Why Why Why?!?!?!?!?!

What's the deal with the front office? ONE free agent signing so far? I know we don't have cap issues, and there are the likes of Ty Law, Gary baxter, Troy Brown, David Patten, Ray Buchanan, Samari Rolle, LaMont Jordan. These guys could all help us a great deal. Am I missing something or is the front office just "loopy"?

You're missing something. You can't just go around signing a bunch of high paid FA's. We're not in cap trouble now, but we would be within the next two years and then we'd probably end up like San Francisco.

Not to mention we have made it clear that we wouldn't be big players in Free Agency and we will continue to build our team through the draft. Hence: Carr, AJ, Robinson, Babin and hopefully DJ next *Fingers Crossed*. :thumbup

repeat along with me...... Build through the Draft.......BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT.....................BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not all but one maybe two that's all! I'm not giving up on my boys but if we don't do something in the FA market and try to go at it with unprooven rookies like Gilly says it's gonna be a long season!

unproven rookies is our forte.

we cant afford a bunch of offseason acquisitions

offseason isnt over, sharper is still up for trade, who knows what could happen there.

our FA needs are few... our draft needs are bigger.

Amen to that!!!

Ray Buchanon? No thanks on him. He's couldn't even play CB for the Raiders, and was used as a safety. Didn't he lose his spot to Stuart Schweigart the rookie out of Purdue?

Could have been Corey Dillon.

Look you can't just build through the draft, that is silly. You have to have a good mix of free agent pickups and luck in the draft. Casserly is showing his bluffs more and more by stating he won't be active too much in Free Agency, then boom he goes after Pat Williams, one of better FA's out there.

It is nice in theory but it is almost impossible in todays nfl. Free agency ruined the days of having players around for their entire careers. Nothing guarantees anyone will stay longer than their contract. The Texans haven't been around long enough to see any of our good draft picks sign elsewhere but it will happen. You have to use free agency. Every team. The problem is most teams end up over paying for players which is what we are trying not to do. We have some fat contracts on our roster and that is probably why Sharper and Foreman have been given permission to seek a trade. Walker, Glen, Wong, Wiegert, McKinney, Coleman, and Brown are some other fat contracts. There are some others but these are the ones that stick out when comparing production vs. salary.

Notice that all the "fat contracts" you listed are Free Agent contracts!! That's the point. With a salary cap, you can not build a team that way.

I could go for a little more Defensive Line help... preferribly with some 3-4 experience in case Payne or someone goes down. Just a touch of depth.

Then all we would really need to do is focus on OL, CB, and WR in the draft!

Most high dollars FA are like the one the Texans have Wade, Smith, McKinney,... ovepayments for average to good at best NFL talent. The core talent of the most successful teams is through the draft and low dollar FA. (see Eagles and Patriots)

When the more successful team goes after a high dollar, big name player it is to fill a specific role to get them further in the playoffs. In fact, the both Eagles and Patriots have probably let more players walk than they have signed.

chill man, from the looks of our team last season we dont need to us all of our car space n big FA, i dont want to be good for 2 years and then be like miami or SF. Wouldnt ya rather be good for years ? And we will be the way the Front office is building this team !

Corey Dillon was acquired via trade, not free agency.

I still dont see how NOT ONE hole from last year has been filled. yes we have got some more depth in some very needed areas but IMO we will be starting the same caliber team that we had last year. Still no legitament #2 WR, and still an Oline that looks like swiss cheese after the ball is hiked. A simple 4 man rush is what killed us last year. If we are going to fork out some cash lets at least improve the team, NOT simply maintane what we have.

I hope Sharpier stays.

We are below the cap because we have lots of free agents this year. The Cap aint so big after we signed some key free agents.

8 million aint so big anymore..

Man homeboy listen to get room we have to get rid of FOREMAN not my boy Sharper and plus look at how much we pay Carr and he throw a interception every snap

The New England Patriots have won 3 of the last 4 Superbowls. When was the last time you heard them making a "big free agent splash"? Their biggest move in the past couple of years was bringing in Corey Dillion, who was traded and 3 years ago they brought in Rodney Harrison, and other than that have made no big "Free Agency" moves. You look at their current starters and half of them have been drafted by them the past 3-4 years. Scott Pioli has figured out how to win today in the NFL. You build the team through good scouting and great draft moves. He has done that and that is why the Patriots are at the top. I guarntee that their biggest offseason move will be slapping the franchise tag on Adam Vinitaree (or somethin like that).

Dom Capers figured out in Carolina that by raiding the FA market will win games at first, and it will cost you a whole bunch later on down the road. And who said the Eagles have been making "low-key free agent moves"? Do you call brining in Jevon Kearse low key? What about Terrell Owens, I know he ain't low key.

How to win in today's NFL draft: Draft players and hope they turn out to be future stars.
