This is an interesting debate. What is expected by these big money donors?

Personally I think they should voice their opinions with their money. Not their mouths. Either donate the money or dont. If the AD approaches you and asks you what you think, that is one thing. But dont EXPECT to be consulted like you know anything.

They are not qualified to make judgement on who the next head coach should be.

Oh yeah, sure. Here is several million dollars for you to spend, but ignore to me when you decide how to spend it.

If I'm donating that kind of coin to someone, especially when I'm one of the few people doing so, you can bet I want my opinion listened to. And if I don't think you are listening or are abusing my generosity, then I'll take my money which helps pay your salary and give it to somone who WILL listen.

Its a donation. You dont donate to the Make A Wish foundation, and then expect them to call you and ask you which wish to grant do you?

This is a university. Not a company that you can buy stock in. I would rather my school not be bought out and ran by millionaires.

This guy sounds like a spoiled jackass who thinks he knows whats best for everyone. Maybe he should make a "donation" to Obama and tell him how to run the country.

I 100% agree with Super Mario, but if I am the AD I call the guy up and say 'here's who we're looking at' and if the guys says 'no' then who cares.

But it probably would have made good business sense to pick up the phone, even though you knew his opinion wouldn't change anything.

If you think Make-A-Wish doesn't run major decisions by their biggest benefactors (who normally would be on a board, unlike a school) then you don't know how these things work.

You don't think the big money donors at UT, A&M, TCU, etc have their say when new coaches are hired? You don't think T. Boone Pickens signs off the head coach at OSU before he is hired?

Sure, if there is a pattern or practice of consulting with this guy over decisions, I understand his anger. If he gave a whole bunch of money and suddenly decided he wants strings attached, well, he should of thought of that before making the donations.

And you do? I assume you have made a multi million dollar donation? No? Just guessing? ok.

I have no idea if big money donors have any say with other schools. And if you think they do then you are just making a blind assumption.

Side note: Pickens donated 100 million. Not 3 million.

You don't have to be a major player to know how the game is played.

I've worked closely with charities including those tied to United WAy and I can assure you that major donors are usually on the board and are almost always consulted for major projects and decisions.

I've also been following college athletics for over a decade and know that big school donors usually have a say when coaches are hired and fired , mostly because they will be the ones funding the buyout and/or salary.

It sounds like this guy also tried to keep this private to the school and AD but the media is one making a big deal out of it.
