What receiver would you take with your 1st Rd Selection

O.G.

Waterboy
Ok, if the texans can't get Landry, Hall or Nelson due to trading down and they don't go in the Direction of of DE or DT as well as Offensive line, what receiver which is a very glaring need would you take in the mid 1st round? I like either Dwayne Jarrett, Dwayne Bowe or Robert Meachem.

Out of those guys I'd like Meachem....I think he'd be a good fit for us...

But honestly I'd rather go Chris Houston or even a Justin Blaylock....

I like Robert Meachem the best after Calvin Johnson.

However I'd still rather us get more help on the D for our 1st round and probably 3rd too. i think anderson will be okay for next season but not as good as meachem thats for sure.

If our Defense looks a lot better by the 'o8 draft. we got some real good LT's, WR's and RB's that will be there. hopefully we will be picking around middle of the round and can take the bpa from them or D again. Mario Manningham would be real nice, or mario urrutia, limas sweed, desean jackson. I like those 4 better for a 1st rd pick than the ones this year.

did Jarret do something like run a 6.3 at his pro day to kill his stock becuase each mock i see, he seems to be slipping. from top 15 to top half to seeing him make it to the 2nd round. did i miss something that happned?

but, i'd like to see later round WR. chris houston would be lovely.

yeah, people saw through the hype and realized he's not really that good.

LOL. I've just heard the guy isn't a willing blocker. Playmaker yes...but once you tagged like that...coaches and GMs are going to refrain from a guy. Our best posible scenario...Dewayne ends up with Vincent. Those two were tailor made for each other.

Well I'm an LSU fan so I know the most about Dwayne Bowe, so I would be fine with the Titans drafting him because I know he's a good receiver. Meachem, Jarrett, Ginn, and Rice are all good as well, I just haven't watched them as much.

he doesn't block, and he's not really a playmaker. he'll get you a few TD's in the endzone. but that's about it. sloppy routes, very wimpy with defenders, slow of course...not much to like about him. steve smith on the other hand excels in every category jarrett doesn't, and to me is going to be a very good receiver. he has "new england receiver" written all over him, to me.

As I saw the guys analyze the Arkansas - USC film during the combine, specifically the Jarrett - Houston matchup, I realized the guy I would rather have on my team any day of the week is Houston. Meacham is the WR I'd like to see here (but in a trade down scenario - not at 10).

I wouldn't mind Steve Smith as an Anothny Gonzales light guy. Again, they may do it and draft a wide reciever at the ten...I wouldn't be jumping up and down about it. I think they have bigger holes in the bottom of our little ship than WR2 though.

yeah, i wouldn't bother with WR in the first unless it's a BPA thing. and with ginn's stock falling, there's really no WR that would be called a BPA pick at 10.

Meachem is the guy I'd want. He can stretch the field and would allow AJ a little more room to work. I really am not sure on Jarrett. He ran slow..not a prereq to be good...but he reminds me of Mike Williams..great catches and size in college but might get lost in the pros. Just a guess.

With no other DEs on the board, I just took him for denver in the mock on the other thread. I like Hall also. I just think Houston has a bigger up side. Just me.They're both great players which hit a need of us.

There a lot of guys on this MB who are saying defense first, or trade down if we're going to take a WR, and they may not be wrong in their thinking, but I'd like to tell all of you not to be surprised if Kubiak focuses on the offense in order to set Schaub up with the best chance for success.
We've all pretty much agree that the Schaub trade is a gamble, and you know Kubiak and Smith realize this.
The best way to mitigate the risk associated with this trade is to put the best supporting cast possible around your new QB.
If Kubiak and Smith have, indeed, staked their futures to this trade, they must certainly do all they can to make it work.

With that in mind, I'm saying Meachem is the second best WR in this draft. If he's there at 10, and you want him, you don't pull a Casserly and try to trade down and get him. You just take him at 10, and move on.
You can try to trade down, and maximize your picks, and whatever strategy you like, just be aware that that's the kind of strategy that can get you a Travis Johnson...

This same line of thought could also apply to OL, if you think one will be there who is worth it, but that guy will likely be Levi Brown, and between the two of them at #10, I like Meachem.

BTW, I'm not saying I want a WR at #10, I'm just saying I think Kubiak and Smith have a reason to go that route.

Robert Meacham. I can't figure out why some of you think Meacham would be a reach at 10.

I think all this Calvin Johnson stuff has him underrated.

The only WR I would take at #10 is Calvin Johnson.

I find it almost assinine that a team as devoid in depth as we are would think of addressing WR2 with the 10th pick in the draft, especially after giving up our 2nd round pick for the next two years. I like Robert Meachem a lot, but with the glaring holes in our secondary, at LB, on our defensive line, on our offensive line, and with the hodge podge of question marks at RB I couldn't imagine addressing our only position we have a pro bowler at at 10.

