So ... you don't see Jonathan Wells making the roster? I do.

my setiments exactly, if anything it's 'ol 2nd round tony that's in danger...and for some reason i have the feeling that kasper will sneak onto the depth chart somehow, but not take mathis or swinton's spots  i also see zeke moreno making it... :tomato:

If they keep Hollings and not Wells, I'm gonna be really ticked. I would be very tempted to use Morency as the #2 over Wells, though. I don't know.

Hollings is a bust. Wells has proven that he can rush for 100 in a game.

Is it a given that Walker is better than Travis Johnson, or are they still deciding that?

Nevermind, I guess the answer is Yes and Yes.

he might be in the future, but i think its way too early to say he's our #2 man right now. he's caught 2 passes in one game, so i don't know.

what ever happened to derrick armstrong?

oops! he's a lock before swinton and kasper, just forgot about him because he's injured and hasn't seen any pre-season action yet (at least to my knowledge).

Is it just me, or does anybody think that Mathis might be a #2 receiver?

despite the popular opinion (or so it seems to me) that mathis is the WR embodiment of god, i think he only see's action in 4 and 5 wide sets (barring injury of course). it's bradford's job to lose (this season) and if he goes down i say armstrong gets the intial nod before jerome. after this season though, i think the coaches already have mathis in mind for the texan's future :ok:

you are 100% correct IMO

I think that we should let Armstrong take Gaffney's spot as a # 2 and groom Mathis to take Bradford's spot but that is just MO. Bradford will not be here after this year IMO.

I was hoping with his hands he could make a push to become a great receiver in the league ala Drew Bennett. Both DA and Gaffney have had a few years which is the norm for a receiver to really start producing. To go an extra step and put myself out there I would be surprised if we didn't have one of the best receiving corps in the league this year if blocking is sufficient.

I wish they'd put Jabar Gaffney on IR, and figure out a way to keep Sloan Thomas. I have a feeling he'd be a good one if given enough time.

yeah after the oakland game i was thinking maybe we need to drop armstrong and keep sloan thomas, swinton, and mathis...giving us 6 wr's...probably keep two fullbacks in morris and wells...3 hb's in davis, hollings, and morency

I would be floored if Hollings aint gone. Wells can do both backup rb and fb and a special teams person. I like sloan... Armstrong has the best hands on the team, but if he has difficulty getting open, that dont help. I dont see us dropping armstrong though. Believe me, would rather have sloan

J.Wells WILL be on the team . He's the type of player Capers really likes , HARD WORKER , Great special teams player , can play multiple positions and doesnt put the ball on the ground .

Hollings should be let go , they need to cut their losses with him and use the roster spot on a player more capable of helping the team .

HJam72 said:

Reciever is probably the most competitive spot on the roster

Mathis was drafted because of his pure speed and the good ole P word .... Potential . That said , He's a VERY RAW talent who recieved Very little coaching at his position . Hampton doesnt even have a WR coach .... He will make the team but probably wont see a whole lot of action unless Bradford is hurt or is totally un-productive by mid-season .

Sloan Thomas deserves to make the team based on what he's done so far in training camp and pre-season .... Armstrong would be tough to let go and neither of them would clear waivers for the practice squad . Someone would pick them up .
Swinton isnt a lock to make the team . With Mathis and Buchannon both able to return punts / kicks he will have to show that he is valuable as a reciever to make this team , thats why they wanted to rid themselves of J.J.Moses ... one dimensional .

TE ..... Billy Miller may not make the team this year . Being one dimensional doesnt help his cause . The Texans will probably keep 3 TE's but will one of them be Miller ? The play of Matt Murphy and Marcellus Rivers could spell the end for him .

As for the Defense .... I think SESupergenius pretty much got it right , that is likely who we will see make the team .

