What happes if they start to win?

Looking at the remaining schedule, after Kansas City, we don't face any teams that I can honestly say are almost sure losses, except maybe St. Louis and at Baltimore, the rest can be wins.

So, would it be a good thing if they started to put together some wins and finished at say... 5 - 11, or better? With the wins coming from San Francisco, Jacksonville, Arizona and Tennessee.

Or at this point would it be a good idea for the Texans to stop trying, collect their check, and for us to to just give up on them, stop going to the games and hope to get some Bush in the spring?

We as fans can hope for the #1 pick this year, as it provides optimism for future seasons. If the players quit at any time, they will most likely be out of a job at the end of a season. They'll keep trying hard every week and I wish them the best. I am hoping for a few more wins anyway, but also if for no other reason than to kill all the Bush speculation. It's not what we need.

As for Bush... I was against getting him until Davis missed last week.

Another way of looking at this is, what if the 2 halves of the season were switched, and the team was 4 and 4 now, would people be for throwing in the towel after losses to Buffalo and Pittsburgh?

Actually, St. Louis and Baltimore are only names and not good football teams. It is not far fetched that the Texans can have a nice 2nd half which may be the worse thing for the team on the long haul especially if McNair see some hope with the current administration.

If winning meant this staff stuck around another season...I hate to say it but for the best interest of the franchise I'd hope they lose.

I think it's a given right now that Capers is out as head coach. I don't see them destroying any of these teams, just simply beating teams they are on par with, so obviously no improvement over last year, which was the goal heading into this season, (playoffs were only a hope in my mind).

I would personally love it if Capers could stay on as Defensive Coordiantor and we got an offensive minded head coach.

I can see San Fran and 'zona as wins. Now that you bring up Jax and Tenn - those are slight possiblities too since we tend to play up for division rivals. However, I don't think the players / coaches stop trying as mentioned above, their jobs are still on the line and there will be some film to review during the offseason for the new coaching regime.

Definitely as a fan (and season ticket holder) not giving up on them or stop going to the games....'cause you'll never know when we'll see win #2. :yahoo:

We don't need the #1 pick. The only reason we would is if we were trying to get Leinart, but we don't need him and aren't going to pick him, so there's no reason to want/need the top pick because we can get anyone we want from 4-8.

Arizona and San Francisco are teams with decent offenses (moreso Arizona than SF) but no defense whatsoever, so those games should be shootouts and I expect us to win both. St. Louis is the same type of team but they are better overall, and I think we can definitely win that one, especially since it's at home. The Rams aren't a very good road team and they've also had a lot of injuries on top of everything else. The Chiefs will be tough next week. A couple games earlier in the year the Chiefs looked horrible, so if that Chiefs team shows up then we can definitely win, if the good Chiefs team shows then it will be a tough one for us, but still winnable. Tennessee we should have beat at home, that was probably our worst game this year, and I expect us to go there and get revenge. Baltimore has the worst offense in the league and it's usually stellar defense has not performed to expectations and is banged up by injuries, so I expect we should be able to beat them, even at their place. We usually play Jacksonville well and I know we can beat them, although they generally play as good if not better on the road, so that will also be a tough game. Obviously I don't expect us to beat the Colts on Sunday. I expect us to beat Arizona, San Francisco, Baltimore, and Tennessee, and between Jacksonville, St. Louis, and Kansas City I expect we can win one of those, especially since they're all at home. I think we should be 5-11 or 6-10 at the end of the year, and either way almost all of these teams left have good offenses and bad defenses so we should see some more exciting games rather than punters out there every other possession.

That's not true. The TEXANS are starting EIGHT players that were selected from the draft. That's not a very good percentage for an expansion team that was SUPPOSE to be building a young team from the draft. From the scr*wups Casserly has made, I'm not that optimistic!

When Casserly said a 1-7 start in the teams fourth year is nothing more than
a bump in the road, it means only one thing: Casserly is in big time, major
league denial about the status of the team and therfor his own job performance.

The most points we've scored in a game is 20. I can't see us keeping up in a shootout, much less winning one. (Unless it was a kicking shoot-out. We proved we can do one of those. Sort of.)

If the administration turns it around in the second half of the season, why should they not be rewarded with a new contract?

