NFL | C. Brown works out at Pro Day
Wed, 7 Mar 2007 02:06:35 -0800

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports Cal-Poly DB Courtney Brown measured a height of 6-1 3/8 and a weight of 200 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds and 4.32 seconds. He finished the short shuttle in 4.07 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.10 seconds. He had a 41 1/2-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-11 broad jump and completed 15 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

Now, I'm no scout or anything, but the measurables on this guy are pretty nice. He's tall for a DB....fast as heck...has ups...relatively strong. I can't say I know much about the Cal-Poly football program though.

I think thats going to be the only reason he getts drafted in the late 1st round. He is although a great corner and I wouldnt mind having him it would just be a reach at 8 but if he is there in the 2round then they would have to jump on this kid.

Is he really expected to go that high?

I'd think that Hall and Revis and Hughes and Ross would all go before him just based on competition faced. I was thinking he'd maybe be a third or fourth, but after the second round, I'm useless in draft guessing.

Meausurables look good....

I've never seen him play, but hopefully this is a guy that the Texans have decided to scout...

Oh yea soe say he is the best Corner in the draft but some say he isent. I look to see him go either late 1st or early 2nd.

Very interesting...can he return kicks? I can't imagine passing on a guy who burns like that with that size. I'm getting all fired up now.

that im not sure of I know he did in college but Im not so sure how he would do in the NFL. It wouldnt hurt to throuw him in there just to see.

He was a unamious pre season 1st team all 1-aa american.

I find it odd that if he's likely to go on teh first day that he didn't get a combine invite.

not the combine but his numbers, He didnt get invited to the combine bc there was only one other DII guy there I believe but that might have been the TE that was DII. Anyways they were still talking about him during the DB day and were saying that they felt he should worked out. Was he injured or something or did he just not get invited

Not invited at all.

if they scoted him which I hope they did, I would like to see them seriously think about taking him. He would deff have to make a huge leap from d2 to the pros but with those numbers how could you not feel excited. It would be great if he fell to the 2nd day as a draft sleeper and just light it up in the pros for the Texans as a steal.

He is a day 1 guy from his measurables. Had 10 career INTs, 7 his Jr year and 1 last yr. I wonder if teams threw away from him????

The combine invites are sent out by the National Scouting Combine, which has lost some credibility over the years. It was the National Scouting Combine that had Tony Hollings rated as a top 10 player entering his senior season (he declared for the supplemental draft before that season). Some teams have left the National Scouting Combine altogether.

There are usually a couple of 1st day picks who don't get combine invites. Generally, smaller school guys like the Giants' Osi Umenyiora. It wouldn't surprise me if a small school guy like Courtney Brown shoots up into the 1st day based upon workout numbers. Cal Poly has had a defensive player taken in the 1st day in the past 2 drafts.

seeing as how mostly nobody has even heard about him, he wont go 1st round, plus he went to a small school. you'd be stupid to say he goes 1st round, especially when he wasnt even invited to the combine.

great post, thanks

whered you get his measurables? cuz on the espn draft site, it says he runs 4.62...not that theyre always correct, but theres a big diff between 4.6 and 4.35

Wow, I'll admit i'd never heard of him. The again I'd never heard of charles spencer when we drafted him...

The guy flat out has what you want for a CB a far as measurables. I'd like to no how some of his intangibles are. backpedal, hips, can he find the ball in the air?

if anybody finds some scouting reports on him please post.

thats not true, there are alot of guys not invited to the combine that produce at the nfl level

Im not arguing that. Im saying that guys in smaller schools that have potential/hype always get invited to the combine. I've never heard of this guy before. He put up very good numbers, but then again im pretty sure Justin Gatlin has excellent 40 as well...Would'nt hurt to bring him in for a workout...

Cal Poly is in the FCS and runs a REAL aggressive defense called the Desert Swarm (Arizona). From what I understand his WR would be single covered from him only. Cal Poly also produces the best LB in FCS every year.