Im wondering if the Texans will keep Bryan Pittman for nothing more than their long snapper ....Thats a luxury spot and one better used on a player who can add depth elsewhere on the team . Its time Mckinney made himself useful . :bomb:

I actually like J. Anderson more than I do Wells or Hollings, but that aint gonna happen. Well has taken too many snaps this preseason (lets see what he gets this next game) so I figure that coupled with the fact that Hollings was a high 2nd rounder we'd keep him. It's not that I dislike someone when I am excluding them, its just that we have only 53 spots, 25 more or less on offense.

Yes we will keep the longsnapper, it's an incredibley valuable position, especially when things go wrong.

This has already been dicussed in another thread, but here's a repeat of my projected 53 man roster.

I can see some notable players like Billy Miller, Bradford (Armstrong is cheaper & locked up for 2 more years), Hollings, Ramon Walker, Weary, & Orr losing their jobs this year. Hopefully, CC can trade one or two of them for draft picks or an upgrade at one of our other positions. I'd sure hate to be the coaches & have to decide which ones to cut. We're actually going to be able to cut some quality players this year.

Our secondary should be the envy of the league this year.

Anyway, here's my picks, based on just 2 preseason games.

OFFENSE

QB: Carr, Ragone, Banks
WR: AJ, Armstrong, Gaffney, Mathis, Swinton
RB: DD, Morency, Wells
FB: Norris
OL: Riley, Pitts, McKinney, Wiegert, Wade, Wand, M.Brown, Washington
TE: Bruener, Murphy

DEFENSE

DL: Walker, Payne, Smith, TJ, Deloach, Ioane
LB: Peek, Wong, Greenwood, Babin, C.Anderson, Chamberlin, Evans
CB: Dunta, Buchanon, Faggins, McKenzie
FS: Coleman, Simmons
SS: Earl, C.Brown

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK: Brown
P: Stanley
KR: Swinton, Mathis
PR: Swinton, Mathis
LS: Make yourself useful McKinney (I can't see us taking up a roster spot for just a LS. Sorry, Pittman)

TAXI SQUAD:

Pettway (LB)
Symons (QB)
S. Thomas (WR)
Wishom (CB)
Hodgdon (OL)

I think Ramon Walker makes the squad and probably Jason Bell too, though his isn't really guaranteed. Hodgdon likely makes the regular roster, same with Weary just because there isn't much guard depth on the team. Also, the practice squad was expanded to 8 so a few more guys can be added. One of the coaches said Donovan Morgan will likely be put there so there's atleast one more.

At LB I think Polk makes it just because we don't have much depth at MLB and he's a vet there.

see i'm not so sure polk makes it...he isn't healthy and frank chamberlin has been the most productive linebacker on special teams...also bradford will be on the final roster...armstrong is a question mark in my mind because he isn't healthy...often times if you can't stay on the field during training camp and preseason you get passed on...that and the production of sloan thomas is impressive

i guess its agreed then baxter is out.

wells has spent time at fb

robaire smith has spent time at fb.

even wong spent a bit of time in camp at fb.

norris will be the only true fb on the team.

I hope VMo will get #2 RB spot, and Wells #3 RB/FB...Im wondering if Wells will be in a similar role as Cooley (was), or Cushing (pit) playing TE/FB. If Murphy has a good game tmmrw I would like to see him at starting TE, from what Ive seen he looks to be country strong. :texflag:

pretty much every team in the league has a roster sport for 'just' a LS. go out into your yard and try and snap a ball through your legs through the hole in a tyre 10 feet away. it aint easy, brother. then stand up and block a 300lb lineman. that aint easy either.

I kinda had the same idea about ditching the longsnapper but then i think about the fact that Mckinney is the starter and has enough trouble just blocking someone much less long snapping ...... :brickwall

How 'bout we just start Pittman and ditch Mckinney. :)

Amazing LOL

TE Miller has better hands than any of them , Miller will be the starter again the only reason he didnt produce alot last year was because the play calls Palmer used didnt include him like the year before , i think they need to use the TE alot more than what they do.

and in my opinion , Wells will be the Back up and Morency 3rd , Hollings needs to go I thought he was gonna be good when they first aquired him bt I was wrong .

the rest of the positions i agree with most of you.

