Why Texans are going to be praised for what they did to Bush

GP

Go Texans!
You heard me right.

At first I was angry that we sent him packing over a few million dollars.

Now that I look at it, though, there's going to be a big potential dose of praise for our team's ownership and front office when the dust settles and the emotions die down.

And here's why:

We ALL gripe about how up-and-coming players, especially the Reggie Bush-types of the league...the guys who get wayyyyyy too much for not playing a single down of NFL football yet...are getting in contract money.

Well, our organization just put the sportsworld on tilt and said, "This has got to stop. And it stops with us. We don't care if it is Jesus Jr. who is 8' 4" and runs a 2.5 40. We will not be held hostage by anybody, and we will even risk losing Jesus Jr. for the sake of our ethics, which says that we're interested in giving fair money to players on a true marketplace value system."

Hopefully this will create a ripple effect. We just witnessed a recent rift in the CBA, which potentially could have risked the value of the game we love and watch, but maybe this is the beginning of teams realizing that they need to put their foot down on contract hostage taking. I hope Bush is un-signable and the Saints offer him nearly what we offered him, or less.

Bush is in a tough spot now. He has always looked or tried to portray himself as "just interested in playing in the NFL...." Well, he not only DIDN'T get picked number 1...he also has to play in New Orleans where he will NOT be the "big deal" he would have been on about 30 other teams who could have drafted him. Nobody made a deal for him. Nobody. He sat there and heard his name called by a team he doesn't want to play for. Months and months of playing it cool abd just expecting that things would go his way had paved the way for his own heartbreak. And suddenly, he looked very worried and very sad on the stage holding a jersey he didn't want. It worked for Eli, but it bombed for Bush. The race card WILL be played, and it will be unfortunate.

In the end, we have an ownership dedicated to character: Character toward Capers who would have been gutted and thrown overboard on most other teams. Character toward David Carr, a guy who took a beating and kept getting up....kept encouraging his offensive line even when they couldn't stop the heat from coming on national television--Carr knew that they weren't fully responsible for the. Character toward Domanick Davis with a nice payday for exceeding expectations, for giving it all he had on every touch. Character to the fans by bringing in a guy who could mentor our Qb and offensive line. And finally, character toward Mario Williams who seems to have worked WITH our front office to become a Texans player.

Say that teams play smoke and mirrors with draft ploys all you want, it appears our team doesn't play that game. Or at least we didn't when we said we would sign Carr before we even drafted him, as well as with Willams in this year's draft. Nope. Seems we shoot pretty straight on doing what we say we will do.

And THAT might not win championships all by itself, but it makes me proud to be a fan of this team. Because I know at the end of the day I'm following a team with the best interests of EVERYBODY at heart. Al Davis and his "Just win, baby" mentality stands nowhere near the philosophy of our team. And I'm proud to be Texans fan today. I wanted Bush, but didn't get him. And it seems I ought to be thankful for that. Seeing all the flaming threads by people with 2 posts in their history, the type of posts that say they are embarassed to be from Houston...the posts that say the world is laughing at us...and the posts that say they want to sell their tickets because we passed on a certain guy....all of that needs to be firmly addressed, and quickly. I suspect it has by many fans already.

Thanks, Mr. McNair for bringing back pro football to Houston. Cheers to you.

Oh brother. That's not why Williams was taken over Bush. Quit romanticizing it like it was some kind of noble gesture.

Ironically, its the same 2 post-dumdums who spurred me to join the forum, I guess I was trying to even it out.... Yin and Yang.

Terrific post gpshafer. Kudos, that was well thought out and intelligent, something lacking in about 80% of all posts in existance.

Casserly said it was a two-man race.

Seems one man valued US more than the other man did.

How is it romanticizing?

Yeah, I'm a romantic. In love with this team and how they didn't draft the hometown hero, and how they didn't draft the guy I wanted but didn't get.

Crazy in love. That's me to a tee.

BRAVO!BRAVO!!

BTW... Morency needs to get more touches IMO. this Oline just made a big step up with winston . Our D is going to be top flight. Trust in Kubiak.

like the post, gp, but I truly believe this was about helping the defense before helping the offense. We simply need MW more from a football/wins standpoint than we needed Reggie Bush.

To hell with statements. Let's win some !@#$ing games. Putting Bush on team with the moves they made would've brought that team farther along, today, than picking up some athletic freak workout warrior.

Some of you think using the #1 on a back was a bad idea, well how about using the #1 pick on a guy who was inconsistent last season and whose stock only rose based on him doing something off the field?

It's not like they haven't made some significant moves to improve the D already this offseason.

Texans fans have every right to be bitter. They have put up with 4 seasons of incompetence and then the consolation prize for that was returned to sender. The homerific circling the wagons is great and all, but this was an incredibly stupid move, a move made by an owner who wanted to pinch a few pennies and get the player signed before the draft.

Hopefully the NFL creates some kind of workout championships so the Texans can put Williams to good use. Otherwise we can look down I-10 for the next 10 years as What Could Have Been runs and catches his way into Canton.

I don't think this will create any kind of ripple effect. It's not like we signed Mario to a $25 million contract, we signed him to a $54 million contract. We still gave him a huge contract for not playing a single down in the NFL. I'm sure next year Brady Quinn or whoever the first pick is will get a contract that is worth $60-64 million.

