Vinny, Aj.. or whoever watches the games closer than I

I admit I am glued to Carr after the ball is hiked.. Seems yall are ones that see more of the field than I do.. But my question is what is our game plan with our TE's on passing downs?
Miller has 7 catches for the season
Bruenner has 3 catches

To me that is alarming because I believe most teams that are good have a good TE to be the QB's security blanket so to speak. We seem to go to DD as our security blanket.

Is our OL that bad that we have to keep the TE's to help blocking? or are they just not able to get open?

i dont know as much as some of those guys but i did see bruener drop one. beside that i think you partly answered your own ?. i would bet they have to stay in and help the ol a lot. plus the fact that we dont have a complete te one that can block and catch. im sure when miller is in the game they know to cover him.

I am hoping Joppru gets healthy.. We need a TE to help keep teams from consistantly bringing a Cover 2 on us.. We need someone in the seam

I agree with the two reasons mentioned above, but I also think that the drops by the TEs may cause Carr to lose some confidence in throwing to the TE unless he's wide open. You'd think that Miller would be able to get open with teams rolling coverage over to AJ's side of the field. Then again I've seen Carr audible to a run when he's got the two TE package in pretty frequently. Let's just hope we'll get to see BJ out on the field pretty soon.

well bruener is one of the best blocking TEs in the league, which can be an improtant part of an offense. but i thought billy miller was gonna have a huge year this year with the emergance of andre, i geuss i was wrong

I am assuming you are a colts fan (forgive me if I am wrong), but we see what a good TE does for a team.. When Manning got Dallas Clark .. that really helped that offense (like they needed it)

haha, yeah i wasnt thrilled with the dallas clark pick at first, but then i realized when you have someone like peyton, why not give him as many options as possible. but i think a TE can be the most important part of an offense. guys like crumpler, gonzo, gates, and toa degree marcus pollard cant be defended against. i know you guys need o-line help, but if you could get heath miller from virginia in the draft, you would see david carr start to become the QB he can be. most of the best qbs had a good TE: Elway-Sharpe, Kosar-Newsome, Fouts-Winslow, Mcnair-Wycheck, Bledsoe-Coates.

i just think an impact TE would do you wonders

Kosar??????????????

I heard Capers on the radio a while back - he said the short outlet pass to DD was taking the place of the short pass to the TE. When your goal is a 50/50 split between run/pass, you have only so many touches to go around. This year Dominic is the favored receiver.

Things can be deceiving, but go back to the next to last offensive play(2:19) of the game (our last play was a punt). This was when the blocking of Wade & Weigert broke down & Carr was forced to his right, then heaved an incompletion. On the sky cam replay, I thought that there sure was a lot of empty space up the middle for a TE route - one on one with the LB.

The o-line is certainly having its' problems this season, but the main reason is Dominic Davis. Most teams do not have a dependable #1 back who can catch the ball out of the backfield. Fred Taylor, Edgerin James, Barber, exceptions! 75% of the teams bring out a "3rd" down back, giving the defense the tip of, "we're going to throw". But with Davis, along with the others mentioned, the Texans feel they have a option run, or pass, leaving a extra blocking TE in the game. This has been the main reason for the loss of the TE in our offense. Occassionally you will see some designed plays for Miller or Bruener, but this line has been so banged up and inconsistent, why get your Franchise QB killed. :hmmm:

I really don't know but it's possible that the poor performance of the OL has something to do with how the TE is being utilized. We all know Miller isn't much of a blocker and Breuner isn't much of a receiver..and who knows what Joppru will be if anything. But I don't think we're going to see the second coming of Wesley Walls in this offense any time soon with all the talent at WR and the philosophy of getting a RB at least 25 touches a game. I really wasn't focusing on the TEs Sunday night (except for Bruener's drop). I'll try and pay more attention on Sunday.

When Joppru was re-injured we pretty much chunked our two TE sets because all we had left were incomplete TE's. We went to a 3 wr set because Armstrong and Gaffney are better in routes than Miller or Bruenner so they get the slot looks. Miller hurts the team as much as he helps it with his handful of receptions because he is a lousy blocker. Bruenner is a glorified Tackle really, but he has been inconsistent himself. I've seen him whiff on some key blocks this year.

The Chiefs, Patriots, Colts have all used high picks on TE's the last few years. It would not surprise me to see us take another one on the first day next year. Much of that will depend of Joppru (my avatar)

If Joppru is unable to go, they might even pick one in the first round (doubtfull though). Is there anyone that would warrent it?

Heath Miller, 6-5, 255, Virginia
Matt Herian, 6-5, 240, Nebraska
Kevin Everett, 6-5, 250, Miami

Those are the best TE's in the Nation. I'm not sure if Miller comes out though. He is the best of that bunch.

thanks, I see what you are saying and agree.. we need a TE

They still run the two TE set (two WR - single setback), but not as much as last year. It's more of a situational formation now - deep in our end, redzone, etc.

Vinny, any of those guys worth burning a 1st on? Who slips to the 2nd and would that be a better play?

Heath Miller - Elite pass catcher, likely first round pick
Matt Herian - Has a game a bit like the Colts Dallas Clark. Second round I think.
Kevin Everett - Daniel Graham-like. Second rounder likely

Based on your input and my preference to snag a good CB with the first pick (age and mileage on Glenn), it looks like Herian might be the best one for us with the 2nd. If he is like Clark, that isn't to shabby.

Matt Herian broke his left leg last month in the Missouri game. He's likely to return to Nebraska for his Senior season. He's not going to be able to train for the combine or pro days with a rod in his leg.
