#27 Kawann Short DT Purdue

#57 Da'Rick Rodgers WR Tennessee Tech

#89 Aaron Dobson WR Marshall

#95 Cornelius Washington OLB Georgia

#124 A.J. Klein, ILB, Iowa St.

#160 Rontez Miles S California

#195 Jason Weaver OT Southern Mississippi

#201 Alonzo Tweedy S Georgia Tech

#233 Dexter McCoil, S, Tulsa

First couple picks went as expected , most of the players I wanted were gone here. Most specifically Alec Ogletree , Jarvis Jones and Cordarrelle Patterson .... I would have liked to have traded down in the first and probably still would have gotten Short.

Didnt like the WR options at 27 , just no value with so many prospects at the position and none had really seperated himself from the others.
I believe Rogers is the most talented WR in this draft class , getting him at 57 is like getting a top 5 pick based solely upon talent - If he can get his head out of his ass he can be one of the NFL's best at the position.

Get to #89 and Dobson is still on the board really threw a monkey wrench in my draft plan - Just too much value to let slip by there. He has arguably the best hands in the draft .... with size , speed and solid route running.

@ 95 Washington wasnt my first choice - Corey Lemonier was my target here but was taken some thirty picks earlier. Had to go back and reshuffle my board after that (and the Dobson choice).
Washington has a lot of potential and ideal size. He can play multiple positions on the defensive front - even lined up as a DT on many occasions.

@ 124 Klein was my target from the get go. Has the best cover skills at the position in the entire draft - plugging him in next to Cushing gives them a dynamic pair at ILB.

160 , 201 were all about adding talent to special teams and the secondary in general , Ive seen enough of Keo to last me a lifetime.

195 - Weaver. Ideally I would have addressed the OT spot - specifically RT much earlier in the draft. I even considered taking Armstead @ 27. The Dobson pick was where I had initially targeted the position but didnt feel comfortable with any of the OT's there. They went fast ....
Weaver will be a project but he has all the tools .... Just a matter of coaching and hard work on his part. Probably practice squad material. Really need to address the position with a veteran FA maybe after the june cuts.

233 McCoil I envision as the 3rd safety taking on the role Quin had filled the past two years. He has the size and quickness to match up with the athletic TE's ... that size should also translate in the red zone when defending those taller WR's (and TE's) in jump ball situations.
This pick also allows both Ed Reed and Danieal Manning to do their thing on the back end of the secondary rather than moving one of them up to replace Quin.

I like it. I think we need to get two receivers that can give us significant playing time in 2014. I also think we have been needing to add some depth at safety for a long time. Manning and Reed will be good starters but we are terrible behind them.

Short seems to be a guy that would be a starter, but we do need depth at NT and DE. I could have done with more depth there, but you can't get everything in one draft.

I also think both Klein and Washington would be upgrades to the majority of the backups we have at LB.

I don't know anything about Weaver, but we of course need depth at tackle.

:bravo:

Wish OT would have been addressed earlier. But the value at the positions you picked was too great to pass up. I wonder if there was a good OT available in the 3-4th rd would Gary/Rick trade a 2014 pick to get an OT. Say like a 2013 5th and a 2014 3rd to draft my favorite RT Fragel at the top of the 4th?

I would approve of this draft. It wouldn't be exactly as I expected but I would approve it.

What I meant by "went as expected" was that I really didnt want to make the pick @ 27 , much rather would have traded out of the selection and at 57 I got my targeted player in Rogers.

Looking at the picks from 20-60 I really didnt see much drop off in talent .....

Had I not taken Short , It would have been interesting to see how long he lasted beyond that point.

In hindsight , If I had that #27 pick to make again , I would likely go with an OT there , and keep my choices the same from 57 to #124.
There were a couple NT/DT guy's available beyond that point of the draft that I think could be solid contributors. The OT's just went much quicker than I expected .....

Really looking forward to the actual draft to see if that holds true .... or if we just over value the position because its a need ....kinda like the way WR's went in this draft exercise while we allowed some prospects at other positions to really drop a few rounds.
