It is becoming more and more obvious that the "powers that be" in LA do not care if they have the NFL or not. :deadhorse
Was the competition between Houston and LA for a franchise just a ploy by the NFL to bleed every dollar from McNair. It seems now that the Rose Bowl does not want to accomodate the league. The only way it seems the league will ever get in LA is to buy the land, build the stadium, and guarantee a winning record for the team every year so as to get fans to attend.

People in LA have been working on multiple potential deals for an NFL franchise for the last 5 yrs since the Texans got their start. A bit long to be carrying on the subterfuge.
 
Really strange! With all the money they have in LA, and as much as the Hollywoodites LOVE to use sporting events to impower themselves, you would think they would come up with a solution. Maybe they need to chat with Oprah! :)
 
I don't think he was snookered.... to be as wealthy as he is, I doubt it's possible anyway. I think it was more the NFL just gave LA every chance and extend it as long as they could to see if there was a glimmer of thought process the LA-ites were putting something together.

LA could never get it together, McNair was ready, and the NFL ran out of time. By the way, thanks again Bob McNair!!!

San Antonio doesn't enough corporate dollars to get a team to move there. Benson will use SA as leverage to get what he wants from New Orleans and the state of Louisiana, but when push comes to shove I don' think San Antonio will be able to match what he is getting right now in New Orleans. Also, I don't know if Benson wants to be as much a rebel as Davis and move without the approval of the league.

Los Angeles is probably the only place an NFL team could move to.
 
personally i don't see a team moving to L.A. working out...i think they will need they're own team and sometimes it looks like they don't want a team other than the raiders...but only if the raiders are gonna get to the playoffs every year...this is why many of us believe it would be better if L.A. kinda just fell off the into the ocean...haha...jk but seriously L.A. should be an easy town to make a team work in with as much people as they have...i don't understand why it never does

The LA franchise is likely another 5-10 years away from fruition. The simple fact is a team really does not want to move to LA because even though the city has tons of money they are like us and very proud. Like many on the board have said they will have to start their own franchise and put it in a place that is easier to get to than the Rose Bowl. Bottomline anyone traveling in LA during peak hours is gonna sit in traffic and to sit in hours of traffic to watch a team that is gonna suck for 3 or more years does not appeal to the LA-ites.

The simplest plan is for some rich guy to buy the land, go to the NFL and say he wants to be majority owner of the team and they start one. I recomend heading up toward Malibu and Calabassas Hills in order to avoid traffic or make it part of the Watts or Compton rebuilding process (doubt it though). Then they will have their precious franchise and another team for the Texans to stomp...
 
No, because the NFL is desperate to have NFL in LA. That's why they still continued pursuing LA the second they awarded the franchise to Houston. It's just that LA isn't that interested. If they were, they wouldn't have lost two teams in recent years and they would have been awarded Franchise #32.

The problem is this: LA just does not want a football team. They had the Raiders and Rams and neither team drew very well. In fact a buddy of mine in LA believes LA is a baseball/fbasketball town becuase of the Star power factor. Kobe/Shaq and the Lakers are star powered. Gagne/the Dodgers are star powered just like Vlad Guerreo/ The Angels are tyring to be. LA just does not like football.

During my MBA days at U of T @ SA, we had a class that looked at a possible NFL team moving to SA. Bottomline, market didn't support it at that time (1995). However, its been 10 years and the growth in SA, coupled with potential to involve Austin make it a better business case. However, still a long shot.

I don't know how familar you are with the geograghy of the LA area but Calabassas Hills would be a nightmare drive for most of the people in the area. It is way way way too far away from Orange County and the Inland Empire which is where a huge amount of fans would come from. I live in Long Beach which is in LA county and I am 60 miles from Calabassas. Imagine if they decided to put the Texans Stadium in Galveston and you lived in The Woodlands or Kingwood. It wouldn't be fun.

Anaheim <- That is where the stadium should be. Easy sunday drive for every one.

LA wants an NFL team. Trust me. On sunday mornings the Sports bars are jammed packed with NFL fans. A new team would have to compete with the fan base of the Raiders and the Rams but they would do just fine.
 
I agree, there is a big NFL fan base there. It's just like the national perception Houston had a few years back when we lost our team. People just assumed Houston was a bad football town across America, and the perception finally started to end when Bob McNair stepped up large (thanks again Bob). I used to live in LA (Rancho Cucamonga) when both the Raider and Rams were there.

There is some difference between Houston and LA though. Houston is in Texas where Football is King. there are some towns in Texas whose major form of entertainment is friday night highschool football. While highschool football is big in Cali, I dotn think it is on the same level as it is in Texas. In Texas Football is THE sport and baseball occupies the second fav sport among most. In California Baseball or baseletball is the sport. It is really a different culture. And there is nothign wrong with difference.

Don't tell USC that. They've had such a rough few years! They can't win a thing and can't recruit any good players because football just isn't important in California....

California is a giant state. You think it is tough to find a handful of good football players in that group? Granted that they are competing against several other schools, but right now the place to go is USC.

I still stand by my previous statement. Highschool football is the highlight of the week in some Texas towns. Books have been written and movies have been made about how important highschool football is in Texas, not California.
 
The main problem Los Angeles has is the public funding of a new stadium. California is a tough place to pass any kind of vote on public financing of anything.
 
That's not absurd when it’s real. I lived outside of Texas at the time (lots of travelling) and Cleveland was held high as a city that backs its team and Houston was pointed at as a city that 'deserved' to lose our team in many, many circles. I don't know where you were at the time, I saw it everywhere and tons of ill-informed people could only point to that failed pep-rally nobody attended here and characterized our fans much like people are characterizing the LA market now.

Vinny has already disagreed with this statement, but I'll chime in anyways. There WAS a national perception that Houston was a bad football town.
 
I just want to say that I never said it was something that felt was justified. There was quite a bit of unfair National talk pointing at the last couple of lame duck years when we all knew they were leaving and didn’t want to support Bud. I just wanted to point out that there is the same kind of finger pointing at the LA market. I don't think that some of it justified, like in our case.
 
San Antonio coupled with the Austin market may well be a viable and even good place to put an NFL franchise. LA and San Antonio are the only two towns in the top 10 US cities in terms of population not to have an NFL team. Couple in Austin, and the said possible fan base grows significantly.

San Antonio may not be the home to scores of Fortune 500 companies, but they and Austin do indeed have some. New Orleans has none, zero, zippo, zilch Fortune 500 companies.

San Antonio for the longest time has been a town driven by the military presence there. In the last ten years the growth there and in Austin has been exponential and very well could be a good place for a team.

Name another city aside from LA that would be a better place to put an NFL franchise. I'm having a hard time thinking of one. Maybe Toronto.

San Antonio would make a good football town, but if you look at Metro Area population, Portland and Las Vegas are both bigger. There's also Norfolk-Virginia Beach, and Birmingham among others that are also deserving.

I'm not saying S.A. shouldn't get a team, but there is quite a bit of competition.
