Texans exercise Tytus Howard's 2023 option
Offensive lineman Tytus Howard is set to remain with the Texans through at least the 2023 season.

Mild surprise for me, so I thought it thread worthy
Maybe not, but it's kind of hard to hold it against him. I think the kid is obviously talented. He's done everything they asked him to & that hurt him.I don't think he has earned it
You're about 4 days too late.So who have we got that's better than him? Or, at this time of the year, can get?
Just another case of the Texans failing to prepare and plan for more than the season at hand. It's not my money, but I would spend this money elsewhere in FA. Howard has done nothing to deserve the 5th yr option. Of course I have a different opinion of Howard than most here do. Cant wait to see what injury he gets next yr. You cant depend on him.
Just another case of you misstating facts.Just another case of the Texans failing to prepare and plan for more than the season at hand.
The plan should've been to let him walk and use that money in FA next offseason. Then either draft a RT or go with Heck. Obviously they feel differently about Howard than I do. They're the professionals and I hope they're right, I hope they dont have to learn the hard way. This is a Warhop call.Just another case of the Texans failing to prepare and plan for more than the season at hand.
I really wanted Caserio to draft him too, but Green is one bad dude. Rooting for the Houston boy to do big things with the home team.Well, we coulda had Evan Neal, but we don't.
I wanted to draft both of them.I really wanted Caserio to draft him too, but Green is one bad dude. Rooting for the Houston boy to do big things with the home team.
Agreed, as well as a pitiful offensive scheme. Provide him with good coaching, a good offensive scheme and leave in the same position the entire year and we will see what he really is.He’s been a victim of poor coaching from the outset. His rookie season they were moving him around trying to make him versatile. The OL coaching under OB was awful. Campen last season didn’t manage to turn it around.
Hopefully Warhop with some investment in Green next door to him will be good.
2 years left of his rookie deal and he’s not a lost cause, yet.
That still looks kind of alarming. But we knew when Caserio came in and started signing guys on one- or two-year contracts that there would be big turnover for a couple or more years. That's how much damage Easterby and O'Brien did.Just another case of you misstating facts.
Howard is signed through 2023, so that in itself is for more than "the season at hand".
Tunsil signed through 2023.
Britt signed through 2023
Cann signed through 2023
Heck signed through 2023
Green rookie contract
Deculus rookie contract
He must have 34" arms. The plan should've been to let him walk and use that money in FA next offseason. Then either draft a RT or go with Heck. Obviously they feel differently about Howard than I do. I dunno but you seem to think that the rookie Green will play RG next to Tytus instead of playing LG next to Tunsil ?He’s been a victim of poor coaching from the outset. His rookie season they were moving him around trying to make him versatile. The OL coaching under OB was awful. Campen last season didn’t manage to turn it around.
Hopefully Warhop with some investment in Green next door to him will be good.

Not sure why I’d assumed that, do you see Scharping at RG? Or Cann? Or the rookie Deculous?I dunno but you seem to think that the rookie Green will play RG next to Tytus instead of playing LG next to Tunsil ?
Sure about that ?
I'm sure I dunno but who knows maybe the rook plays RT and Tytus is back to playing guard ?Not sure why I’d assumed that, do you see Scharping at RG? Or Cann? Or the rookie Deculous?
Didn't Tytus mostly play RT in his last year of college because his team featured a southpaw @ QB ?AJ Cann has been a RG, Green played most snaps at LG. I would suspect they start Tunsil, Green, Britt, Cann, and Howard as the mix they want to see first. Let Heck be swing and Deculous can start learning guard. Morrissey backup center. No reason to play guys out of position
Yes. He played as the blindside blocker. Either LT or RT depending on the QB. Since his starting QB was a lefty, Howard played mostly at RT.Didn't Tytus mostly play RT in his last year of college because his team featured a southpaw @ QB ?
If Tunsil is better then you have an all pro player. Would you consider that to be a good thing? BTW, Everybody says Howard isn't a LG (I agree) so do you think playing Howard next to Tunsil could've made Tunsil look worse than he really is? After seeing how Caserio made moves this offseason, this appears to be Caserio's line of thinking. What I don't get is, Kenyon Green never struggled playing LG, RG, RT or LT, but yet the excuse for Howard is he's been move around too much? Both Texan First Round Picks.
One thing I do know is Howard will be much better playing RT with Green playing RG.
Can you say the same thing about Tunsil?
Therein may lie your answer
Just to add to this, who remembers the wailing and gnashing of teeth after the Howard pick?Looks like Howard has found a home at RT.
He was very good there last season.
I hope he does even better in a WCO style offense but if he does, he will want to be paid like a top RT and deserve it.
If FO doesn't want to do that, he may dip his toe in the FA market next off season - wouldn't that be ironic after all the kerfuffle about where he was selected and the bumpy start to his career?
@Texian knew. Trust me.Who would have thought Dillard would be a bust?
Yes I remember that well because I was one of the biggest complainers about the Texans being outmaneuvered by GM Howie Roseman in Philly who jumped ahead of us in the first round to take Dillard.Just to add to this, who remembers the wailing and gnashing of teeth after the Howard pick?
I also remember how Philly traded up above us to snag Dillard and how pixxed I was - now, I am grateful - thanks Philly. Who would have thought Dillard would be a bust? Not me.