They haven't done much. Mainly just brought in a bunch of guys to rotate in the DL. Should help us against the run.

We never have had a bona fide pass rusher.

Now that Bush isn't our man, I'll be honest and say there are some things about him that I have doubts about. Not only questions about his ability (notice that a lot of his highlights must be against bad defenses, because that stuff won't be in the NFL), but also some character issues that have arisen in the past week.

Good, positive perspective gpshafer_1976. Super Mario is our pick, and we have to live with it (regardless of how you feel about it). Might as well look at the glass half full then.

Yeah, they didn't sign a MLB this offseason and switch to the 4-3. Taking Bush at #1 wouldn't have prevented them from taking Ryans at #33. They would've had significant improvement in that D without taking the workout warrior.

I did not think this deal was about money, I thought it was about the front office comming to a decision that Williams would simply be more beneficial for the team. I don't agree with that decision, but I can respect it. If this is about just not wanting to pay more money to Bush and taking Williams because he is cheaper, I can not respect that and I think it would make the Texans brass look like horses rears. I do think rookies ask for too much and I think there should be a limit set on what a rookie could get. I'd like for them to be forced to come in and earn their worth. But the way it is right now guys can, and do, ask for the sky and hold out until they get it. Teams just need to sign them to where they have an out if the player does not pan out.

I agree with the original post. Bush let his ego get the best of him and it cost him. It was a really good idea getting the guy signed BEFORE the pick ...The FO got that one right ...kudos there. I'd hate to see a guy miss camp over contract disputes.

For what it's worth, my two cents on this. First, gpshafer_1976, fantastic post sir. You've become one of my favorite reads here on the boards. There are many I look forward to reading, Grid, Jerek, Chuck, Kaiser just to name a few. I was in the trade down camp, didn't want either Bush or VY. When it became apparent that we weren't going to get that once in a lifetime trade for our pick, I resolved myself to the fact we'd take Bush. Even though I felt he was a "Boola Boola back" like Glanville used to call them. Way too much east and west for an NFL program. I just didn't feel he would transition well to the pros. So, deep down, I'm happy we didn't pick the guy. At the same time, I can't say I don't feel some disappointment that we didn't get that marquee type player. Not saying Williams can't be that, but I wanted an offensive weapon, something that would allow Carr many more options, and keep opposing defenses confused. It was my hope that Bush could be that weapon, so I was very surprised by the Texans decision not to get him. But truth is, he brought this on himself. And now must suffer in a New Orleans system that throughout their history has never proven successful on any level. I'm sure any team can make that turnaround, but with Benson as their owner, well, it's like they're snake bit. I feel sorry for the guy, because he'll never achieve the success he could have had in the Texans program. Greed has a way of biting ya in the butt I suppose. Anyway, looking forward to the season getting underway, and dang glad this draft crap is over with. I'm sure we'll have to deal with a few more weeks of the trolls from Cali and UT telling us what retards we have for owners, but nothing a few sacks of Manning next year won't cure :)

That's a good post too, 'cause that is exactly how I felt. I was a trade down guy, didn't think it was going to happen about a month left to go and so i started liking the idea of Bush. To be honest, my knee jerk reaction was I was let down witht the 1st pick, but after a few minutes I was really quite fine with it. In fact I am very happy about it now. Bottom line I trust in Kubiak, and they are reshaping this team from the trenches, and I LIKE IT.

Also, if it was Bush's ego, or the money Mario got was offered and not enough for Bush, then I am glad we passed on him. You do reap what you sow, and so far all these guys are unproven in the NFL, so being a little grateful for a team wanting to draft you goes a long way.

nice post. i am upset about the bush fiasco....but Kubiak in my mind had a good reason to go defense in a division with Manning. Plus obviously nobody wanted to seriously trade up for Bush (which should tell you something).

Come on now, we all know why the Texans let Bush slip to New Orleans. It was McNair's way of giving a gift to the people of New Orleans. Hopefully he can electrify that city, and help the Saints win some games, and restore respect and dignity to the city.

A small price to pay for such a stand up person. McNair the Great!!!

Restore respect and dignity to the city..... that is a good one...

I like the picture on the website of a woman running for Mayor of New Orleans... Nice picture of her smiling and "apparently" sitting in some cafe in the French Quarter in New Orleans.....BUT THEN YOU SAW THE DISNEYLAND TRASHCAN IN THE BACKGROUND OF THE PICTURE...

She was sitting in the "New Orleans" section of "Disneyland"...

Reggie Bush was set up by those sleezeball agents his parents hooked up with. They would have him shaving points with "fumbles" midway through the season..

If you notice that then you should have noticed that all of MW's highlights were against Maryland and South Florida, and of course they are NFL caliber offences!

This might seem a little nitpicky, but all of the green roomers looked excited when they were drafted EXCEPT Bush. Even Leinart put on a good smile after dropping to the 10 spot.

I was watching an interview with him on espn earlier, and he looked like someone just let the air out of his Schwinn. I know he wanted to be the top pick, but #2 isn't too shabby!

I don't think being the #2 is what has him down. I think it is the idea of playing in New Orleans that he dreads:confused:
