Well here is my break down of the passing game for this week. Tried to add a conclusion on positive play or whose fault for negative play. There is no way to assign fault to receivers because generally can’t see them. Times are in 1 second increments off the game clock. Comments on OL play on positive plays are provided for judging whether additional time available if needed. If the WR or TE number is even, they are split even unless noted otherwise.
1st QTR
14:18 2nd & 8 3 WR-2R, TE-R. 5 step drop-Carr checks Bradford left then 14:15 throws to Wells to the R. Protection good. Positive play-defined as successful for one of the designed options.
8:51 2nd & 7 4 WR. 5 step drop-8:49 ball out to AJ on left sideline for 1st down. Wade is saved by Wells after being beat inside. As ball is released, Brown is on the ground at LOS and Stroud is at Carr’s feet. Hodg and McKinney double Henderson well. Pitts solo handles RDE. Positive play.
7:17 2nd & 10 (after Brown false start) 3 WR-2L, TE-R. 5 step drop-7:15 ball out to AJ on left sideline for 8. RDE pushing both Pitts and McKinney into Carr as ball is thrown. Positive play.
6:35 3rd & 2 3 WR (2 R and then Gaff motion L to R), TE-R. 3 step drop-6:34 Carr overthrows Gaff at left sideline. Predominant fault Carr.
:37 1st & 10 3 WR-2R, TE-R. 5 step drop--:36 ball intended for Morency who has released thru DL about 2 yds is knocked down by Stroud. Carr’s delivery not pronounced sidearm-basically good play Stroud. Pitts, McKinney & Hodg do a very good job. Wade & Brown both getting bull rushed into Carr’s face. Predominant fault Brown.
2nd QTR
15:00 3rd & 8 3 WR-2R, Wells & Morency, shotgun. 14:57 Carr, after what appears to be two prior reads, dumps to Wells for 1st down. Pitts dominates RDE solo. Rest of DL is driven to the right. Good protection. Positive play.
14:18 1st & 10 2 WR, 2 TE. Designed roll right-14:16 out to AJ for 1st down. Only receiver on that side of the field, obvious 1st read. Positive play.
13:50 1st & 10 2 WR, 2 TE. Designed roll right. Bruener tries to seal LDE but slips off so releases as receiving option. LDE is then in instant pursuit of Carr. Carr jukes him and gains 2. Predominant fault Bruener.
13:09 2nd & 8 4 WR-3 L. 3 step drop-13:07 ball out to AJ left for 1st down. Wade is on ground at release. Brown and Stroud just looking at each other. Pitts pounds RDE into McKinney. Henderson stunting around end unaccounted for. Positive play.
11:13 2nd & 8 3 WR-2R (Bradford then motions so all 3 R), TE-L. 5 step drop-Carr looks right, pumps, then 11:11 dumps to Morency for -1 yds. Wade is slow off the the snap and recovers by getting away with a blatant hold around the neck of the LDE.
10:30 3rd & 9 4 WR. 5 step drop-10:28 ball out to Bradford right sideline for TD. Positive play.
8:03 1st & 10 3 WR-2L, TE-R. 5 step drop-after checking left side of field Carr dumps to Wells at 8:01 for 5 yds. This time right side of OL does well with Bruener handling LDE & Brown on Stroud. McKinney and Pitts double up. As ball is thrown, Hodg and Henderson are falling into Carr’s feet. Positive play.
6:51 1st & 10 3 WR-2R, TE-R. 5 step drop-Carr checking R when LB comes between Brown & Hodg (Hodg is making a noble effort of laying on the ground trying to grab his foot in passing) unimpeded so Carr dumps to Morency at 6:49 who drops ball. Predominant fault-Brown & Hodg.
[In between passing plays Hodg is hurt. At this point Carr was 9 of 13 for 104 yds, 1 TD and 0 sacks]
6:47 2nd & 10 3 WR-2R, TE-R. 3 step drop-Carr loses ball attempting to stop passing motion at 6:46. Brown whiffs on Stroud who then rag dolls Wells. No clear fault-Carr lost ball, but would have been whacked if held onto it-Carr 50%/Brown 50%.
