I don't expect Slaton to perenially challenge the 1000 yard mark in his career. I suspect that he will rarely, if ever, get 20+ carries in a game (with a per-game average of about 11-14 carries). He might go over 1000 in a season where he can reel off a few homerun TDs, but I don't think we drafted him to get 240+ carries per season.
I think the idea is to get production from the entire stable of not-quite superstar TBs while letting other teams hemorrhage the money needed to pay the individual superstars like LDT or Larry Johnson. A great TB's career is too short and injuries too frequent to justify tying up that kind of cap space in them--even if the occasional LDT proves to be worth every penny of his deal.
So I'm hoping that Slaton--like all of our backs--is expected to play an ensemble role in the offense. If he can have seasons where he puts up 800-900 yards on 180 carries over a full season, then he'll be an unqualified success in my book. And, if he shows he can be a 275-1400 yard guy, then, as mentioned above, we sell him to another team for a king's ransom of picks and talent.