At the time it seemed like an instant knee jerk reaction that they took Howard but now it seems whoever pulled the trigger on him was a genius.
Good for TH - small school guy come good - he obviously applied himself and now will reap the reward.
Huh - didn't know that.Yes. He played as the blindside blocker. Either LT or RT depending on the QB. Since his starting QB was a lefty, Howard played mostly at RT.
This was my thought at the time.Yes I remember that well because I was one of the biggest complainers about the Texans being outmaneuvered by GM Howie Roseman in Philly who jumped ahead of us in the first round to take Dillard.
The thing is Dillard was utterly outstanding at that years Senior Bowl college all-star game leading up to the Draft and his "Draft stock" therefor jumped dramatically, but he hasn't realized the potential that he flashed in the college all star game, though in his defense I think he's struggled with injuries since coming into the NFL.
Yes, and interestingly when Tytus was drafted in 2019 Tunsil didn’t get traded until August of that year, so I’m not sure if the Texans knew which side they were drafting him for, I seem to remember it being assumed he was going to be the LT but looking at the roster it shows Chris Clark and Roderick Johnson as the other Tackles so I’m struggling to remember the exact situation.Huh - didn't know that.
So in reality, he was protecting the QB's blind side - interesting.
So in effect, he was playing LT at the RT position...![]()
That was when they signed Matt Khalil. He got to camp and they realized they made a horrible error and paid the price to get Tunsil.Yes, and interestingly when Tytus was drafted in 2019 Tunsil didn’t get traded until August of that year, so I’m not sure if the Texans knew which side they were drafting him for, I seem to remember it being assumed he was going to be the LT but looking at the roster it shows Chris Clark and Roderick Johnson as the other Tackles so I’m struggling to remember the exact situation.
IIRC, a lot of hope that Clark could man the position until Tytus could be ready. Then Tunsil arrived.Yes, and interestingly when Tytus was drafted in 2019 Tunsil didn’t get traded until August of that year, so I’m not sure if the Texans knew which side they were drafting him for, I seem to remember it being assumed he was going to be the LT but looking at the roster it shows Chris Clark and Roderick Johnson as the other Tackles so I’m struggling to remember the exact situation.
Agreed and it’s why I’m 100% in favor of locking him up prior to the season. There’s a risk there too, but if I’m a betting man, I’m betting that Tytus balls out and then your bidding with other teams and paying more if you can even keep him. Nope, not taking that chance. I’m negotiating an extension now or during camp and locking in this guy for at least 4 years (including 23).Howard couldn't have had his stars align any better. Texans finally get a top notch HC and an offensive system that should make sense. The team then goes out and signs veteran Shaq Mason, a top notch RG. This will be a first for Howard....actually have a RG that can play the position. The team then focused on Center prospects to fill the gaping hole in the middle of the OL. Howard could enjoy his first Pro Bowl type of season and an opportunity to cash in on his success.
You have Tytus for 3 more years if you really want him.Agreed and it’s why I’m 100% in favor of locking him up prior to the season. Btw, that will gmake the oline the most expensive in the entire NFL.
Book-end Pro-Bowl offensive tackles on this Texans OL, well Op-Tex you've lived up to your MB handle once again, but I like it and its' very refreshing to have that much optimism given the gloom and doom mentality around here for too long.Howard couldn't have had his stars align any better. Aj Cann can playThis will be a first for Howard....actually have a RG that can play the position.
He had a good not great year. The center position held down both guard spotsAj Cann can play
Disagree on both fronts. I think last year he was an ascending player and was above avg. Pro-bowler? No, but I feel he has it in him. With better play next to him, a (potentially) better scheme fit, and better overall talent around him...he could get there. No guarantees of course, but he has the tools to get there.Howard is an avg RT. Now way I'm re-signing him until after the season.
If he has that kind of year, they will use the tag on him before they let him go.Disagree on both fronts. I think last year he was an ascending player and was above avg. Pro-bowler? No, but I feel he has it in him. With better play next to him, a (potentially) better scheme fit, and better overall talent around him...he could get there. Then you add in versatility. He can play 4 spots if necessary. He can play LT and LG to at least an average level. As a matter of fact, he played LG quite well when pressed into duty. I want to say it was KC, but he totally neutralized their best player. Might have been Chris Jones. Going by memory at this point.
So, you've got an ascending player who is scheme and position versatile on a team that is now in it's ascending phase, and the guy is still plenty young.
After the season, he's a total FA. You want to take that chance? I don't. If I'm tricky Nicky, I'm locking that bad boy up now if possible, or sometime during camp. I'd do whatever I could to make it happen within reason. It's going to cost you a lot more after the season, when the other suitors come calling. Why do you want the bidding war?
If he has that kind of year, they will use the tag on him before they let him go.
That's kicking the can down the road at best and you're still paying him top dollar and you still have competition. You can save money by locking him up now. Worst case, he's an "average" RT (subjective I know) and best case, he's a pro bowler with the right coaching and system. Don't dilly-dally. Lock him up and let's roll with these 5 in 23 and beyond. Barring injuries or severe under-performance these can be your 5 through the 26 season while CJ is on his rookie deal.If he has that kind of year, they will use the tag on him before they let him go.
