UT upsets # 10 Notre Dame!

Two over times 50-47 in a very entertaining games. ND LT was not impressive but DT Isaac Rochelle was and moves to my focus group. This game had freshman QB for Texas looking great and throwing like a season vet.

I couldn't have been more impressed with the Longhorn true freshman QB. At no point did he look like the moment might be too big for him.
Starting his first collegiate game, in prime time, against a #10 team that Texas hadn't beaten in decades (iirc).
He played every bit like a senior 2-3 year starter.

Multiple lead-changes, multiple comebacks, multiple overtimes, and a tying score that was a blocked-and-returned extra point. There won't be a game as entertaining and crazy as this one for a good long while. I'm so glad I watched it.

Yeah, I haven't been that up and into a UT game like that in a long time. It's great seeing us finally having a promising QB. The man just has that "I've got this" look in his face. I haven't seen that in years.

Vertical passing game and a healthy stable of big running backs were on display, felt like Texas again. Looking forward to the progression of the offensive attack, but also the maturation of the defense, specifically an able pass rush.

I just saw the new AP rankings and am shocked that UT went from not ranked in the top 25 to #11. That's a bit of a stretch after one game.

That freshman QB impressed a lot of people

Yeah, he impressed the heck out of me too. Also I wasn't a fan of them doing the 2 QB system (because as we all know that rarely turns out well), however the way they did it was very effective. I think it also takes some pressure off of the freshman (though he seems to eat up pressure).

BTW, the kid just seems to pull through, like being born despite the fact that his father had a vasectomy :).

The two QB system doesn't ever work. I don't like what they're trying to do.

The minute Swoopes goes into the game it is obvious what is going to happen. It will eventually not work out well. What I don't get is why they don't just put in Swoopes as a RB from now on.

I would say it worked Sunday night. Now, should they keep doing it all season? That's another discussion.

Well of course it did. No one would argue that. The simple minded will look at that though, and talk as if it was some sort of brilliance. It wasn't. It just went well that night, but college coaches are always pulling this crap, and it always bites them in the ass down the road. Maybe they didn't want to put it all on the shoulders of the new Freshman and it helped. I don't know. I just know that I've seen this act time and time again, and it just doesn't ever work and allow the offenses to get into a good pattern where they're in sync when you have two QB's having to time the receivers and learn their tendencies. Of couse Swoopes only runs it seems like so that tells the other team that its either a QB sneak or a run play from the zone read most likely. I like watching Swoopes run just like the next guy, don't get me wrong. Make him a RB. He can run. I just hate play packages where the defense automatically knows what your offense is going to do. It defies creative offensive strategy. The whole "here try and stop us" plan only works for so long. You know the saying "if you have two QB's, then you have none."

Generally I would agree with you, but Urban Meyer and the Gators made the Leak/Tebow combo work all the way to the National Championship.

Alright you got me there. I forgot about that one season. Tebow threw the ball though. It isn't exactly the same as Swoopes running it every time, but I'll say that is a good example that presents a season where you could make an argument. I'll still stick to my stance either way, because exceptions are rare and in that instance it is extremely rare. It usually turns into a very bad strategy down the road.

I thought it was brilliant to get Swoopes involved. It kept some of the pressure off the freshman and they never put either player in a position where they would be out of their comfort zone.

Now, this is basically a glorified wildcat formation. Can you lean on it all year? No, I doubt it. I wouldn't show it at all against UTEP. I'd work on some new wrinkles for Cal, Okie St, and OU. But as the year goes on it should be used less and less as more responsibility is transferred to Buechele.

There is always an exception to the rule and it's just that, an Exception, it's not the rule.

The good news is Texas now has a high powered, high octane offense with Sterlin Gilbert as their OC. The bad news is he will be the Baylor Bears head coach next year.

I guess Kendall Briles will replace Gilbert
