Travis Johnson

Practice Squad
Hi, I was wondering how Travis Johnson was doing in camp. I played with him in high school and just wanted to see what you all think of him. I can tell you that you shouldn't buy into all that stuff about him having character issues because of his off the field issues. He's a really good kid who just go into the some unfortunate situations.

Good luck this season!

I have'nt been to any practices so I should probably not talk, but everything I've heard here and on the radio suggest he is fitting in nicely. when scouting players it often gets lost in the shuffle, the mentality that is required of various positions, Travis has the attitude of a great DT. therefore we (Texans fans) should have no reason to doubt that he will in fact become a great player & a key component of the defensive line.

any storys you can recall concerning his High School football playing days would be welcome :)

thanks for the tales, sounds like a man-child very mature for his age & at least you can say that you beat him on one play :club:

He looks mean and focussed. Always a good look for a defensive lineman. :thumbup

I'm really looking forward to the many sacks he'll get this season. Especially the ones where the QB didn't even see him coming! :heh:

I don't know if I can speak much to his high school years. He left our school after his sophomore year for a school (Notre Dame) with a better reputation for getting kids into the D-1 schools. I do remember him coming in as a 14 year old kid. He was already 6'3 and something like 230 pounds and was benching a lot more than many of the 18 year old seniors. As a freshman, he was a really good player, but you could tell that he was hesitant at times (probably because he was relatively new to the game). But he definitely got better as the season went on, and well for the rest of his High School career...he pretty much dominated.

On his personality though, a couple of things stick in my mind.

1. Extremely loyal to his teammates

2. A very polite kid, always said hi and waved to my parents when he'd see them

3. Just a really funny guy

Also, he comes from a really good family

Couple of other things I remembered:

He was a vocal leader on our team as a freshman

Once (and only once) I beat him on a drill (even I was surprised). You could tell he was disappointed in himself and basically went ALL OUT the rest of practice. I just remembered getting clobbered by him on the rest of the drills for that day. He hates losing.

"Less than two weeks removed from another signature event, with the April 23 draft only three days before his 23rd birthday, Johnson is kind of a Janus-faced portrait of serenity, looking both backward and forward at the same time. And, knowing that he is prepared for the future because of the crucible of the past, approving the view in both directions"

Outstanding contribution there Houstongo - had not seen this article about TJ. Of course it was written pre College Draft when most of us didn't even know that TJ was on Cass's radar. Thanks !
