Gotta be honest, I was willing to stretch a bit on the extra te's because maybe one would be used as an hback/fullback. It would save us a roster spot and might be more versatile.

I mean.. you (and others) are looking at this the wrong way. I highly, highly doubt this guy will see the field except for on special teams. They could roster him as a kicker, and it wouldn't change a thing. He is there for special teams.
Seems like an athletic kid with the right attitude, for whatever its worth. A 7th round pick is fighting an uphill climb to make a roster anyway, I guess the FO is thinking why not take a chance on a kid who knows ST and wants to play there.

Why would we do that? Theres no running back we could've drafted or signed that would give the production of Alfred Blue so no need for us to go after another RB.

I don't think he's more talented than the te's we have. I imagine one will be cut. I also imagine Cullen will get the axe.

Oh, I don't think this guy is more talented than one of the TEs on the roster. I do, however, think he (potentially) brings more value to the team due to his ST ability than the 4th or 5th string TE.
Like I said above- 7th (and 6th, for that matter) round picks face a tough road to make the NFL roster. I wouldn't be surprised if he is cut.

Houston will likely use Gillaspia at a multitude of positions. He is cut out for special teams and can fill gaps at linebacker, running back and fullback. He ran an impressive 4.53 40-yard dash at A&M's Pro Day in March.
Gillaspia tied A&M's school record for most games played as the 12th Man. He moved from linebacker to fullback this past season with Jimbo Fisher shifting to a pro-style offense. He started at fullback in every game for the Aggies rushing for 33 yards on five carries and caught five passes for 52 yards. On special teams, Gillaspia recorded six tackles in 2018.

Buddy Howell, AJ Moore, Mike Tyson, Johnson Bademosi, Brian Peters all made team last season as core special teamers. Gillaspia blocked 2 punts last season and made 7 ST tackles, i'd say he's got a good shot.

We chose a FB in the 7th round because we couldn't get this guy as an UDFA and have such a plethora of talented depth on the O-line? (That sentence was totally angry sarcasm for those that can't tell) We took 2 project OT's in this draft but still have a bunch of journeymen O-line protecting Watson. I'd have much more respect for the Texans if they swung and missed on more O-line talent, at least they would have tried. This pick reeks of nepotism, who's he related too? I give it an F

If Scharping is a project then basically every OT minus Jonah Williams is a project. Scharping is a ready made NFL OT.
Not according to the scouting reports I've read. He has the size but needs to work a lot on technique, more than Howard
Then we've obviously read/watched info. from different sources. Almost every evaluation I read says that he has limited athleticism and slow feet and is most likely a future NFL OG. TheDraftNetwork has him ranked #113, CBS ranks him #131, and WalterFootball has him as a 3rd or 4th round pick. I'm not saying they're right and I really hope he proves me wrong, but I sure don't see him as a starter at OT, right or left side.

Why read reports when you can watch film and make that decision yourself? The guy shut down 1st round draft pick Brian Burns this past season (0 pressures allowed), started every game of his college career and allowed only 33 pressures on 1,821 career pass-blocking snaps. That is not a project.

I like the pick. I give it a good solid C. First, it was taken where it should have been, the 7th round. Second, the team had no FB on the roster and OB likes to utilize one. Third, his primary role as a FB in senior year was as the lead blocker for RB William's. Forth, he has fairly good hands for catching the ball. But Fifth, and most importantly, is his role as a special team's gunner.
Compare his pro date statistics with Ingold and Wesco, two top FB prospects.Gillaspia is faster and quicker; and strength and explosiveness is their equal.
He should make the team, provided we do go with FB on the roster and will stand out on the special teams.

Exactly. The price we paid is minimal so if he doesn't work out, we lose nothing but the 220th overall pick.
IMO, this pick is typical of the Gaine/BOB philosophy of wanting versatile players that can play multiple positions.
*Both OT picks have played both tackle spots.
*Joe Webb can play QB, WR and ST.
*Gillaspia can play FB, RB, LB and ST.
I'm not saying this approach is right or wrong (although I prefer masters). But it seems to be the direction of the FO.

Aggie jokes aside, I seriously hope no Aggie fan buys tickets (outside friends/family) because of a special teams demon wannabe...I mean I know plenty of Baylor alums (including a nephew) and they aren't sporting Jon Weeks, the long snapper went to my school, jersey.

Well, we coulda that guy. I hope this fb is a rockstar but I think it's a wasted pick.
We only have a limited number of resources. 7th round picks included. The devil is in the details. I think it matters (at least with some coaching staffs.)
The Texans either intend to give another roster spot to a special teams player, or they’re saying that there is no one left in the draft that can masked this team.
How many special teams only players (not including the kickers or snapper) are on the roster? Bademosi, Peters, Webb, Howell? While carrying only 8 offensive linemen and dressing 7? Yet the Texans still don’t have a decent returner? Unless they have Mr. Glass returning punts. I don’t think it’s just being upset over a 7th round pick. It’s a perception of not building a roster that’s developing talent.

Because he was drafted and LB was highly valued this draft class. Just saying if you want special teams depth/talent, get someone who can tackle, bigger body and near elite measureables.
Ty - 6’1 241lbs 10” hands 31 1/2” arms ran a 4.51 forty, repped 220 26 times, five more than Tytus Howard.
Devin White the 5th overall selection of Tampa Bay, is 6’0” 237lbs 9 3/4” hands 32 1/8” arms ran 4.42 forty, repped 220 22 times one more than Tytus Howard.
Devin Bush the 10th overall selection of Pittsburg, is 5’11” 234lbs, 9 5/8” hands 32” arms ran 4.43 forty, repped 220 21 times same as Tytus Howard.
Core special teams as rookie with potential to become a starter @ high impact position where injuries are common place. Production is there 317 tackles @ TCU. White had 286 tackles (3 years) and Bush had 172 tackles (also 3 years). Certainly don’t see star potential of the Devins but a quality LB with comparable measurables who can help on special teams is pretty solid for a 7th rd. pick.
