Welcome back to Houston Tank Dell

I had him going 73 to us in my final mock draft:

The Texans have shown tons of interest in Tank Dell. They visited with him at the combine, pro day, local prospect day and had a top 30 visit. He doesn’t fit the typical mold of a Shanahan WR. You aren’t going to ask him to run block like Robert Woods and Noah Brown. But he is a weapon that is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. I see the Texans manufacturing touches for him to provide a spark for this offense. He will also be the primary KR/PR and Frank Ross will pound the table for him to become one of the best return men in the league.

Round 3 (69, from Rams) — Tank Dell, WR, Houston: Small (5-8, 165), but Houston can't resist taking a player from its backyard given its lack of depth at wideout ... plus Dell's production in 2022 (109 catches, 1,398 yards, 17 TDs).

It seems like I’m in the minority, but I don’t like the pick. He’s a guy that can only play the slot at this level and you already have Metchie for that. That leaves his primary contribution to special teams, and you don’t use a 3rd round pick on that when you have far more pressing needs.

LZ’s comp is Darnell Mooney who went for over 1000 yards in 2021. I think he’s a weapon that transcends positional label. He can be moved all over the offense and be manufactured touches in a variety of ways. He’s not just going to be parked in one position with a limited route tree. This guy is a, “dial number when in need of big play” weapon that the team absolutely needed.

I certainly hope you’re right, but he’s really no higher than 4th on the depth chart, probably 5th. I like the kid and hope he does well, I’m just iffy on the pick in the spot he was taken.

I think he did play some outside at UH. I though I read that in one of his scouting reports.

All he does is make plays and bring excitement. I know most Texans fans aren't accustomed to that.
We're used to the Texans putting these guys on the bench & running a vanilla-bland offense.

If they use this guy like he "should" be used, it would be a new day in Houston.

Duke Johnson, remember him? There was only one reason to put him on this team... but that's not how we used him & there are similar examples...

There was a TE jack of all trades guy a while back. Barely active on game day.

This is a new regime.

I hope they find ways to get him involved on offense. We need playmakers.

I hate to think he'll be a PR/KR specialist.
Hard to imagine the Texans not putting him in the slot on an island on heavy run formations and giving him a chance to make big plays.

That quickness is unguardable.

His production against better competition did not drop off.

I feel pretty bullish on the idea that a lot of teams looked up the size and wrote him off.....

If there is any indication of how the Texans felt about him... they traded up for him. That says a lot.

I’d run him up the middle on first down

I was just playing devil's advocate. But my examples spanned two regimes.

We were a creative offense for about six games until rookie Watson got hurt. Other than that, since 2002 we line them up WYSIWYG offense.

I hope that is changing.
I tend to agree for the most part. But there was a span where you didn't know what you were getting because there were mutiple run/pass options from the same look. That was the strength of that offense. It was vanilla only when the coach at that time went too conservative.

As far as Tank Dell, I like that he wins downfield. He won't be a 50/50 ball receiver but he always gets open.

DeMeco Ryans on his offense - "We have to be explosive in the passing game and I think you can be explosive two ways. Whether it's stretching the field vertically by throwing deep passes 20-plus yards down the field, or it can be passes five yards and under and get it into an explosive playmaker's hands who can create explosive plays, with the run after catch."

Insert Tank Dell.

Watch some film on him and get back to us. This kid is not huge, but has great hands and is like a water bug with the ball. Good luck catching him.
