What's their connection?

Blake

MMQB
So in this thread I would like to discuss potential draft picks based upon their connection with the Texans and its management.

It doesn't have to be our first pick either. It can be players that will be selected later on in the draft.

So the big 2 IMO would be:

Jedeveon Clowney: Gamecock, same as Bob McNair. Drafted Dunta Robinson and DJ Swearinger from SC. McNair has publicly discussed speaking with JJ Watt about mentoring the kid if we draft him.

Blake Bortles: Bill O'Brien worked under George O'Leary for many years at GT. George O'Leary is the head coach of the UCF Knights and Bortles. O'Brien also played against Bortles last season when he was coaching Penn State.

I have yet to find a solid connection between Bridgewater besides the fact that we have drafted 3 Cardinals over the years including a QB and a first round DT.

Manziel: Played right down the road at aTm. Houston has a ton of aTm football fans.

Allen Robinson: Penn State Player

DaQuan Jones: Penn State Player

Kelcy Quarles: South Carolina Player

Vic Hampton: South Carolina Player

4 Drafted from School:
Virginia Tech
Miami (FL)

3 Drafted from School:
Louisville
Texas
Alabama
LSU
Pittsburgh
Wisconsin

Good stuff.

Max Bullough - 7th round - ILB

Romeo just coached him in the East/West Shrine game and I think he can play STs effectively if he fails at ILB. I still think this guy MIGHT have a chance at being a solid role player on our defense.

I would add Beau Allen, Wisconsin and Justin Ellis La Tech. Possible big NT types.

Bill O'Brien saw Jeremy Gallon hit his defense for 7/95/1

Bill also saw Beau Allen in game action for Wisconsin. As well as other stars from Ohio State, Nebraska, Minnesota, ect.

I really think the "BOB saw X player play last year against Penn State so he might draft him" argument is really overblown. People thinking Bortles is a viable option because UCF beat Penn State last year is just dumb. He saw Bortles for 1 game, and studied him for about a week leading up to that. That's not nearly enough knowledge to know whether or not Bortles is worthy of the #1 pick.

If he picks Bortles, I sure as hell hope it's because he fits BOB's system, and because of the hours of tape BOB watched. Playing against someone once in 2 years of college coaching is not a reason to draft someone. I would also hope that if he picks Bortles, it's because he believes he's the best QB in this draft to do the things he asks of QB.

Now players at Penn State who played under BOB I could understand. There is a real connection there and BOB will be aware of how they conducted themselves on and off the field. He will know a lot about those players, and will know how they work in his system. That's a good connection to have, especially when looking at guys who fall to later rounds or UDFAs after the draft.

/rant :)

Some Penn State guys that might work for the Texans:

DaQuan Jones, DT, Penn State Height: 6-3. Weight: 323. Projected 3-5th

John Urschel, OG Penn State Height: 6-3, Weight 317 lbs Projected 5-7th

Malcolm Willis SS Penn State 5-11 215 UDFA

Glenn Carson ILB Penn State 6-3 244 Projected 7th-UDFA

Eric Shrive OT Penn State 6-6 323 Proj UDFA

Brandon Felder WR Penn State 6-2 200 UDFA

Adam Gress OT Penn State 6-6 320 UDFA

Matt Lehman TE Penn State 6-6 262 UDFA

I hope that others dont view this thread the way you just did. I totally agree with you that if they draft someone it needs to be for the right reasons. All I am saying here is that there is a connection. A small part of the puzzle that is known as the NFL draft.
