Well's Haters

This really gets me! Wells for the second time put up a decent showing against a good run defense (ranked 6th), and he gets **** for it... Come on folks.. Get off his back. He put up a touchdown, over 100 yards (not including the TD called back due to holding). Give him some credit... The zone has opened up some routes for him he didnt have in the past, and the O-line is now helping him... He aint a bad player, get off his case... :goodbad:

Who's givin' him ****? He has gotten perhaps more than blame than he deserved over the past few years, but everybody seems to be giving him his well deserved props today.
After a few years he is developing into exactly what we thought when we drafted him. It took him a while to warm up at Ohio State, too.

One comment in another thread was:

1. Wells was running well but was RARELY going for more than about 4 yards. His numbers can be attributed to a few good runs, and a slew of average ones.

There have been a few others around.

I saw him fighting hard for yards... I only saw 1 time he really hesitated, and for being a third string running back, I thought he did a very good job stepping up and in. :boxing:

Yeah... My hate on the guy has a reason to simmer down, now... I guess the horrible line and rookie inexperience were to blame. We have three good backs, each with a very different style.

If you could pull up the old MB you could check out my support of J.Wells from the start. I am a Big D.Davis fan because he is from LSU and wish him always the best but I wish that for all our players...I have only voice dislike of one player because he sucked....STEVENS!!!! That boy couldn't play on my High School team(Cy~Fair FIGHTING BOBCATS!!!). Anyway, I am really glad he has stepped up and ran hard over the past few games that he has gotten his second chance.

I second the Steven's comment.

wells played good. i just dont want him to start, unless he continues to put up numbers like this. i want dd back but i DEFINATLY dont want him to be our #1 reciever again.....it is just we can do some even better things with our offense when he is in. just if he turns the ball over then i dont know what to do.

EXACTLY.....i mean i was happy w/ the way Wells played but D.D can do more things when he's in. He had a few bad games so lets not just forget what he did for us in 2003. PLEASE get well D.D !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good game by Wells!!! I am glad we got to step it up when we needed it.

I stay even keel on this.. I don't think we have a runningback that strikes the fear into opposing defenses at this moment... but if we don't fumble we have some backs that can make woody hayes happy (ole 3 yards and a cloud of dust) :D

He's our 1st 100 yard rusher this season. On top of that he did it against a defense that was 6th in the NFL against the run, which says alot about both the blocking up front and Wells himself. I'm happy for the guy, he played a big part in the win.

geez yall take everything out of context. I posted the comment about wells rarely going over 4 yards.. but it was in relation to him getting the ball 3 times in a row on the 10 yard line.. when they guy is RARELY breaking for more than 4 yards.. and he has just been stuffed for no gain .. and you have 10 yards to go.. you dont give him the ball a 3rd time expecting him to amazingly run it in.

Anyway.. ive been a wells supporter for a LONG time and I think he really stepped up and showed that he is capable of playing in the NFL. I think he may have won the #2 spot behind davis.

Vinny, what do you think of Wells performance, because I know that your not a Wells fan, I think he did good, I think he looks diffrent from his rookie year and what do you think changed?

It is nice to have depth. I prefer DD and Hollings to Wells, but he is a quality backup and special teams performer. I just don't see the big play potential from Wells.

I was just wondering if anyone knew if Wells has moved ahead of Hollings on the depth chart. Hollings got a few carries last game, but Wells definitely had the majority. I wanted to know if they are trying to ease Hollings back after the injury or if Wells is now No.2.

aphia1996...hell yeah i second your post...didn't know there was another cy-fair alumni here...bfnd baby

as for wells...he's a decent runner...still think he runs to tall when hitting the hole but that's my opinion...he did have a fumble inside the redzone which kills me...cause other than that he had an awesome say at work...still think we need to find a back that can hold onto the rock and can be an everydown back...not to mention can stay healthy throughout the season

I was pretty high on what Wells might be able to do going into 2002 and then after watching him for a year I decided that he simply is what he is. He's not terribly fast, he doesn't run all that tough, and he isn't going to start for anyone, anywhere.

Last season the difference between what DD was doing and what Wells had done the year before was striking. I did feel that Wells had nowhere near the line play that DD got so direct comparisons weren't particularly fair to Wells. He got zero blocking in 2002, Davis got pretty good blocking at times in 2003. Regardless Davis still seems to me to be the better back.

Watching Wells yesterday getting his first start of 2004 I saw a lot of things I liked out of him. He ran hard which is something he didn't do at times in 2002 and it's something he can fix (and he apparently has fixed it). He still isn't fast (which is something that he can't fix and never will) but he's seemingly found his style.

He still lacks the ability to change direction quickly and create something. He's not going to break loose to often. He's going to follow his blockers and get what's there. If they dominate then he's going to get good yards. If they get beat he's going to get 2.6 yards or something like that.

Right now I'm calling him our 2nd best back. I put him ahead of Hollings based solely on his experience and the growth he's shown. He's ahead of him in that area and that makes him more effective. Hollings is obviously faster and has more upside but he's yet to get in there long enough to really produce and get the reps he needs to improve.

I'm proud of Wells for what he did yesterday. He stepped up and he deserves all the praise he gets. Nobody should be hating on Wells after yesterday and I certainly don't. It doesn't erase the limitations he has though. They're just simple facts. The only place Wells would be starting in this league is Miami right now.

