both got new contracts. and both are looking old so far this year. if these guys dont step it up its going to kill our cap space in the next couple of years. we have to have them play solid football for at least 3 more years so we can start improving other positions, with the draft. hopefully we can get some line help on both sides of the ball in the next couple of years. we have skill position players but we got to get some guys in the trenches to give these guys some time.

I don't think Walker has 3 years left of good football. I don't know how that all works though regarding the salary cap.

walker and glenn both got a signing bonus, not sure how much. if i remember correctly it was a good portion of their contracts. signing bonus's are paid up front but usually the money is split up evenly and count against the cap yearly for the life of the contract. example 10 dollar signing bonus for 5 years counts 2 dollars per year.

now if that player is not playing up to expectations or even if hes cut that money still counts against you. plus the money it takes to replace that player.

Somebody correct me (Vinny...little help here) but I thought that both of those guys had at least one potentially voidable year in their contracts.

As concious as Casserly is of a player passing the 30yr old mark I would be surprised if they didn't have some "out clauses" built into their contracts, particularly Walker.

aj is the best guy to answer this one I think. He is the most knowledgable member when it comes to the cap. I would have to do some digging and will if nobody comes up with a good answer.

Glenn has is under contract until 2007. The salaries for the final 3 years of his contract are:

2005 - $4 million
2006 - $4.25 million
2007 - $5.5 million

Glenn will still have $4.2 million of his $7 million bonus to count against the cap. The Texans could spread that amount over 2 years, but the total difference against the cap would only be $200K if they took the entire hit in ’05.

Walker signed a $37 million 6 year deal this off season with an $11 million signing bonus. Gary will still have over $9 million of bonus counting against the cap after this season. The earliest he could probably be released would be prior to the ’07 season where what would be left on his bonus ($5.5 mil) would be close to his salary ($5.2 mil).
Walker’s remaining yearly salaries:

2005 - $2.2 million
2006 - $4 million
2007 - $5.2 million
2008 - $6.4 million
2009 - $7.6 million

Having said that, I’m not anywhere ready to give up on these guys. Glenn will look much better when he gets a pass rush in front of him. Walker is going to be here through ’06. We can’t give up on him. If the Texans can find future replacements in the next draft, Glenn & Walker will be able play fewer snaps and hopefully extend their career.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Texans draft a D-lineman, linebacker, or maybe even a safety in the first round.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they draft a corner in the second round.

I am thinking CB in the first, D-lineman 2nd and a safety 3rd.

Need to get another hot corner in to train before AG is in a wheelchair.

we need an offensivelineman in the first round, plain and simple. our defense has 3 rookies starting they will get better.

We need to see what the rest of the season holds for us, injuries, record, rookies play, whos actually going to be in the draft, etc... before we talk about what we are going to go for in the draft. If we dont win another game we will draft Mike Williams with the first pick. If we make the playoffs we will go for best player available. There is still too much football to be played to be talking about who we are going to draft.