We can look at addressing WR2 in the 3rd or working out a trade to grab some more picks but we can, in no way, afford to use our first rounder on WR when we have Andre Johnson entrenched there for years.

Maybe I'm mistaken but Jarrett didn't run at the combine because of a groin injury and USC's proday is on March 28 so how did you get his 40 time? On campus, he ran a 4.57 per what NFL.com said pre combine numbers. Not blazing, but not Mike Williams either...

actually mike williams ran in the 4.5s at his pro day.

Honestly I don't think we need a definite "WR2"....

I think we can pick up a good WR in the 3rd or fourth and have a "WR2" by commitee...

Between Mathis, Walters, Anderson and maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder we should have enough fire power opposite AJ...

Couldn't agree more on both Houston & Meachem. Houston matched up against Bowe, Rice, Jarrett, & Meachem all this year & looked pretty good. He may be lacking a bit in technique but the natural instincts are there.

Kevin Walter is currently 'entrenched' at WR2... color me unimpressed.

If I am not mistaken, there are still a couple of WR left in FA that would make really good #2s.

Kevin Walter can play but he hasn't proven anything and we should know this year if Mathis will continue to be on our team.

I think you can go WR in the 3rd and still get a good one.

Jarrett hasn't run, yet. USC's pro day is Wednesday.

I'm scratching my head trying to understand why Jarrett is being discounted as a prospect. 20 years old, 41 TDs in his 3 year career, fearless and physical over the middle, the best hands in the draft...Jarrett defines what a playmaker is supposed to be. Reminds me much more of Michael Irvin than Mike Williams.

I guess Chris Houston did have a good game against Jarrett last season, in a losing cause. It's easy to forget that Jarrett dominated the Hogs corner the year before, in a 70-17 blowout. Not to mention that Dwayne has had big games against other top corners like Leon Hall, [SIZE=-1]Antoine Cason, and Daymeion Hughes. Oh, and that was a pretty good secondary Jarrett had his way with in the 2006 Rose Bowl. Anyone see that game?

I don't know how fast Dwayne Jarrett will run in shorts or where he'll be drafted. I'm hoping he goes before Tennessee selects, because I can't see Jeff Fisher & Norm Chow passing him up. As a Texan fan, I cringe at the thought.

he didn't face hall or hughes this year. hughes matched up with steve smith (and he torched hughes). i don't remember the arizona game at all.

i think dwayne bowe would be a good fit here. not at #10 of course. trade down and get an extra 2nd and take bowe with the 1st. he's big and strong, very physical, a very good blocker. lots of intangibles with him. only problem is the drops due to his vision and eyesight. hopefully he's got that fixed.

The reason I mention his speed when he ran was because when timed in the past he wasn't a burner. It is just a general knock on him. Most scouting updates have that as his negative. Again, it doesn't mean he can't be a stud or doesn't run faster than Williams. I just watched both at USC and saw incredible one handed type grabs in traffic, etc and assumed they would both be great. Williams hasn't flourished so I'm wondering if he these guys are men among boys in college and then get locked down in the pros if they can't get off the line.

He's a bum with an attitude. He can't get to tennesee fast enough for me.

Well, he's faced off against Hughes in the past. And that double team on Jarrett this year didn't keep him out of the end zone.

Who's that in Jarrett's rearview mirror?

070109_jarrett_hmed_4p.hmedium.jpg

The guy who applied the paddles to the Trojans' chest, Dwayne Jarrett, did so by stretching the Wolverines' secondary beyond its vertical limit. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Jarrett not only caught 11 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns but also made Michigan cornerbacks Leon Hall and Morgan Trent look as if they belonged on the USC scout team. That's saying something, since Hall made many All-America teams and finished the regular season as a Thorpe Award finalist.

Jarrett saved his best for the fourth quarter. Michigan had closed the lead to 19-11 with a snappy eight-play, 80-yard drive. On third-and-10 from the USC 38, Jarrett simply sprinted past Hall and safety Willis Barringer. He caught a strike from Booty near the Michigan 25, slipped out of a diving Hall's desperate grasp and glided into the end zone for a 62-yard touchdown.

I agree with the poster who mentioned about protecting Schuab. Solidify the o-line in rnd1 with Brown. Get defense in remaining rnds, but if we are looking for a wr, i think we should give the kid from Lane College a peep. I can't remember his name but does any1 remember if he was at the combine and what kind of numbers did he put up. Also like it was stated earlier, there are some better recievers coming out next year that are more in the playmakers role than this year.

