What about Jamarcus Russell?

Jawja Texan

Practice Squad
Best passer in the SEC this year. Incredible athlete. I think he would be a great replacement for Carr. Any thoughts?

Not available at pick #8 plus I think the team would be better served addressing the OL or DB situation in the first round.

I'd love to have him, but I don't see any way he will be available with the 8th pick. With so many other needs, though, I don't want to give up a mother lode of draft picks to move up to get him.

I think we would be smart to start thinking about replacements for Carr, for sure, if the powers-that-be can be convinced to make him unemployed. I haven't started looking at prospects yet (stupid work, getting in the way of offseason-mode) but "best passer in the SEC" doesn't mention things like strength of schedule, w/l, offensive scheme, things like that. I get nervous about guys who are in pure passing schemes who beat up on lesser teams.

That said, I know nothing about the relative strength of the SEC to the other conferences.

So my most informed answers would be:
1) I'll chime in once I know more
and
2) He's got a cool name. Jamarcus. Sounds like someone from Gladiator.
3) I get nervous about early first-round quarterbacks, especially when CC (Clueless Ceandris) Brown is lost in space. I would love a replacement safety, especially if there's one worthy of the #8 who can operate in space.

I think he might last until the eight pick, the saints didn't think they could get reggie bush last year. So you never know. But also, I was hearing chris landry last night on FOX Sports Radio, and he said that he had concerns about jemarcus because he thinks he might be a little lazy. And he worries that he might become kind of like Culppeper, great Talent but lacks motivation and doens't really gives it his best.

a while ago i figured russell's stock would rise enough where he could wind up going where the texans pick. but now, he's gone beyond that. barring a terrible combine, he's pretty much going to be gone by the time the texans pick.

So who do you think is gonna draft him. The raiders or Lions. Those are the only two teams that I think will draft a QB. The Browns need alot of needs and I think they wanna give Frye some more time. The Bucs hace Chris Simms, the cardinals have linart, the redskins campbell, and the vikings have a rookie project who they drafted last year, can't remember his name.,

i can see the raiders trading for chris simms actually. the bucs signed him really just so they could trade him. gruden doesn't like him, there's no reason why he should stay in tampa. but even if the raiders don't trade for simms, they'll go after another vet, and the lions and browns will probably go 1 and 2 with QB's. lions take russell, browns take quinn, who's already campainging to play for them.

That could happen, but I have been hearing on sports radio from scouts is that the Lions are in love with Quinn and will be the only Qb that they will take. Also, Jemarcus is not all hunky dori, that he might lack motivation and just wants the Money and this is coming from Chris Landry. Also, gruden wants to win now, and he likes veteran QB's. I don't think he wants to wait two or three years. Just remember that many players play great in bowl games and then drop a liitle bit after more scouting and personal workouts are conducted.

Nevermind on the Bucs taking a rookie QB, I misread your post, but I still think the Browns won't take A QB.

yeah, chris landry's analysis is what really bothers me about russell. i've heard him say for a few weeks now that he really questions his work ethic and attitude. and landry is pretty close to the LSU situation, i trust what he says. as for the lions being in love with quinn....i'd say it's far too early for a team to be in love with anyone so much that they'd form an absolute opinion. there's still a few more games left...

Who says Carr is even being replaced at this point? As of right now he is our QB and until that changes they won't be looking at a QB in the 1st round, likely in the 2nd or even 3rd rounds either. If the front office didn't succumb to the local pressures of drafting Vince in the 1st last year they won't draft a QB high in the draft this year unless they decide to move Carr, and to this point they have not made that decision so it's kind of a moot point to be arguing until they reveal their plans for Carr, and all indications I've seen lead to that Carr will be here next year.

I only saw him in the bowl game. A bad fit for the Texans. :sarcasm:

When under pressure Russell stepped away and threw a completion.
Texans: Drop the ball while assuming a fetal position.

