Wes Welker: Suspension for Ampetamines

Wes Welker is single-handedly making me quit fantasy football.

Meanwhile, Bill Belichek is sitting in his underground lair, giggling to himself and popping a newborn baby into his mouth.

I dunno, Denver got Welker a lot cheaper than what NE paid Amendola.

Do you think that's because he's a vindictive bastard, or because he knew about Welker's indulgences?

Man, the NFL is such POS for dropping this crap now. They know that They make Millions through FF and they wait until all of the drafts are done for them to do something like this days before the season.

Meh - for every league in America, there's only one owner who cares (and as you might guess, I'm not that owner).

How you figure they make millions off of fantasy?

Expanded fan base due to fantasy interest, increased general interest in the league and increased web traffic to their website.

The NFL hate the sportsbook so much because they have found a legitimate way of marketing the industry, which makes them far more money.

Have you not seen the spike in revenue for the NFL in the last 10 years? Do you know how many people watch extra football and care about teams and games they normally never would if it wasn't for the players they own in FF? Ratings all over the place. How much do you think the NFL has made off of advertising in the last 10 years? Has that been all due to FF? Of course not, but you'd have to be on crack to think that it hasn't generated multiple Millions for the NFL for years. Hell, NFL.com is one of the biggest FF sites to run leagues from. The amount of users they have that surf their site before and throughout the season is endless practically. There is revenue that FF is helping the NFL to generate every place they advertise their product, because a ton of viewing is taking place directly due to FF.

Your argument is that the league is making more money off of free leagues from die-hard football fans that were already giving the league their money? Or is it from the casual fan that still mostly follows their local team and drafts people from their local team or auto-drafts? Fantasy football is usually the extremes; either a guy is following everybody or just their team. People follow the stat sheet, not necessarily the player/team. NFL isn't making money off of free public data.

Forbes had an interesting article about FF and it's estimated $70 BILLION, LINK.

The size of this market also shows how much the NFL, and other sports leagues, lost in potential royalty revenue when the Supreme Court refused to consider the 8th Circuit’s decision to deny Major League Baseball copyright status for the use of player names and statistics in fantasy leagues. While from a legal standpoint, the decision makes sense in that the data used is publicly available. Nonetheless, from an economic standpoint, the revenues and activities derive from the sporting activities, and even a 10% royalty would have generated a sizable new revenue stream for leagues. In the terminology of economics, this amounts to a “positive externality” – a benefit supplied by sports leagues for which they do not receive (full) monetary compensation. The NFL does run fantasy leagues on its own site and any licensed use of NFL products generates revenue. In addition, there is some evidence that fantasy activities increase viewership on the part of players, which, indirectly, benefits the league.

Speaking of which, do you think Belichick knew about Welker's use & decided not to resign him because of it? I think it's plausible. I also think he knows something about Logan Mankins, that may or may not come out, which led to his separation from the New England Patriots.

Molly isn't on the banned list, but apparently his was cut with the amphetamines.

Know what you're taking.

But it IS on the NFL substance abuse list. This piece will answer many of the questions that surround Welker's case.

In an email to the Denver Post, Broncos receiver Wes Welker has denied that his four-game suspension after testing positive for amphetamines was due to consuming adulterated MDMA at the Kentucky Derby, a story reported by Pro Football Talk.

"I wouldn't have any idea where to get a Molly or what a Molly is," Welker he said. "That's a joke. I don't do marijuana, I don't do drugs. I don't do any drugs."
Welker's alternate theory for how PED-class amphetamines showed up on his drug test? He's not sure, but he wonders if somebody slipped something into his drink.

We will never, ever know what actually triggered the test. That's how it's supposed to be under the NFL's arcane and secretive drug testing procedures, in which the league is not allowed to announce what a player tested positive for or even the circumstances surrounding it, and players are allowed to offer up any reasoning or excuses without the possibility of being contradicted. A player could tell the media he was abducted by aliens and implanted with HGH and the NFL couldn't say boo about it.

So there's no particular reason to believe or to disbelieve that recreational molly use was what tripped a drug test for Welker, as opposed to taking amphetamines for their performance-enhancing effects. There is reason to believe, given Mike Florio's record of accuracy and his history of using league sources, that the molly defense came up at some point, perhaps at Welker's appeals hearing. Is the molly defense, previously used by Orlando Scandrick, merely the new Adderall defense, an un-counterable claim to win public sympathy and shunt aside claims of PED use?

(Here's where we take a second to clear up the "isn't MDMA already an amphetamine?" question. Yes. But it's classified as a recreational drug, a different type of amphetamine than one that would would under the umbrella of a performance-enhancer. Pure MDMA—which probably doesn't exist on the street—would flag a player under the NFL's substances of abuse policy, and a first offense would carry no suspension. Welker's four-game suspension is the result of a first-time violation of the NFL's separate PED policy.)

Even as Welker publicly denies recreational drug use, he's willing to embrace the plausible deniability that accidental ingestion gives him. From his statement:

"I would NEVER knowingly take a substance to gain a competitive advantage in any way. Anyone who has ever played a down with me, lifted a weight with me, even eaten a meal with me, knows that I focus purely on what I put in my body and on the hard work I put in year round to perform at the highest levels year-in and year-out.

"I want any youth football players and all sports fans to know, there are NO shortcuts to success, and nothing but hard work and studying, leads to success."

Welker went on to call the NFL's drug policies and procedures "clearly flawed," and vowed that he would work to save the next innocent EDM fan from falling victim to the tyranny of the undiscriminating piss test.

Ahh, the old "somebody slipped something into my drink" routine. I hate when that happens...

The NFL needs to mandate that their players wear that new nail polish that turns a different color when you dip your finger in your drink and there is a date rape drug or any general prohibited substance from the official NFL banned substances guidelines.

One very important point to be taken away from this article and this case (the article did not specifically address this). But these days, MDMA virtually NEVER exists as a singular ingredient........It will virtually ALWAYS contain a "true" recognized amphetamine (like Adderall), since mixing a small amount of "true" amphetamine will greatly intensify the desired effects of the MDMA (while large amounts will nullify these effects).

heh-heh-heh, no doubt. Here you go, Wes!
