Welcome to the Texans new LBs Mingo and Martin

Funny. You think these guys are good and are seemingly in favor of the trade.
What have I said about Mingo besides I’m not big on him in another post. Wanted to see what Martin was about. This guy has upside I found out. What if I seem to be in favor of the trade. I’ve seen all the never ending negative **** for weeks now. This trade is layered as to emotion. I’ve always supported Clowney on this board and didn’t want to trade him. But his salary demands are off the chart. Building a roster is a balancing act and without cap space nor the foresight to see who we can or cannot re-sign going forward without attention to it, on that level I am definitely in favor of a trade. There is also a side benefit to not having a disgruntled player on the sidelines for a year. I think the trade was in the range of what teams were willing to offer, probably for the same reasons I just gave. I damn sure didn’t want to GIVE UP a one and two and Clowney. It’s only words now but I am learning the Seahawks biggest need was for an edge rusher and before the trade that organization and fans believed Martin was going to be that guy. Funny but we may have gotten the better edge rusher in this trade but let’s see. That why I just want the season to start. Then there is that little existing knee thing that won’t go away.

All I said he WANTED to play on a DE tag. That is so correct it was headed to arbitration before the trade stuff started. It was just the couple mil extra but for his contract extension negotiations. Comprehension problems?

No it was not headed that way. He was not challenging it.

Again, basic facts

Given the large salary cap space, who really gives a f about a couple million to keep your star happy? They wasted all the cap space but can't show any good will to their young and talented player?

They could've kept him for this season and then traded him next season. They didn't need to give him away for jack ****.
What does this have to do with your lack of reading comprehension on the original post?

Martin appears to be a nice asset as a situational pass rusher. Maybe he’ll be able to find 8 sacks this season for us. But run defense is going to take a hit with Clowney gone.

Seems like a good olb prospect. Really like his burst.

According to this vid moderator, as a situational pass rusher only Martin may be expected to have about as many sacks as Clowney last year? One thing for sure, with his burst and energy I want to see him, JJ, and Mercilus rain hell. From a Seattle article I read his QB pressure ratio was Clark level last year.

He can't defend the run so will be just in pass situations

Has it been mentioned that Mingo is a former first round draft pick from LSU. He started 14 games at DE ( in a 43) but will.move to OLB in our 34.

He's a bust. A reclamation project for RAC. Maybe he'll play weak side OLB, meaning he'll need to drop in coverage.

It's going to be a humbling experience. But it will also be a chance to save his career. Hopefully he'll focus on the latter.

I agree.

But reading details of his professional career on wkipedia, this has him listed as starting at outside linebacker, at least to begin the season. He finished last season with 37 solo tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and only 1 sack.

If we get any value from him this season it'll likely be on ST.

Yeah... I'll be surprised if he's starting ahead of Mercilus, which is the position he plays (Clowney's position).

I don't think he's ready to drop in coverage. Scarlett's position.

Reading the Chronicle, Mingo's role was explained as depth for the outside linebacker position.

Looking at the Texans depth chart, the only players behind Mercilus and Scarlett are...Mingo and Martin.

So, how often can, or does, a player, at 29, salvage his career? Going back and reading all the draft profiles, KeKe has all the tools to succeed and was compared to DeMarcus Ware.

He's got millions in the bank. Does he still have the desire? Can Crennel coach up his strengths?

No expectations here but it would be something else to find a diamond inside a layer of carbon.

The scouting report on Mingo is he's an excellent special teams player. Not being sarcastic. Replaced what bademosi offered

6 years later, he’s core special teams player, solid in run stop but never lived up to his ability to hunt, as pass rusher. He fits right in.
So, OB loves tackles that are versatile, players who can play special teams, and running backs that are only good for a couple of yards but can block.

The man just loves football players, contrary to reports stating otherwise, that are well rounded, fundamentally sound and versatile. Yes that’s the ticket!

What is a scrub? Could you define a scrub as a player who plays in the 4th preseason game?

Mingo started the 4th preseason game. Martin came off the bench.
Seriously you are saying they both played in Seattles 4th peseason game of 2019 ?
So one or both both them would have been cut if not for the trade ?

Bark is not worth his $7 million contract. He is negative value.

They dumped him on us.

Guys that play in the 4th president can make the 53. But, they're on the rock bottom of the depth chart. One of these guys may have made the Seahawks. Both, would be doubtful. But let's be honest. They're at the bottom of the Texans depth chart, too.

Head coach Bill O'Brien discussed the Texans young outside linebacker.

"I see him being a guy that did a lot of what he did in Seattle," O'Brien said of Martin. "A guy that can be a four-down defensive end, a guy that can be an outside backer of the edge, a SAM, and then also a guy that is what I call a stemwinder on special teams, a guy that can cover kicks."

Mingo is a bust that keeps hanging onto a job.

I feel bad for the Martin kid. He might be able to help the team. Brennan Scarlett got an extension, for pete's sake. But, Martin will never live up to this trade. He's never going to be Clowney.
He’s not going to be Clowney, but he was pretty productive when playing on 22% of defensive snaps last year. I believe he can give you what Clowney did vs the pass as a rotational guy.

I saw the four- down quote the other day. Hope so. I heard however he needs to keep his weight up and I think he is 6’2”. But that guy is fast and active from the videos I’ve seen. This is the guy I most want to see on Monday. Wonder if he was targeted in this trade.

Texans' Jacob Martin wants to play every down
Aaron Wilson , Houston Chronicle Feb. 9, 2020

Texans linebacker Jacob Martin built an intriguing batting average as a situational pass rusher after being acquired via a trade from Seattle.

Part of the compensation for the Texans' controversial trade of linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, which also netted special-teams contributor Barkevious Mingo and a third-round draft pick, Martin made the most out of his limited snaps.

Martin played in only 21 percent of the defensive snaps, but was productive. He recorded 3 1/2 sacks, seven quarterback hits, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in just 221 defensive plays. During an overtime playoff win over Buffalo, Martin sacked Josh Allen once and recovered a fumble forced by Whitney Mercilus.

Now, the 6-2, 242-pounder wants to hit the weights and the kitchen to build up his body this offseason to become an every-down contributor.

Agree, we have two project guys already. We need WR, CB, interior OL/DL, probably a RB or Higdon, and some depth. Great WR draft, so hope to see a CB and WR in RD2
Unless Mins is there, I hope they go defense with their top 3 picks. If the talent is there.