Also he threw passes that went more than 3 yards past the line of scrimmage. And hit receivers in stride. And took snaps under center and in the shotgun. And he threw more TDs than INTs.

Sorry, not the Texans kind of QB.

Though I agree with your sentiment that Carr must go, Jamarcus is not the answer. People are getting a little too fired up. I mentioned this in an earlier post and it has been thrown around on national and local radio but Jamarcus has a little bit to go. He WILL be a stud in my book. Big guy with a big arm and seems smart. However, he is project raw right now. He studded out on a ND defense that is weak. When he played against top defenses this year he struggled mightily. NFL Ds would eat him alive. It isn't a knock on him, just a question on whether we need him. I guess if you wanted a vet and him learning for a year or so, yopu could do it.. On top of that, I don't think he'll last until 8. In fact he might not last past 1.

Nice points. I did get a little fired up. I've watched him all season, and he is a little rough around the edges. But Dear God, the potential is phenomenal. Critics were sure that Vince wouldn't make it in the NFL. Russell could possibly dominate the game.

What do ya'll think are chances of getting him at number 8, if he comes out? Personally I think he's going to be every bit as good, if not BETTER, than VY and well LSU ain't quite in texas, its the closest powerhouse after UT so go look at it from that angle. The guy's a beast, has a winning attitude, cocky as hell but I like that in a quarterback. He verbally states he is the best QB in the nation, and hey...he did nothing but prove it against Quinn. Personally, I think he will stay another year. This was his break away year, and next year, He will be a legitimate heisman candidate, a good chance at the national title, and assuming he just gets even better, will likely up his stock in the NFL. Vince Young came out the same year he broke out in college, but he was a runner up at Heisman, and won the national title. That was the best time to come out. I don't know, I really like this kid, and think he would shut up a lot of the VY lovers. (I'm one of them by the way)

Needing and getting him are too different things. Unfortunately, the Texans are probably too high up in the draft order at 8th to have a chance at Russell. And I don't want to trade up to get him either. We need all the draft picks we can get. What I do like though is that if JaMarcus does declare, then maybe an Adrian Peterson, Joe Thomas, or Gaines Adams falls to #8.

We need as many stud juniors to come out as possible to sweeten that 8th pick, whomever it may be.

He is raw though. It will certainly be interesting and it is nice to see the Raiders in the hotseat of who they take. I never liked the Raiders and I hate Notre Dame. So seeing Brady ("he's going to be one of the top three quarterbacks in the NFL in two years") Quinn flop marvelously on the big stage....again...was a joy to see. Hoping Al screws up nicely with the first pick!

You do know don't you that Jim Brown I believe only missed one regular season game his entire career. I don't think this cookie fits that cutter.

Jim Brown also played in an era where he was bigger and faster than almost everyone on defense that he faced.

As I said above, I like the guy but find him raw on a year away from where VY was before he came out. Actually maybe in between. I think VY had proven himself and had proven he could throw under pressure. Attitude is great when it produces wins. He got shut down pretty bad against top talent. He would be a good guy to have sit for a year in my book. Again, though, he won't last past 8, probably 1.

he needs to work on his touch and a little more on accuracy. especially on threading the needle and throwing to locations like to the receivers right or left shoulder...little things like that. reading defenses comes with experience...and alot of time watching film. he just needs some experience and really refining his craft to become a more disciplined QB.

I'm surprised to hear Landry say he's concerned that JR is lazy. I'm an LSU fan and that's the first time I've heard that. The only thing I ever hear about JR out of Les Miles and Jimbo Fisher, our o-coordinator, is what a high character kid he is, how respected he is, how unselfish he is, how smart he is (yes, contrary to popular myth), etc, etc.

If he lacks motivation, he hasn't shown it in a game in his three years of playing. All I see is a guy who's grown in poise, decision making and leadership. He's rallied us late a number of times and just continues to progress. Stat-wise, this year he threw for over 3,100 yards, 29 touchdowns and I think 10 ints. His completion percentage was 68 percent, and we won 11 games for the second year in a row. If he's lazy, give me more lazy QB's like that!

