Vernon Davis runs 4.38 at the Combine

Mayock on NFL is saying possible top 7.

6'3" 250+, good balocker, great hands (real good gauntlet drill) then a 4.38 forty.

I had Vernon Davis on my soul-10 NCAA fantasy team in 2004. He's going to be the player Winslow was supposed to be. He's Kellen without the brain damage.

He was never projected toward the second. He was projected at #7-mid 20's the whole time with a projected 40 of 4.4/4.5. With an official 4.38 I don't see him dropping past 12.
 
Thats insane, the guys like 6'3" 250lbs and has a 40" vertical. That is just crazy athleticism. Not to mention he is a strong as a ox.
 
Add to teh forty a 10' 8" broad jump and a 42" vertical leap. :superman: :superman: :superman:

This guy is just going off at the combine, and whats even more scary is that he is not a workout warrior. Davis = a TD 95% of teh time in teh red zone.

He may rapidly be becoming the safest pick in the draft.

athleticism doesnt always = production.


thats a problem with the combine.
 
Yo considering taking reggie bush, we will have the 1st choice of the second round, so do u think he will be there at the beginning of the second round, if so should we take him or trade him for a later draft pick.

I've never heard that about Davis. He holds several lifting records at Maryland.

Well said. One of the pieces of the puzzle to beat "cover 2" is to attack the middle of the field with a TE mismatch...and AJ + VD = defensive coordinator nightmares. That move would make the OL, AJ, and DC better simultaneously IMO...now if we can just get the right trading partner (top 10)willing to throw in an All Pro defensive end to swap places (Jets???) we are really getting somewhere. :stirpot:
 
So many options at the top of this draft .... Much better than last years crop of talent ..... Glad im not going to have to make a decision on any of these kids .

Latest rumor Ive heard is a trade down w/ the Raiders ..... I'd take him at 7 with Bush , Young , D-Brick , Hawk , Williams and Leinart all gone.
 
This guy sounds like Andre Johnson, but 25 lbs bigger. With his size but
also speed, seems like he'd be more valuable to a team at WR. I mean TEs
are important, but WRs tend to be more important so don't know if
you'd really want to waste him on run blocking ? And can you imagine the
matchup problems for the D, 250 lb WR vs 180 lb CB and the WR just as fast
as the corner !
 
I have been on the D'Brick or Williams bandwagon, but now i am on the V. Davis wagon that would be awsome to have this guy if we trade with the jets and get abraham. he was interviewing on the nfl network and he seems like a hard working man with a team attitude. he said that he likes to block so tha would be awsome. they said he also has a 42 inch verticle, and has the record for tightends at maryland in the bench at 465lbs.

i think we take him because it will also help our line. and he is a reciveing threat.

If we trade down w/oakland we take him. We take him unless D'brick is available.
 
This would be a great choice if we trade with Oakland. Also, if we trade down all the way to 7, we will have to get something like a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and a 1st next year. This could allow us to either stock op on talent, or trade back up ain the first and get Winston Justice/Eric Winston to help the line. Ahh, the possibilities are endless.

33 reps, a TE record and more than many (most?) of the o-lineman. As tantalizing as he sounds, I would rather not trade that far down and pick up D-Brick or Mario instead.
 
IMO the Raiders will have just as high if not even higher first round pick next year because they will still have one of the worst if not the worst defenses in the league.
 
Wow, what a time.

So he could go to SF at 7 (give ASmith a good outlet), Detroit at 9 (why not add another receiver - fits their mentality), or AZ at 10 (they need a TE period - give me chills thinking about him with Boldin and Fitz). He won't get past the Rams at 11 (projected to take him in a lot of mocks before this news - their new offense needs a TE).

1-3 Bush/VY/Lienert
4-5 D'Brick/Mario
6 Hawk
7 Davis

So far, it looks like only Lendale White (green bay rumors) and Cutler (which i doubt) affect the first 6 picks. If we slid to 7, I wouldn't mind having him as our TE for the next 12 years.

I don't see SF paying the price to move to #1. But, if we could deal down with Tenn (if they decided they had to have either VY or Lienert), and Bush slid to #3, then it could work.

I would love this scenario (leaving us with 3 high #1s next year - I like Bush but Adrian Peterson is going to be better)
tenn: #1 for #3 and #1 in 2007
SF: #3 for #7 and #1 in 2007
(maybe we also swap a 3rd for a 2nd this year in each of these)

But more likely scenario:
tenn: #1 for #3, #35 and a 2nd next year.
SF: #3 for #7, #39 and a 2nd next year.
At least with this one we would clean up at the top of the 2nd round.
 