If Wells starts again next week and throws out another good performance with a higher average per carry then I'll take my hat off to him. If he knocks off some more rust and gets better then maybe he's more than he's shown. I'm not going to be the one to say it's impossible. I believe it's unlikely, that's all.

I think Davis is much better but I do question his durability. It seems as though this getting nicked up is a pattern for him and that's not his fault but it is a problem.

Wells is good though and he has a great team attitude which is so important.

I think Wells has improved immensely since 2002 when he was running behind a mediocre offensive line. I wonder how we will juggle the carries once all 3 of our runningbacks are healthy.

Look Wells had a very nice game yesterday. He had an average rookie season because he was a rookie and our o-line was **** back then. Obviously he has improved but I'm not going to declare him the starter over Domanick Davis just yet. Let's wait and see what happens, but a Davis and Wells backfield looks very nice.

I have liked the efforts of all 3 backs this year. Injuries do play a part. As I have mentioned before, I'd like to have a big ol' power back that could guarantee 3 yds every time he touched the ball in a short situation. Wells may come to fulfill that role as he ran strong yesterday. As others have said, blocking makes an average player look pretty darn good. I think the player will depend on the play. As 4th round picks, Wells & Davis make Casserly look like a genius. Why did Baxter have a return? Was Moses out for that play?

Wells had a great game yesterday under the circumstances, but I still view him as the 3rd stringer, altough he is giving me pause to wonder if he might slip ahead of Hollings. You can't teach speed, and Hollings has that in spades. Anyone remember that run of his in the preseason? Think Wells can do that? Wells reminds me a little of Gary Brown.

As to DD, is it just me, or does anyone else notice the irony of winnning 2 games in a row, with DD on the bench? Look at the way the offense has opened up in these games. Look how Billy Miller has been brought back from the witness protection program. Look how Carr is exploiting the seam against the cover two all the sudden. It seems to me that DD was the equilvent of Linus's security blanket. Since he has been out, Carr has been forced to survey the field, and not rely so quickly on the checkdown to the RB. It wouldn't bother me at all if DD was out another week or two. I hope this will also be a lesson for when DD gets back. :twocents:

Okay. Today I am enjoying a nice big bowl of crowe. I admit Wells has not been one of my favorite players to talk about. I have enjoyed his team first attitude and I believe that is why we are talking so great about him today. His play resulted in a win so I am more than happy to eat this bowl of crowe.

I believe his opportunity came at the right time as maybe now the coaching staffs eyes have opened to Carr being the man the offense needs to go through. I believe Davis would've had a break out game this week though on some of the runs Wells couldn't make. I also believe Wells was a big factor on 3rd down and I believe those short gains are the ones that Davis has more trouble making, and him being a bigger backs allows us not to be so predictable on those 3rd and short situations because we won't have to be in an I formation each time.

The thing that strikes me is Wells only put the ball on the ground once, because the defender got lower than he did and put a helmet on the ball. DD is having injury issues and IF he continues to put the ball on the ground IMO we need to take a hard look at our RB situation.

Maybe Hollings shouldn't take too bad a hit for the botched exchange/fumble, but he definitely got away with another fumble that wasn't called by the refs (it was pretty clear on replay--WHEW!!). Bottom line, as stated earlier in this thread by a couple of people, is that Hollings doesn't have much experience and isn't proving any more or less durable than DD. The guy has 134 yards rushing in his whole career.

Right NOW, in my view, Wells is a better back. BUT, it's not that simple. They both have a career 2.9 rushing average. Hollings is faster and a better receiver. Wells is stronger and is a better blocker. They provide different things for different situations.

Come to think of it, Wells has practiced as a backup fullback when Norris and Baxter were hurt. Why couldn't we get both Wells and Hollings on the field at the same time?

I think DD should start when he is healthly, of course. But, I see his time on the field, per game, going down and down. His fumbles are probably partly because of weariness, although I've heard the arguments against that. His health is also an issue, partly because the health of ANY RB is always an issue and partly because he is a little small. Wells has proven something and I, like most, am not ready to give up on Hollings yet, either. Right now, I'd like to see a healthy DD playing 50% of the game, with Wells playing about 35% and Hollings getting in a few rushes also. That's just until we see Hollings break out or DD fumble again or whatever happens next.

What I'd like to see is DD for 175 yds. rushing (not receiving) against Minn. and NO FUMBLES. :boxing:

You know, I really think there is something to that. There were no fumbles, which really cost us in our 1st 2 games. Second, the playcalling has improved IMO. Like you said, without Carr being able to give it to DD on easy dunk passes, he was able to survey to people who you are actually supposed to pass to: Recievers and Tight Ends!!! We have a great core of recievers and tight ends, we might as well use them, right?

I also maintain the stance that if DD fumbles, BENCH HIM. He is great, but I don't think he is a guy who can be the difference between winning and losing. Wells and Holling (unfortunately both are fumblers too) are reliable backs as well. You have got to teach this guy not to fumble and there is no better way to drive that point than to keep him off the field. I really like DD and there is no question that DD is our starting RB, but he should not be accounting for over 45% of our offense. Especially when you have a set of tight ends and recievers that are at least top 15 in the league.

I think with the success the team had without DD, he may be driven once again to perform well. Some of DD's fumbles did come from second efforts though. You can't really get too mad at that because alot of DDs second efforts result in positive yardage and TDs.

I am naming my next child after him. I tatooed the number 32 on my chest. I created a bust of him and I'm sneaking into Caton tonight. Satisfied? He played well. without him we would not have won last week. what else is there to say?
