successful. TE's and safeties for example don't get paid anything close to what RB's and QB's are paid. While you obviously hope every pick turns into a star, realistically down the road some guys even from the 1st day may not make the team and certainly not all will demand top dollar at their positions.

Okay, so I guess the plot is thickening. The Texans DID offer the contract extension.

No details as of yet ...that I'm aware of at least. Man I hope this works out for the best. (FYI The Best=Vince Young).

The press conference to announce it was 1.5 hours ago. Although it is still a slight possibility, after listening to them I'm pretty sure Vince isn't going to be drafted to come here.

Did they say anything about Sherman accepting the coaching offer?

Isn't there any way to restructure his contract. The guy has been here 4 years and he's getting payed like Joe Montana.. ..Talk about robbery!:pigfly:

He's getting payed like he just took us to the Superbowl and threw 4500 yards last year.

SportsCenter just reported that the Dolphins may be interested in trading Ricky Williams for a good QB. They said that at $545,000/per year Ricky was a "BARGAIN" ...also, that he still has 1500yd rushing potential.

I Agree. I'd push the button on that one. The question is ...could this potentially be a multi-player trade ...if so ...who would you like to get from Miami ...or give up in Houston.

Dolphins
RT Vernon Carey
DT Vonnie Holliday
CB Sam Madison

Madison is 31. I suppose we could use him for a few years.
Carey is a big RT. I am not sure what his feet are like and if he would fit Coack Kubiak's system.
Holliday seems a bit iffy. He is getting up there in age and didnt seem to be a particulalry dominating DT.

The thing is this though. If we trade Carr we need to get something back for him. Honestly, we cant get much for him this year. If we go ahead and draft Vince, we need to sit him for a year. Then we need to draft some line and give him a solid TE to work with. That way we can showcase Carr to the league so that next year he will bring back some value.

This rumor has been floating around for weeks. Carr isn't going to be sent to Miami for Ricky Williams, that makes absolutely no sense for the Texans to do that. With Tim Couch trying to make a comeback, Jon Kitna likely being available, Philip Rivers maybe being available, and with either Daunte Culpepper or Brad Johnson on the market the Dolphins have plenty of free agent or trade options (as well as the draft) for a QB, but Carr is not one of them. I think the Dolphins would likely go after a better veteran (Kitna or Brad Johnson if the Vikings keep Culpepper over him) to start for a couple years and then drafting someone, either a Cutler in the 1st round if he falls, maybe Croyle or Jacbos in the 2nd, or waiting til later in the draft for more of a developmental kind of guy, although they do have Brock Berlin on their roster already. Brad Johnson could definitely be an option because they are only a couple players away from serious playoff contention, and he has the ability and playoff/Super Bowl experience to get them over the hump and back in the playoffs next year.

You who knows nothing! It would make PERFECT sense. In all this talk of cap hits and what not ...getting a player of Ricky Williams abilities for that price tag is an option you HAVE to explore. Maybe, the particulars are too much ...but it would be *****ic not to explore it.

Say, what you want but deep down we all know that Vince Young, win or lose, is the best fit for these Houston Texans ...WHY??? The guy is gonna sell tickets and bring excitement back to Houston football!

Let's see, Ricky Williams has a cheap base salary for the one remaining year on his contract, but we take Carr's $8 million cap hit to bring him here. That's excellent work on the salary cap. We bring in Ricky Williams who quit on his team to go toke it up in Asia for a year when we already have Domanick Davis, Vernand Morency, and Jonathan Wells, so either he bumps one of them out prematurely and does great (which we'll then have to pay out the *** to get him to stay the following year) or he sucks it up and we traded our QB off for a bust.
You can say whatever you want, but Vince Young is not at all the best fit for the Texans and outside a dwindling homer crowd here in Houston and in Austin the majority of the rest of the NFL crowd realizes this. The sooner you get over the fact that we aren't taking Vince Young and we're not going to trade David Carr then the easier it will be on you.