I think it depends on what you mean by "start to win". I think we would have to end up AT LEAST 7-9 for Capers to have any fraction of a chance to keep his job. 6-10 or worse, and he is gone.

For the most part we've played good defenses so far this year, with the exception of Tennessee and Seattle's defense is not that great. We are one of only three teams to put up 20 points on the Colts this year (St. Louis and New England being the others). Here's a look at our schedule and their defensive ranks in terms of scoring and total yards allowed:

Buf: 17th scoring, 13th yards
Pit: 5th scoring, 8th yards
Cin: 3rd scoring, 15th yards
Ten: 25th scoring, 20th yards
Sea: 12th scoring, 14th yards
Ind: 1st scoring, 4th yards
Cle: 6th scoring, 24th yards
Jax: 8th scoring, 6th yards
Ind: 1st scoring, 4th yards
KC: 22nd scoring, 28th yards
StL: 31st scoring, 30th yards
Bal: 9th scoring, 2nd yards
Ten: 25th scoring, 20th yards
Ari: 27th scoring, 19th yards
Jax: 8th scoring, 6th yards
SF: 32nd scoring, 32nd yards

The average rank of defenses we've played so far is 9.6 in points allowed and 13.0 in yards allowed.
The average rank of defenses we have left is 19.4 in points allowed and 17.6 in yards allowed.

That said, the majority of the tougher defenses in our schedule are behind us, and our offense had showed more signs of life the last three weeks, and now that we will finally have Domanick Davis and Andre Johnson back together I look forward to seeing what our offense can do the next 8 weeks. The one dominant defense we play (Baltimore) has the lowest scorign offense in the NFL.

I see your point - but I think it is interesting to note that these numbers are skewed by the fact the teams we've played have benefitted from already having played us, if you know what I mean. I'm sure our 6 net yards passing and 133 yards rushing helped Indy to its 4th place ranking in yards allowed.

Your point is made though, the skew isn't enough to close the gap.

Exactly. I watch every week HOPING for #2. :texflag:

However, that being said, this 1-7 team has shown very little that it can magically pull out of the nosedive.

Sure, it is possible that we win a bunch of games during the second half of the season, but other than the Browns game, they have yet to play a full game of football with any intensity.

Hearing the constant "encouragement" of we played well in the first half, or we kept it close to the end, or any other myriad loser excuses means nothing in the NFL. No record keeps track of close games, or what ifs.

ALL that matters in the NFL at the end of the day is SCOREBOARD.

Yes, but our first round picks are the only good thing we've had going in the draft. One can hope for the best 1st rounder we can get, right? :)

As for the Bush comments, I really see him going first to SF. So Leinart would be available at #2 and there would most likely be at least a couple teams willing to trade up a couple spots to get him - the Jets and Dolphins come to mind; I'm sure there are others.

Even with a turn around of 5 or 6 wins this is still a mediocore franchise going nowhere. Neither Casserly nor Capers have shown an history of sustained excellence in the position they currently are employed. I personally think they are what you see. Experienced, professional behaving, good men who have a below average record at performing in their current positions.

What would you guys think of trading down for some extra picks and still get a LT that we need so bad? There are a few team that are desperate for a QB ie Matt Leinart.

I like the thought of that. Although they will take time to devleope. Mix in another quality O-lineman through FA and we would be on the right track. Perhaps pursue the best atheletes available after that. Now if we can just get the NEW coaching staff onboard, we will be all set.

I think that anything we do with our high pick in next year's draft will be loved by 25% of the board and blasted by 75%*. There are lots of good options.

*Midway through next year, the numbers will change to 100% and 0% based on hindsight.

I would argue that drafting an OT in the first round would meet with little to no criticism. Even those who may think that Bush or whoever is a better player would understand the move.

Never give up on the team. I think we have about 4 more wins (minimum) ahead of us - Jags, Titans, 49ers, Cardinals.

As far as the coaching and gm situation, everyday it's becoming very likely that those 2 would be gone at the end of the season. I hate it for Capers, actually - yes, I'm part of the Fire Capers Club. But, like Jack Pardee was too nice and just seemed tp lose the team afterwards - at least Pardee was able to get the Oilers to the playoffs, and even turn a lousy beginning to the season into a playoff season.