I wouldn't mind if we drafted him. I would say let him sit for a year and learn. Everyone is saying he needs another year and he's too raw. Thats fine, we'll have kubes teaching him. Bring him in a few games let him get aclimated slowly and not rush him in. let him play behind carr, sage, plummer...whoever starts for us next season.

our offense would be crazy for the 2008 season with our o-line a lot more solid, experienced by then...a more consistent running game..esp if we draft a top one next draft. Jamarcus comes in starting when everything is clicking. SCARY!!

I think it is just more of how he addresses the public and how he carries himself. I equate it to being more non-chalent than lazy.

I honestly think that Carr would be an ideal QB for the Raiders and someone they would be interested in if we dangle him. He goes back home...kinda, and gets a new start with what is a better WR prospect than AJ, a top 2 overall LT and a good defense. I think Sage would be our starter this year and Russell would take over next year if that is the route we take. I also like Bohm at #8, but I still want defense. I just won't complain if we draft either of those two QB's, I just don't want them rushed out there this year. I'm more a fan of the Carson Palmer route than the David Carr route on development.

Welcome to the board macaronitoni! Good 1st post. Unfortunately, I think our chances of getting Russell at #8 are "slim and none, and slim just left town." Can't see him falling to #8 unless something happens between now and draft day, like a bad combine or some kind of injury.

What I do like about him coming out (if he does), and somebody else mentioned this in this thread, is that it should push someone else we had no chance of getting into our range at #8. This should make things more interesting :shades: in the coming months. When do the Jr's have to make their decision?

Hey, i'll be the first one to eat crow & say if he falls to us, (not likely) we should take him. People were talking about VY's ease of passing the ball, this dude's arm is extremely Live & is like VY in that he's a load to bring down.

He's just got to work on protecting the ball & not putting so much air under the ball when he throws deep & he's good to go. maybe sit him for a year or so to work on those things & learn the offense & defenses he'll face.

the above is a post of mine in another thread & notice the "eat crow" line in the beginning, that tells you how i felt about him before. I've watched him in short spurts over the season & was kind of on the fence with him if we ended up tops in the draft. but he showed up in his biggest game to date which IMO bodes well for him.

Yes and that was my point. The cookie ,All Day, doesn't fit that cutter...Brown. But not going to say the brownies won't take the guy. Either you think the guys injury history is something or you don't. We'll find out the end of April.

I just think , that after our experences with DC, and with what is in the pipeline, it'd be nice for once this organization held it's water. You know show a little vision. The '08 running back crop is going to be very sweet indeed. So is the OLT crop. Instead of the win now philosophy, be nice to see them do what the Jets did last year and set the table for the '08 draft. Go D this year and go O next. Thats where the big boards strengths are at. Can we agree, we're more than a couple of pieces away from a SB run ? I thought that was what the Mario pick was all about last year. Building for a SB run. Was I wrong ? Russel is a fair propect with the big gun. I don't know the guy and his motivation. All I know about him is, he is a prospect that warants the 8 pick if he falls. How they'll squeeze that into a ten to 13.5 million cap window, I don't know.

I heard on ESPN radio tonight that JR had a 70% pass comp. so to speak that he is not very accurate is not exactly correct. I also heard that he chokes under pressure, and the argument to that was that under pressure of close games in the last two years, and as a starter, he is 12-4. When I mean close, I mean by 7 points or less. So in all actuallity I see him as a WINNER. that is the most important thing to me. I do agree, that he is rough around the corners, but I do believe if he is there at the 8th position, take him, and sit him for a year to learn, and kind of smooth those edges, so to speak.

he's made plenty of bad decisions under pressure. he's made some good ones, too. that's kinda his thing; inconsistency and mind-bogglingness at times.

He had a 67.8 completion %...and he actually throws downfield. It's easy to get a high % on three yard dunks.
