Unhappy Mario Williams may be done in Buffalo

Twice this season, Buffalo Bills defensive endMario Williams has publicly criticized the defensive scheme of head coach Rex Ryan, and specifically his role in it. Last season, Williams picked up 14.5 sacks and a first team All-Pro spot under former coordinator Jim Schwartz. This year, he has four sacks and doesn't seem to fit what Ryan and his coaches are trying to accomplish.

The Bills can save $12.9 million against the salary cap if they release the 30-year-old Williams this offseason. Williams is unhappy. As a result, with three games left in the regular season, reports that Williams' time in Buffalo may be coming to a close are starting to pop up more frequently.

He can come back to H-town, imagine him Watt, and Clowney all on the same line. Damn....

At what cost? Going ultra-cheap at QB,WR & RB? Not to mention ILB & S.... gonna cut Mercilus and eat his cap hit also?

yeah no thanks...

Bills planning to cut Mario Williams this offseason

Mario Williams is playing his final game in Buffalo on Sunday.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that the Bills plan to cut the defensive end this offseason, per an unnamed source with direct knowledge of discussions.

The report meshes with NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport stating earlier this month that the disgruntled Williams could reach the free agent market. There is a "clear, fundamental disconnect" between coach Rex Ryan and his defensive line and Williams might be at the heart of the trouble, Rapoport said at the time.

Williams declined comment on the AP report on Thursday.

Williams has openly questioned his role as well as how other pass rushers are being used this season. Under Ryan the Bills rank 31st in sacks this season with just 20 quarterback takedowns. In 2014, Buffalo led the NFL with 54 sacks. Williams has just four sacks this season after compiling double-digits the previous three seasons in Buffalo -- 14.5 last year.

Williams, 30, signed a six-year, $100 million contract in Buffalo in 2012. With two years remaining on his deal, the pass rusher is due $11.5 million base salary next season -- he's recently stated he's not interested in taking a pay cut. Buffalo can save more than $12 million by cutting Williams.

If we only needed to come up with about $6M, would we want him back or are we too strong at the position?

I liked him, but not $96M worth.

If Mario wanted to play a Watt lite role and be a DE /interior rusher id take him back, but it's not happening. Moot.

Yeah. In that role he'd rotate with Crick and Pagan and very occasionally with Watt. But it would be interesting to see a four man front in short yardage and Goal Line situations. Right now they just shoot extra linebackers at the gaps.

Anyway, he might be icing at a position when we need an upgrade elsewhere.

I just envisioned a five man front of Wilfork, Watt, Williams, Clowney and Mercilus. but it probably wouldn't be as good as imagined.

I fail to understand why DC Schwartz wasn't retained and WTF the Bills thought they had in Rex Ryan (overrated as he is round IMO). Plus don't they run a 3-4 hybrid right now? Mario clearly doesn't fit that type of role.