It would be nice to see Wells as the FB. He is definitely used to handling the ball. Don't forget that the FB is not in on 3 and 4 WR sets most of the time.

Murphy looked like a solid reciever in the last game. I sure hope they find a way to expand his role a little more this week.

Our OL does know how to run block. I would expect that Morency and DD will both have a good game tonight.

Well, after last night's game (Kasper will make the cut & Bradford will be cut for additional cap relief), & the fact that I was under the mistaken impression that teams can only have a 45 man roster with an 8 man Taxi Squad, it's time to revise my projected roster. Here ya' go:

nice. but i'd like to have pettway on the roster. he looked like a good s.team guy.

Bradford is a pretty safe bet to make the team IMO. The one question I have is who is our starter at SS? Haven't seen Earl play since his injury, and I don't know if they are just going to throw him in there against Buffalo.

You're probably right about Bradford, but with the talent we've seen displayed by our WR's this spring, it wouldn't come as a shock to me to see the club let him go. We don't necessarily need the cap space, but Bradford's cap hit this year is higher than any of the other WR's, with the exception of AJ. With Corey Simon being a FA now, I'd sure like to see the team make a run at him. That extra $800 K could go a long way toward helping that cause.

The way Brown has been playing, he might've had a solid chance of beating Earl out anyway, had he not been injured. As it stands, I'd put my money on Brown being the opening day starter for now.

I think Starling will make the team over Thomas. Star was a very good special teams player last year, a pretty good gunner. He's more proven I guess, but really I dont know, I just like him more than Sloan, maybe cause I've seen him more.

Unfortunately for one of the other recievers (and for us fans) ... Bradford will probably make the team . AJ, S.Thomas, Gaffney, Mathis, Swinton as well as Bradford are who I see making the final roster . Thomas has been the most reliable reciever on the team thus far . If he doesnt make the team ... someone needs their head examined .
Swinton has shown to be a valuable pick up and from another Casserly interview i heard on 610 am earlier in the week when asked about Mathis going to the practice squad ... all he did was laugh which leads one to believe that Mathis will make the team . The Texans expect him to make an impact ...Gaff hasnt been healthy enough to show much but he better do something in a hurry because if one of those other recievers gets a chance to get on the field Gaff may never get his job back .

As for G.Earl , i heard Casserly in an interview make a comment on him (I believe it was saturday just before kick off ?) ... saying that they would see how he was physically for next weeks game then make a decision as to who the starter would be for Buffalo . If he's physically able to I think you can count on him being the starter . Otherwise look for C.C.Brown to start opening day.

I took some fringe players for special teams. Walker, Bell, Starling?, Polk, Evans, Baxter?, Miller, Wells. The amstrong injury may have hurt his chances, but i'm not really sure, that's a hard position to pick. LB is another hard position to pick, I could see a guy like Orr or Chamberlin to be a sleeper pick. As for Practice Squad, I believe Thomas, Achonolu, Symmons, Lord, and Evans are eligible for PS, and i know Pettway, Hodgdon, McKenzie, Brown, and Halterman are eligible for PS. Joppru and possibly Moreno will be PUP or IR players.

i have mathis as the 3rd, maybe 4th wr. and people need to stop forgetting armstrong. i see a lot of lists without him

Yeah i'm wondering about armstrong myself. He's been injured and hasn't played in th last 2 games. I'm wonderin if that may have hurt his chances with the team. Johnson, Bradford, Gaffney, and Mathis are locks IMO. I'd throw Swinton in because of Special Teams, so that leaves 1-2 spots for WR. That leaves a battle between Armstrong, Starling, Kasper, and Thomas. Thomas is still eligible for Practice Squad, so he may be put there.