If we have to trade down too far and miss D'Brick and Super Mario, this is our guy. I always thought Oakland to be our most likely trade partner.
 
Vernon Davis is an absouloute beast. I was watching NFL Network, and saw his 40 as well as his bench press. The guy is strong as an ox, as fast as lightening, and is an amazing athlete. I think he did around 33 reps at 225, ran the 40 in 4.38. He is everything Kellen was supposed to be, and more. Kellen was never thought of as a great blocker. This guy potentially can block as well as an offensive lineman, and be a faster version of a Shannon Sharpe/ Gonzalez style TE. In short, he is a pro-bowler in waiting imo. He has jumped into my super elite non-qb picks - Bush, Brick, M Williams, Hawk, and now Davis. All of these guys have star written all over them, and I would be happy with any of them.
 
i live in MD and im a terps fan. i watched all of their games. this guy is the most amazing physical speciman i have ever seen.

he is crazy. along with that speed, he carries defenders. he NEVER goes down on the first hit.

I think V. Davis might have the same net effect on Carr that Bush or D'Brickashaw would. He's gonna make life so much tougher for LBs and give Carr a nice outlet. The speed is great, but his ability to take a hit and keep on trucking is huge for all the dumpoffs TE's can get. I just don't know how you pack that type of athleticism into that frame. You'd think he might be able to do some short yardage work with that size, speed, strength combo. Can you say Christian Okoye?

Officially, I am a draft Vince guy, but I think V-Davis has planted himself firmly after the Big 3 and may be in front of D'Brickashaw. Other than VY, he is the guy I would be most pleased to see in battle red.
 
V-Davis does more for us than Bush, DBrick or Young IMO...this guy is a key piece to the beating "the cover 2" equation. As a plus he is a punishing blocker and will help improve our red zone TD conversion percentage.

That is a lot of value from a move that probably also comes with some terrific extra picks. He is the only guy in the draft that I won't be disappointed to see us go for instead of DBrick or Mario. :stirpot:

What I meant was relative to TE's, he is a high end blocker (very willing and capable) IMO and I would say he shows a mean streak when blocking downfield on smaller defensive players which is almost everyone he is up against. I agree that he is not "punishing" compared to a Tackle or Guard of course.

IMO, even as a blocker, he is better than any TE we have on the roster including Bruener who will make $1M this year to just block for us (if we don't cut him).

hes not in the same zip code with bruener as far as blocking goes.


he needs lots of work on technique and positioning, hes an extremely raw blocker.
 
Davis takes poor angles to his blocks. He also will turn his body too much one way, allowing the DE to change directions easily. He is not a top end blocker for TE's, but he is not bad.

1) Won't last past Rams at 11

rb is the most solid position we have. the only reason why we would take a rb in this draft is if it is reggie bush. how bout an olineman

Vernon Davis is a GROWN MAN in a daycare! Unbelievable! Early on I was kinda hoping he would just be quiet ...and we could pick him up in the 2nd or 3rd ...so much for that.

We could REALLY use a tight end like that guy!

My problem ...I'm ready to move on to a new QB ...I think Carr should have been shipped out with the coaching staff ...still no knock on him ...he was really a great ambassodor for the city of Houston ...a class act! But I can just see it now ...the first time he throws an incomplete pass ...I'M GONNA BE ALL OVER HIM ...VINCE YOUNG NEVER THROWS INCOMPLETE PASSES!!!!
 
vernon "the duke" davis is probably one of the best athletes in this years draft...right up there with bush, hawk, mario williams, and ferguson...the hid is an absolute stud...i saw him play against nc state this year and he held his own against mario so he has the strength to be a good blocker and he definetly is everything you want in a pass-catching TE except the heigth...but he has like a 40" vertical leap so there goes the height thing
 
He's a beast, if we trade down and cant get Mario, or D'Brick. This is the dude. Him and Andre would tear Defenses up (If Carr has time to throw). That speed is insane for a guy that big, I'm in awe.

I disagree with your first statement but agree with your second. IMO, 3 things go into having a good blocking TE (1) Size and Strength-Davis has it (2) Willingness-Davis has it (3) Technique-that is what the new coaching staff is for

Also, he showed improvement last year as a blocker so I would add that the kid is not just a weight room wonder ... he brings a "how do I get better" to the field as well.

Bottomline, I did not see much of a fall off last year when Bruener was not in the game IMO.
