Welcome to Houston Jaylin Smith

I was very happy Nick drafted Patterson but this is the happiest I have felt about a draft pick since landing Stroud and Anderson.

Higgins is going to be extremely good although I do not understand the fully guaranteed contract but no problems with it due to amount.

This was probably the most criticized selection in this year’s class. But given the retirement of Darby and Ward’s recent arrest, this pick is looking much clearer going into camp. Knowing what we know now it makes sense to spend a top 100 pick on a CB for depth and development reasons.

I am excited to see Smith in camp and preseason. Hopefully we wont need to see him much in the regular season outside of ST, but if needed he’ll be ready.

They also brought in Arnette. Regardless of what you think of him, if his head is screwed on right he's a really talented player.

"The swarm is strong in this one."

I want to see more DB blitzes

I know this post is going to be a little off topic, but I believe Smith will be a good depth piece for this defense. The biggest issue we had last year was no depth on defense. Once we lost Pitre, then Ward, we had no other players to play that unique position in the defense. From what I heard from media that attended rookie, voluntary and mandatory minicamp, they stated that Smith is being groomed for the Pitre/Ward role. Going to be interesting if they keep Ward on the roster and if he can even play this year. I wonder if they will find another player to fit that role if Ward isn't going to be here.

CJGJ is also somewhat a younger version of Ward. Deep safety who likes to hit hard and who’s done some of his best work playing a slot/box safety role.

Arnette and I'm not convinced that Ward will be cut.

Demeco likes to rush 4 and put as many bodies in to coverage as possible.

And considering the amount of pressure and sacks we get with just a 4 man rush I’d say he’s been right.
We do operate a base 4 but it seemed to me that we actually rushed five a great percentage of the time. That is my preference. 5-2-4

I don’t actually believe we did. Not sure where the numbers are but I believe we’re pretty low on blitzes and sending an extra man on pressure.

I think that is DeMeco's plan, but at the end of last season we sent 5 or 6 as much as anyone.

Pass Rush. The Texans' blitz rate in the 2024 season was 22.4% which ranks 27th in the league, with no blitz category higher than bottom 10. On top of that they also rarely ever run sim pressures, 4.4% is the lowest rate in the league by a large distance.

Does that include having five players on the line? I think that is just referring to when we blitzed a defensive back?

Does that break it down by weeks? My contention is we blitzes more the last 4 games we played than the earlier games.

Looks like they were factoring in the amount of blitz throughout the entire season. Sometimes I say him blitz with a linebacker, and sometimes a DB.

Yes @thunderkyss he picked it up in the last 4 games. But overall imo it wasn’t enough. I remember in a lot of games last season I questioned on here why didn’t we blitz. It seems as if Meco relies heavily on the boys in the trenches to hit home.

Here’s the percentage from 2023.

In the 2023 NFL season, the Houston Texans blitzed on 22.4% of their defensive snaps, according to stormcloud.blog. This placed them 27th in the league in blitz rate, indicating they didn't heavily rely on blitzing compared to other teams.
