Florida freshman quarterback Treon Harris has been suspended while local police investigate an accusation of sexual assault against him, the school announced Monday.
The suspension comes only two days after Harris led the Gators to a 10-9 come-from-behind win at Tennessee.
"We have no tolerance for sexual assault on our campus," Florida president Bernie Machen said in the statement. "The university is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for every member of the UF community. We must strive to protect all of our students from sexual harassment and assault, and do everything in our power to promote a safe learning environment."
The announcement specified that "the investigation is ongoing and we do not have an update regarding any charges at this time." The University of Florida Police Department is conducting the investigation with assistance from the Gainesville Police Department, which is helping collect the necessary forensic evidence.
The alleged assault took place "early Sunday morning" in a school residence hall.
Harris has been suspended from "all team activities."
Harris's attorney, Huntley Johnson, told the Orlando Sentinel that his client would cooperate with the investigation, adding that "he has not been arrested and I don't expect him to be."
Will Muschamp's regular Monday press conference was postponed.
A true freshman out of Miami's Booker T. Washington High School, Harris was rated a four-star recruit in the Gators' class of 2014. Against the Vols, Harris came on in second-half relief of starter Jeff Driskel, completing 2 of 4 passes for 17 yards and rushing for 24 more yards, as he keyed the Gators' only two scoring drives of the game.
Florida came back from a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit to top Tennessee 10-9.
Harris had been a candidate to start the Gators' upcoming game against LSU on Saturday evening. Muschamp was also considering splitting snaps between his two signal callers.