6:39 3rd & 10 3 WR-2R, Wells & Morency, shotgun. 2 seconds Carr is sacked. 4 steps back from shotgun. Wand is following RDE straight to that spot. Morency gets fun over by Wand backing up (how do you not see a 330lb butt coming at you?) and is therefore off balance and so doesn’t slow down blitzing LB between Wand and Pitts. Pitts gives Henderson nothing. Brown and Wade are both abused. Carr tries to move forward to give Wand room but is hit from left by LB and right by Wade’s LDE. Predominate fault OL with a contributing effort by RB.
3:00 2nd & 8 3 WR-2R, TE-R. 5 step drop-Carr looks right, pumps. Wand, Pitts, McKinney have Henderson and RDE very well. Brown and Wade both look solid for 2 seconds and then as if on prearranged cue release Stroud and LDE to Carr. Wells has released thru the line to right side. Carr--slides just shy of LOS for sack as safety comes up. Carr is predominately responsible for it being recorded as a sack, but OL is predominately responsible for it being a failed play (-1 yds vs. 0 yds on play made zero difference in game-failed play could have made a difference).
2:21 3rd & 10 3 WR-2R, Wells and Morency, shotgun. 2:20 ball out incomplete to Bradford left side. Looks like Carr either threw the ball away or expected Bradford cutting harder because if ball is thrown directly to where Bradford actually is it is an almost sure INT-welcome other interpretations. Brown and Wells handle stunting Stroud and LDE. Morency looks like he steps out of the way of a stunting Henderson. Wand way slow to pick up LB blitz. Predominate fault Carr/Bradford.
3rd QTR
12:44 1st & 10 4 WR. 3 step drop-12:43 ball out to Bradford on right sideline for 9 yds. Positive play.
11:26 1st & 10 3 WR-2L, TE-R. 5 step drop-Carr looking at left half of field and then dumps to Wells in left flat at 11:24. Rivers and Wade can’t handle LDE-fumble the exchange. Positive play.
10:47 2nd & 6 3 WR-2L, TE-R. 5 step drop-Carr isn’t finished with drop before protection has blown up. Wand actually holds firm solo. Wells picks up safety. Brown is abused-lets Stroud get to Carr’s drop spot and then yanks his arm out of the socket to put him on the ground (yes draws flag). Carr steps up to avoid Stroud buy Henderson is able to move inside Pitts and McKinney and pocket is gone. Carr moves right and is sacked by RDE who has come around back of DL after having been stood up by Wand. Carr should have thrown ball away but if had, holding penalty would have been accepted (2nd & 16 vs. 3rd & 11). Predominant failure of play on OL-Carr at fault for sack in stats by not throwing ball away.
10:19 3rd & 11 4 WR. 5 step drop-Wand allows RDE to meet LB blitzer who gets by whiffing Wells at Carr’s drop spot. Carr has nowhere to step into because Brown has let Stroud straight thru. Sack and fumble. Predominant fault OL.
8:03 2nd & 8 3 WR-2L, TE-R. Play fake-8:01 ball out to Bradford left sideline 1st down. Pass protection good but in part because blitz LB and RDE trip each other in front of Wand and Morency. Positive play.
7:38 1st & 10 3 WR-2L, TE-R. 5 step drop-7:36 left sideline pass to Bradford for 7. Wand is beat on inside move-on ground at release so Carr’s time was up. Positive play.
6:37 3rd & 1 3 WR (wide L, slot R and motion R, TE-R). Play fake, designed roll right-6:35 ball out to Gaff for 1st down. Rivers provides almost no impediment to LDE. Positive play.
6:10 1st & 10 2 WR, 2 TE. Designed roll left-6:08 ball out to AJ on left sideline. Good job by OL. Positive play.
