The plan should've been to let him walk and use that money in FA next offseason. Then either draft a RT or go with Heck. Obviously they feel differently about Howard than I do. They're the professionals and I hope they're right, I hope they dont have to learn the hard way. This is a Warhop call.

Agreed, as well as a pitiful offensive scheme. Provide him with good coaching, a good offensive scheme and leave in the same position the entire year and we will see what he really is.
That still looks kind of alarming. But we knew when Caserio came in and started signing guys on one- or two-year contracts that there would be big turnover for a couple or more years. That's how much damage Easterby and O'Brien did.

Yes. He played as the blindside blocker. Either LT or RT depending on the QB. Since his starting QB was a lefty, Howard played mostly at RT.
If Tunsil is better then you have an all pro player. Would you consider that to be a good thing? BTW, Everybody says Howard isn't a LG (I agree) so do you think playing Howard next to Tunsil could've made Tunsil look worse than he really is? After seeing how Caserio made moves this offseason, this appears to be Caserio's line of thinking.

Yes I remember that well because I was one of the biggest complainers about the Texans being outmaneuvered by GM Howie Roseman in Philly who jumped ahead of us in the first round to take Dillard.

Yes, and interestingly when Tytus was drafted in 2019 Tunsil didn’t get traded until August of that year, so I’m not sure if the Texans knew which side they were drafting him for, I seem to remember it being assumed he was going to be the LT but looking at the roster it shows Chris Clark and Roderick Johnson as the other Tackles so I’m struggling to remember the exact situation.Huh - didn't know that.
So in reality, he was protecting the QB's blind side - interesting.
So in effect, he was playing LT at the RT position...
That was when they signed Matt Khalil. He got to camp and they realized they made a horrible error and paid the price to get Tunsil.
IIRC, a lot of hope that Clark could man the position until Tytus could be ready. Then Tunsil arrived.
Agreed and it’s why I’m 100% in favor of locking him up prior to the season. There’s a risk there too, but if I’m a betting man, I’m betting that Tytus balls out and then your bidding with other teams and paying more if you can even keep him. Nope, not taking that chance. I’m negotiating an extension now or during camp and locking in this guy for at least 4 years (including 23).
You have Tytus for 3 more years if you really want him.
Book-end Pro-Bowl offensive tackles on this Texans OL, well Op-Tex you've lived up to your MB handle once again, but I like it and its' very refreshing to have that much optimism given the gloom and doom mentality around here for too long.

Disagree on both fronts. I think last year he was an ascending player and was above avg. Pro-bowler? No, but I feel he has it in him. With better play next to him, a (potentially) better scheme fit, and better overall talent around him...he could get there. No guarantees of course, but he has the tools to get there.
If he has that kind of year, they will use the tag on him before they let him go.

That's kicking the can down the road at best and you're still paying him top dollar and you still have competition. You can save money by locking him up now. Worst case, he's an "average" RT (subjective I know) and best case, he's a pro bowler with the right coaching and system. Don't dilly-dally. Lock him up and let's roll with these 5 in 23 and beyond. Barring injuries or severe under-performance these can be your 5 through the 26 season while CJ is on his rookie deal.