We played Cal Poly in 05 in the playoffs and they held us to 14 points, the best defense we played all year including Texas A&M and 2 other playoff teams.

UT and Texas State are switching to this defense for next season. It relies on speed and unpredictable blitzes to create turnovers from what I understand. It should be interesting. San Jose State, U Arizona, and Cal Poly are the only teams to run the Desert Swarm, from what I know, check out their defensive stats.

You would have to be stupid to even consider drafting him at 8 with the other talent that will be on the board, like Okoye and Landry.

we will remb this just incase he turns out to be a stud. U may have been the stupid one just for saying that.

I see Wiffin and Winona St. Don't see Cal poly on the list. Stanford is coming up. I'll believe the 4.35 when I read it.

Like with this guy.: VN numbers to go with the film.

Reggie Nelson DB Nelson ran the 40 once in a time of 4.35 seconds. He had a 35-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-6 long jump, ran 4.15 in the short shuttle and 6.70 in the three-cone drill. Nelson looked very good in the drills and may well have improved his stock.

Where the heck is Wiffin located ? Sounds like a bad baseball bater.

ANALYSIS
Positives: Hard work during the 2006 offseason saw Brown increase his bulk and improve his overall muscle definition … Has a tight waist with tapered thighs and calves, long arms and adequate chest thickness … Generally lines up against the opponent's best receiver and shows good confidence in his ability as a shutdown cornerback (did not allow any receptions in three games in 2006) … Builds to top speed in a hurry and shows good open-field acceleration to close on the ball … Has above average agility, balance and body control, along with adequate hip snap to stay tight on the receiver throughout the route … Best when utilized in man or press coverage, but needs to show better aggression in run support … Product of the weight room, demonstrating better force behind his hits in 2006 than he did in the past … Self-starter who prefers his own privacy, but is well-respected by the staff and liked by his teammates … Reads the pass quickly and does a good job of recognizing the routes … Instinctive open-field tackler who has the hand strength to press and re-route the receiver … Uses his speed well to lock on and mirror the receiver in one-one-one situations … Smooth and effortless runner who reads the quarterback's release quickly and redirects to the ball in a flash … Shows good zone awareness, striking and jolting the receivers with force in press coverage … Has the catch-up speed and range to get to the ball immediately in pursuit … Adjusts to the receiver's moves well and shows the burst to close on plays in front of him … Shows natural hand extension to catch the ball outside the frame and has the speed to recover and get back in the play when he over-runs the ball … Times his jumps and will compete for the ball at its high point … Not an explosive tackler, but is effective at wrapping and has the functional strength to bring down ball carriers in one-on-one situations … Takes good angles and plays tight in man coverage, using his hands effectively to strike in the bump-and-run.

Negatives: Needs to refine his footwork in his backpedal, as he appears to round his breaks and lacks crisp plant-and-drive agility … Plays too aggressive at times and will get caught out of position when he peeks into the backfield too long … Does not always recognize when his cushion is broken, but has the burst to recover … Needs to play vs. the run with more aggression, as he seems to hesitate to stick his head in the pile and gets blocked often by the bigger linemen … Shows some hesitation in his transition, mostly when he side pedals … Needs to do a better job of breaking down plays in the open (gets out of control at times).

Compares To: Chris McAlister, Baltimore -- Brown has exceptional quickness and is a big cornerback with natural hands for the interception, but like McAlister he tends to like making open-field tackles or attacking the ball rather than play in run support. He has a developing frame with good strength, showing it well when jamming receivers, but is not an explosive tackler. He will bring good value in the nickel and dime packages, but needs to get more aggressive in run force.

another site said he ran a 3.34 and had a 41.5 inch vert jump. i would love to have a mcalister on our team esp if we get him in like the 4th or so.....holy sh@!.....thatd be amazing!!!!im thinking this....

1)Nelson/Landry or Okoye
2)Schaub
3)Jason Hill
4)Courtney Brown
5)Paul Solaili
6)Brian Smith
7)Kicker