2:31 2nd & 9 3 WR-2R (AJ motions R so 3 R), TE-L (finally-hello, the unpracticed guy you didn’t think was good enough to put on pads is struggling-how about giving some help) Designed roll right-2:29 ball out to AJ behind LOS. Rivers falls on ground in front of RDE who is then backed into by Morency. No one picks up CB blitz so he is hitting Carr at release. Predominate fault pass protection.
1:48 3rd & 9 3 WR-2L, TE-R. Designed roll right-1:46 ball out to AJ on right sideline-ends up just short of 1st down. Pass protection OK except for Rivers getting juked to the ground by safety who ends up right in Carr’s face at release. Positive play.
4th QTR
10:42 1st & 10 3 WR-2L, TE-R. 5 step drop-Carr looks downfield and then 10:40 dumps to Wells in left flat. As McKinney is trailing Henderson around back of DL it causes Wand to come off double team on RDE to assist McKinney. This leaves Pitts unbalanced and lets RDE free outside Pitts. Predominant fault OL protection.
9:23 1st & 10 3 WR-2L, TE-R. 5 step drop-9:21 ball out intended for AJ. Either poorly thrown or IMO morel likely miscommunication with Carr expecting AJ to break to sideline and AJ continuing up field. Predominant fault Carr & AJ.
8:40 3rd & 9 3 WR-2R, Wells and Morency, shotgun. Morency barely impedes LB blitzing blind side. Brown allows Stroud virtually open access to Carr. No pocket to step into, Carr scrambles right for 6. Predominant fault Brown. [As an aside, folks need to remember that once the QB leaves the pocket, the no contact rules on WRs are gone so savvy DB’s will molest them and reduce a scrambling QB’s options]
2:46 1st & 10 3 WR-2R, TE-R. 5 step drop-Carr is going to throw at 2:44 but ball is knocked out from behind by RDE who has speed rushed around Wand. Bruener promptly recovers the ball because he is laying on the ground after having been abused by LDE. Predominant fault Wand.
2:12 2nd & 14 4 WR, shotgun. 2:10 ball is out to Bradford on right sideline. Safety blitzes smoothly by unoccupied Wand. Stroud has advantage of Brown again. Positive play.
2:00 3rd & 10 4 WR-3L, shotgun. 1:58 ball out to AJ for 1st on crossing route. Good pass protection. Carr throws ball exactly where it has to be to avoid pass break up. Positive play.
1:53 1st & 10 4 WR-3L, shotgun. 1:15 same play. Positive play.
1:27 1st & 10 4 WR, shotgun. 1:24 ball incomplete to AJ. Not a poorly thrown ball-miscommunication between Carr and AJ-ball lands 4 yds from sideline inbounds. Very good pass protection. Predominant fault Carr/AJ. [Update--AJ said he knocked off on the route so fault AJ]
1:21 2nd & 10 4 WR-3L, shotgun. 1:20 ball out to Armstrong left sideline for 6. Positive play.
1:11 3rd & 4 4 WR, shotgun. Wand does an excellent job. Wade and Wells allow LDE and LB in virtually unmolested. Carr trusted OL too much-moved forward to give Wade and Wells room to work and then gets hit from behind. Predominant fault Wade & Wells.
:54 4th & 9 4 WR-3R, shotgun. :52 the ball is out, incomplete to Bradford. Pass protection good. Bradford is very open-hardly qualifies as double coverage as Deion Grant is so far away from play. Carr looks AJ 1st-at the time of the look, one Jag has hand on AJ and they are moving right to left approaching a LB. Carr then looks to Bradford and throws. AJ comes open after Carr’s head turns to Bradford. Looks like AJ comes open as the two Jags tangle on each other a little. Predominant fault Bradford.
38 total attempted plays. 18 positive plays. Of the non-positive plays, I would grade it (I have used halves in some places to get these totals)--Carr 3, WR 2.5, Pass protection 12.5.
1st QTR
14:18 2nd & 8 3 WR-2R, TE-R. 5 step drop-Carr checks Bradford left then 14:15 throws to Wells to the R. Protection good. Positive play-defined as successful for one of the designed options.
