Why aren't we doing this?

MightyTExan

It's go time!
Inquirer staffer Bob Brookover says the Eagles are on the verge of signing free-agent center LeCharles Bentley, formerly of the Saints. They may also continue to rebuild their offensive line by going after Seattle guard Steve Hutchinson

We have the worst O-Line in the history of the NFL. Why aren't we making moves like this?

Philly has $16.7M to spend under the current cap . The Texans have $8.3M as of March 2. That could be a huge reason why the Texans havent made any aquisitions as of yet . I dont expect them to do much prior to a new CBA agreement .

Im not sure if the rookie pool falls under this number or not but if it does there isnt a whole lot of wiggle room for the team .... can someone enlighten me on this situation ?

I thought he was hot to go to Cleveland?

Cleveland doesnt offer him the chance to win immediately ... The Eagles arent far removed from 4 consecutive NFC Champoinship games . Bentley and a couple more good additions would put them over the top.

Well, Philly can go out and grab Jamie Sharper and Marcus Coleman.

After all the grief some fans threw out around here all last season for us not having the great and magnificent Jamie Sharper on our team, and now that Coleman is a goner, too, that makes two star players that will go and make immediate impacts on other teams while making Casserly look like the ***** he is for releasing those guys. (sarcasm)

If we're only $8 mil under the cap, and with the way the CBA negotiation is going, we sure as heck can't afford to spend it until the CBA is more solid. It'd be nice to be $20+ mill over like Vikes and Browns, but at least we're not like the Raiders and Titans who look to be similar to NFL Europe teams (in terms of player talent) next year if the CBA crashes. They'll have to make major cuts.

So at least we're not doomed to get any worse than we already are.

even if we were more under the cap than Philly.. convincing the top player at their position to come play for the worst team in the league..and an expansion team to boot... on an Oline which is constantly poked fun at by the media... is a little tough.

"and an expansion team to boot..."

...just curious--is there an official point in time we lose this label or do we keep it until the next expansion team?

Winning seasons and competing for the playoffs make you an "established" team... at least as far as Free Agents go.

In my opinion we lose the expansion team tag when the talent level on the team is on par with the talent level around the league on average .... That hasnt happened yet. :twocents:

Thats twice in two days Grid .... am I getting soft in my old age or did you just all the sudden get smarter ? :stirpot:

Isn't Payne the only remaining expansion draft player? The current roster is full of Casserly's finest hand-picked, vicious, highly motivated, smash-mouth, football players. A half a decade later we may be losing to the 49'ers and Browns and picking first in the draft, but we have a timeless logo and corporate sponsorship that we all think about every time we pay our way too high light bills every summer, so we have that going for us.

You are correct , Payne is the last player left from those picked in the expansion draft .......

Because offensive line is and always has been Charley Casserly's lowest priority for some reason.

That became apparent when they did Nodda and I mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to protect DC after Casserly told him point blank " Improving the Offensive Line is Priority One." One thing for certian , Casserly isnt a very good liar ...a good liar at least try's cover's his @@

He signed Victor Riley and drafted a young but undersized center last year.

IMO, this line of thinking is kind of hard to swallow. First, what determines that we are on par with the NFL talent wise? Wins, meaning winning season? What if we are still trying for that 'talent equality' in year 10 or beyond? We are still considered an expansion team?

there comes a point, like with the browns, where you have "had enough time" and you are no longer an expansion team...you just suck. We havent reached that point yet.

And I think one of us got smarter corrosion, but I dont think it was me :D

Victor Riley was signed for depth - he was supposed to be an upgrade over Marcus Spears as a back-up. The proof of this was shown when they cut him before the season was over. He was due a significant bonus if he played over 10 or 12 games or something like that. Pendry made the decision to play him as a starter (at LT no less). That one shouldn't be hung on Casserly.

We've been thru three drafts with the 4th upcoming next month . In general you get three or four quality players per draft. At that rate it would take 6 to 7 seasons to fill out your Starters (22 players) .... sprinkle in a couple of good FA aquisitions per year and that process accelerates ..... That hasnt really been the case with Casserly at the helm. The Babin deal and last years aquisition of Burnt-Toast cost them a few picks . After that point .... What Grid said below takes effect.

Gary Walker is also an expansion draft leftover.

Take this trip down memory lane for all those who forgot the likes of Matt Stevens, Jabari Issa, Charlie Rogers, and Danny Wuerffel as expansion draftees. Yikes...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/news/2002/02/18/texans_expansion_picks/

I Didnt count Walker as he has already been told that come June 1 he will be released.

How many of those cats are still in the league .... 5 ? No wonder they were left unprotected ... Im sure Carr knows how they feel.

You know what I'm surprised is that the Texans could have doubled their cap space and really competed in the free agent market and set themselves up to really improve this off-season with the cutting of 3 players. McKinney would have freed up nearly 4 mil. Weigart 3 mill. and Bruener another mill. I just don't see these guys as being worth that much money. They cut walker and nobody else to really compensate for his cap hit. I just hope they still do something smart.

Don't get me wrong I like them as well. I just don't think they are worth that much money, I think they need to re-structure and free up some cap space. Either that or get cut. I was just commenting on the fact that they could have doubled our cap space. I'm sure we could have freed up cap space with other moves, but these were the easiest I saw. I just think that with so many moves on the table that they could take it is frustrating to see their lack of movement.

We've been thru 4 drafts already, not three. And that doesn't count the Expansion Draft and the 2 players we got in two different Supp Drafts.

Now that skews your #'s a bit, but I see your point, sort of.

I would agree with that but until you have have some capable players behind these under achievers,

1. to motivate them to play better or its their ***
2. to make room for better players needed.

we do not have anyone except Hogdon that looked impressive to me on the line.. Plus O line is the most coveted of free agent. Many teams overspend and after the Todd Wade.. experience I say draft em and coach em,,

Yeah , i got my math and years screwed up at the same time .... But the numbers dont change at all .... still 22 starters and 3-4 good players per . Still gonna take 6-7 years to fill out a solid roster. (im just a year behind  )

We have one player left from the expansion draft ... Payne and there were two players picked in Sup drafts that I can think of off the top of my head ... Hollings ( busted 2nd rounder) and Milford Brown (6th rounder)
