Top prospects from each bowl?

I just got off work, and I was only able to catch parts of the games there. Did anyone actually follow the top draftable prospects in each game?

DeMarco Ryans? Dwayne Slay? Brody Croyle? Dumervile? Darylle Tapp? Hodge? Hawk? Carpenter? Brooks? etc...

I would prefer to avoid the "he played well" or "I didnt actually watch the game, but..." or anything of the such.

I was just wondering opinions from people who had a chance to watch the game in depth. If you have a PERSONAL scouting report as opposed to a copy and pasted one, that would be much appreciated.

I'm mainly looking at about 7 posters here, but if you would like to contribute, please feel free.

A.J. Hawk was the one I followed closest. He has great instincts and gets to the ball, and never lets go of a tackle. He had trouble dealing with blockers at times during the game, but for the most part he played excellently and I wouldn't mind drafting him.

I watched the Cotton Bowl but couldn't see much of Slay because he was off-camera. From what I did see, he's a hard hitter that has a tendency to let the receiver catch the ball and then try to force an incompletion/fumble by timing the hit. He does well in run support and blitzing.

I have heard similar reports on hawk from today's game. I am REALLY wanting to know about Slay's coverage. Your input is welcomed.
 
I might have to record the Sugar Bowl. Trying to watch Jean-Gilles and Pope at once is a tough task. Pope had a couple of money catches at the end of the 1st half, but the TD catch was a gimmie. He looks like a tremendous athlete @ 6'8". Anyone here watched him at all this season?

I have watched some of this games this year, and he is the most complete TE in the draft.
 
I followed AJ Hawk fairly closely, and am watching my personal favorite for our 2nd rounder, Max Jean-Gilles, the Georgia OG... Here are my humble takes.

AJ Hawk:

Hawk reminded me an awful lot of DJ last year at Texas. Great instincts, incredible quickness, and excellent on-field speed for a 'backer. He had a sack where he looked like he was shot out of a cannon on the blitz, and had several very solid tackles in the open field. Overall, though, I thought he got tied up way too much on blocks inside... and this resulted in some runs that went right by him for long gains inside. As a pure football fan I would much rather see him as OLB in a 4-3 in the pros to use his speed and quickness.

Max Jean-Gilles:

Game is still ongoing, but in the first quarter he was absolutely dominating in the running game (if only they had more OL like him)... I saw two pancakes in the first Q alone. I don't know the DL quality he's going against, but he is too quick and powerful for them to handle. He's been adequate in pass protection. Keep your eyes out for the second half.
 
He just defended off two guys on that last play. He was blocking one guy and someone came free on the blitz and he pushed his guy stumbling back and picked up the blitzer. Its just a shame Georgia can't stop fumbling the ball, but Gilles is simply dominant tonight. I would love to have this guy on my line.
 
Wow - just saw an incredible blitz pickup by Jean-Gilles... He knocked the first DL back then traded to the blitzing 'backer and knocked him back about 3 feet. I didn't think there was any way he was going to get to that backer in time once the RB missed the pickup.

I hope he doesn't inflate his value too much!

Jean-Gillies was pretty impressive with his blocking and I too was thinking that I hope he didn't inflate his value. He was a total beast but again like above I don't know how ppl rank the WV defensive unit. I'd be more than happy with him anchored on that O-Line somewhere.

I thought Pope had a good outing. Couldn't get over the size of the guy and how athletic he seemed. I think Georgia could have used him more though. And had he got a few of those balls actually thrown to him rather than having to bend, stretch or the like, his stats would have been way more impressive I'm guessing.

Haven't watched all the Ohio State game but AJ looked good when the opposition hadn't worked out how to take him out of the play. Was focussing more on Nick Mangold myself though. Think he would look good on that O-Line as well with some work but overall his blocking seemed good.

I mainly paid attention to Abdul Hodge. He broke the Outback Bowl record for tackles with 20 I think it was. He was everywhere. In one series he had 2 or 3 tackles in a row. I saw him and a ball carrier meet like 2 trains head on and Hodge won by a landslide, he put his head down and knocked the ball carrier back about 3 yards. He seemed quick and powerful and was always near the ball.
 
Demeco Ryans- He looked ok, but nothing special, was tied up and knocked out of plays, He plays alot like Thomas Davis

Dwayne Slay- Watched him with interest due to the talk up on the board and I am even less impressed with him now. He is at best a 4th round pick or a 3rd round reach. The guy is not good in coverage and not very fast. He can tackle though if he was just 20lbs heavier and could play LB.

Dumerville- was solid in the first and caused some headaches, in the second he was doubled and chopped up by TE so he was taken out effectively. He is not overly fast, but has a really good motor

Tapp- I did not really notice him at first then they started killing the QB for Louisville. I mean they broke this kids nose it was awesome to watch. Tapp is a monster, big strong, not overly fast. He reminds me alot of a Shawne Merrimen, but not as athletic.