Obviously it is not ideal to have such a player as Kevin Walter as your number 2 WR, and obviously WR is a position that needs to be addressed. But, I am a proponent of spreading talent equally over the field. Why use the number 10 pick in the draft on a player that will play second fiddle to Andre Johnson for the next several years when you could use it elsewhere, (ie. FS, RB) where you do not have pro-bowl talent signed long term?

I'm not really advocating a WR at #10 as much as I'm guessing that Kubiak will try to set Schaub up for success as much as possible.
That may mean OL or it may mean WR. If it means OL, then the pick is (or should be) Levi Brown if we stay at 10. If it means WR, things are a little less cut and dry. My pick would be Meachem in this scenario.

Honestly, the majority of the people participating in this thread know more about the draft in general, and more about the prospects than I do.
I just can't get past thinking that this draft will be more offensively oriented than many people think as Kubiak tries to get Schaub as much help as he can.
How can anything be more important to this regime than to make this Schaub trade pay dividends? Quick answer, IMO, is that nothing can be more important.

Another thing to consider is that even though we all agree that FS and CB are a real need, improving the offense helps the defense by keeping them off the field more, and setting them up in better field position. If the O can stop putting the defense in short field situations, stop turning the ball over and give them more leads to protect, this defense can be better than last years as it stands right now.

Got it you two like Dewayne an awefull lot. Load up the roster with offensive skill guys and flounder around with the NFL bottom feeders for the next three years. Might work out. I would of thought after five years of that you would of had enough of it.

Owner Bob Mc Nair was on a Sirus sports Radio talk show yesterday from the Owner's meeting in Pheonix. In his words when asked what's the most glaring need the texans have right now is at wide receiver. He said "they need a legit number two receiver to compliment Andre and they will try hard to resolve that problem in the draft." IMO, they haven't had a legit number 2 receiver next to Andre. Who, Gabbar? Not. The closest thing would actually had to have be D. Williams. I still believe IMO if the can find a willing partner, they will trade back to the mid to late teens and pick up a receiver....unless.....one of the top FS/CB's fall to them.

if i'm rick smith...i know that i'm gonna try and tade down...if they truely believe that the #2 WR is the most glaring need on this team then the guys i target are guys who i feel fit the WCO best...those are not going to be just speed guys those are going to be guys with the ability to sheild defenders away from the ball and find holes in the zones

two guys come ot mind in the first round...dwayne jarrett and dwayne bowe

both are used to playing in the WCO...both are good athletes...i think bowe is a better athlete but jarrett has better hands...bowe is faster...so while both fit the system neither one of them brings the same qualities as the other

if they don't pick a WR in round 1 but make a trade that gives the a round 2 pick sidney rice is the best guy to get

later round guys have been mentioned on this board numerous times...courtney taylor, joel filani, steven smith, andrea allison, and jason hill

neither of them play in a WCO.

really you don't consider the offense that USC and LSU run as a version of the WCO...several guys on the NFL network like Mike Mayock have said that they do...there are several versions of the WCO...some run it like my guys up at Tech...some run it like Coach spurrier does in south carolina...some run it like les miles does at LSU...just because a team utilizes the run more than others doesn't mean their passing doesn't resemble the WCO

unless you're going to get real picky and say there is a huge difference between a pro offense and west coast offense

for college receivers there isn't much difference...the routes they are expected to run and the frequency of them are very similiar to the WCO

i am picky, actually. very few teams run the WCO, pro or college. both USC and LSU incorporate a lot of deep passing into their offense, which is pretty much the antithesis of the WCO.

BTW, I like Walter quite a bit. Just not at WR2.

Why not at #2?

What can you base that assumption on? his underutilization with the Texans because they could only use 2 WR sets mostly to keep someone in to try to protect Carr long enough to give hime time to make reads.

or

the fact that Carr is not accustom to having more than 1 target on the field and does not seem to know how to progress through his reads quick enough to see what the defense is doing?

or is Kevin just slow, lenky, bad hands, sluggish, takes plays off, runs bad routes?

If you answer the third... (I usually never say this, but "you are a moron"

Give the guy a chance, a true chance to start or at least a legit battle for the #2 spot and let him prove what he can do.

If I am not mistaken, there are still a couple of WR left in FA that would make really good #2s.

Kevin Walter can play but he hasn't proven anything and we should know this year if Mathis will continue to be on our team.

I think you can go WR in the 3rd and still get a good one.

Neither is Kubes. But when the coach is talking about Easy ED McCafferty in the same breath as Walters....tells me that you can prety much expect the guys on the board in the third round better blow Kubes away befor he's going to take one. I read it as Walters IS the number 2 in '07. They'll draft a WCO numbers guy to groom.
