Who are these people

I'm sorry I must not be paying enough attention but who is Casey Knutson? And who in the *** is Preston Parsons and why is he on our roster as a QB? Don't we have enough of them as it is?

Oh yeah, I mentioned last week about maybe looking at another punter besides Stanley. I took a look at our current roster and who do I find? Cody Scates from A&M!! I remember this kid being pretty solid in CS. This should be fun watching Scates and Stanley battle it out cuz I'm kinda tired of us giving the opposing team great field position because of a "lame duck" punt.

I'm not too sure about who Knutson is, and we already discussed that Stanley was playing injured last year, thus accounting for his "lame duck" punts last year after being named NFL Special Teams Player of the Week (I believe was the award) a few times the season before...Best case scenario with Scates is that he does well in the preseasin and we can get a 7th rounder for him ala Steve Cheek...

If you are new to the NFL this is the time when rosters swell to nearly 100 players. This is when we bring in guys to try out, and you are just not going to be familiar with a good deal of them...and most of them won't make the team.

Cody Scates is the man! Whenever I was at an Aggie football game and our offense was sputtering out, I always took solace in that our punter could kick the ever living, ever loving h*ll out of the ball. He's also a pretty good athlete, we had a game against Virginia Tech (you know they are monsters at blocking punts) where he had a faulty snap...so he just picked up the ball and ran it for a first down himself. Hopefully he gets a real shot, because he could be a good punter in the NFL.

Yea he was, largely due to how many punts he put past the enemies 20 yard line. He had a ton of them, but that could've been caused by us punting the ball more than just about any other team in the league.

That's actually true. In 2003 (his almost pro-bowl year) he had 97 punts. Most by anybody in the NFL. The person next to him was Shane Lechler with 96, but being in OAK, you'd expect to punt that much.

But Stanley also had 36 inside the 20. By far the most that year.

Stanley's best at keeping the ball in the air for a long time. The hangtime he puts on his punts allow our gunners to meet the punt returner almost the same time that he catches the ball. I don't think Stanley will get the boot anytime soon so long as he's healthy again. Any guy who can punt the ball effectively with the injury he had is okay by me. I expect him to look much better next year when he's healthy. Wow this is the offseason when we've got a thread concerning the punter.

Yup I love it. This is the only place where we can talk about the 2nd string punter on the Texans w/o people giving you a confused look. We're just a bunch of overly obsessed Texans fans all in one big messageboard.

Another good reason to have 17 QBs when your roster swells to 100 players is because you needs guys to run your 3rd, 4th, and 5th string practices without running Carr into da ground.

David checking out the troops. :)

hmm i always thought stanley was a good punter, did i miss something ??? so he had a down year, he had a great year in 2003 he will return for the 2005 season !

Cody Scates is in NFL Europe right now. the kid probably won't be around when the season comes. Get used to having stanley, he is better than you think.