Hawk- did not impress me at all. He is a good LB, but about right in line with DJ and Thomas Davis from last year. He probably has better instincts. He does not play as fast as his numbers would imply. He is relentless though and tough. He will make a good pro, plus his girl has a hot body on her.

Carpenter- ankle was broken and did not play

I was one of the few on this board that thought Dwayne Slay was not a good coverage safety. I have seen him take too many bad angles in coverage, but if there is a player in front of him, he can lay the hat. I would not want to draft him based on what I saw.

AJ Hawk is, I think, a good blitzer but does not cover that well. When he recognizes a pass to his area, he is always about 3-4 feet away from the eligible receiver, usually the RB or TE, but I feel that with NFL coaching, he will be an excellent LB for someone. I would draft him.

Max Jean-Gilles boosted his stock yesterday with his excellent performance. He would be a good run blocker and with some seasoning in the NFL, be a serviceable pass blocker. I would draft him.

Santonio Holmes is an excellent route runner and pretty fast, but I don't like his attitude as evidenced by his celebration on the 15 yard line en route to a touchdown. I am of the Earl Campbell generation when to the end zone, act like youv'e been there before. No draft.

Are you a coach? If so, where? I am a coach in East Texas.

Then you just fired 50% of NFL players. As a GM I don't think I'd ignore his blazing fast speed because he held the ball in the air en route to the end zone during a high profile bowl game. Young guys get excited sometimes, go figure.

I wouldn't be surprised of Ohio State makes a run for the National Championship next season.

Thank you, that does help. I never thought Slay was great in coverage. I was hoping he could be average at best. However, he still seems to me at least, to be an excellent SS prospect. None of our current safties impress me at all. I would, however, keep Brown and Earl. Brown at F/S, Slay at SS.

how does that sound to everyone?
 
Slay can lay the hat and if you play him very similar to Rodney Harrison he will do well. Meaning he never really covers, but zones and shades. He lays the hat and if you are teaching a kid how to hit he is who you watch it is picture perfect everytime. Also 66 where do you coach in East Texas my ex-fiance is a teacher there...

I coach at a 2A school at the JH level at a school called Hardin. I have coached at the HS level as well, but switched to girls sports (esp. softball) after one of my friends became girls coordinator and persuaded me to coach for him albeit at the JH level. I miss coaching football sometimes, but coaching girls is a change. For the most part, they listen better than the boys do. Also, I have won more with them than at the boys level although I did coach on a district champ freshmen football team at Dayton (4A). On that team, we had a QB that played DB for the Texas Longhorns in the late 90's.
 
I just wanted to bump this thread back up and try to keep it relevant. Some guys should have had time to review most of the games and most of the top prospects.
 
Tonight I will be watching Penn State LB, Poluz... to see if he is that missing MLB we need. I will admit that I am on his bandwagon at this point, but I have only managed to read reports and watch clips. We don't get many Penn St. games down in Texas.

Everyone please try to follow him and post your opinions. As of right now, he is my first option for us in the first round, after a trade down or two of course.
 
Fiesta Bowl-

Troy Smith QB, OSU. showed great leadership & composure in the pocket. has a gun, the strongest arm I've seen in any of the bowl games with accuracy. strong stands tall in the pocket, can shake & bake if needed but looks to read defense goes through options, can improvise. much more complete than Jason Campbell who came out of Auburn last season & drafted 25th overall by the Washington Redskins. upgraded his stock to possibly coming out this year.

Santonio Holmes, WR OSU. everything a gamebreaker should be from the #2 WR position. reminded me of Santana Moss same size & quickness. I was just waiting for him to declare to put him on my 1st rd. Mock Draft. he will be a outstanding addition for some NFL team.

AJ Hawk, LB OSU. pretty much the best middle linebacker in the draft, reads the defense, moves laterally side to side with excellent pursuit has a nasty attitude & nose for the football.

Orange Bowl-

Tamba Hali, DE Penn State. he may be undersized but so was Dwight Freeney. great motor and desire looks like he will continue to elavate his game to the next level, strong, quick burst attacking pass rusher.

Music City Bowl-

DeAngelo Williams, RB Memphis. 233 yards later with a NCAA rushing record 34th 100-yard rushing game & NCAA-record 7,568 all-purpose yards he solidified himself as a top 10 pick. he understands how to read his blockers, the defense & has the physical tools to break tackles and make make the first man miss.

Sugar Bowl-

Max Jean-Gilles, OG Georgia. Ditto what everyone else has said, does seem to wander aimlessly at times in the secondary as Mosses split the sea everyone just gives him a wide berth, at some point the RB/OC has got to figure that one out.

Holiday Bowl-

Haloti Ngata, NT UO. the best NT ready made for the pros I've seen, very athletic & nimble almost finesse in style, but does wrap up well just would like to see a little nastier disruptive approach, needs better coaching to achieve his true potential.

Davin Joseph, OT/G OU. all around great lineman. can drop back and block with his long reach @ the LT position. lacks height for position but would be an outstanding LG in the Pros (next to Pitts) is a wide active body in space.
