Top 5 needs going into 2016 offseason

I think it's a good time to have a discussion regarding the top needs going into the 2016 season, be it draft or FA. We've seen over the years that it's impossible to fill all our deficiencies in one offseason, so let's assume there are 5 dire needs that we have and go from there. Let's also be specific in regards to position, rather than say offensive line, let's name positions.

My top 5 list, in order:

Quarterback. I think this one will be unanimous, we need a good young QB, period. I'm of the opinion that drafting two would be wise.

Offensive Tackle. The Newton resigning has turned out to be a big mistake, and regardless of what he's paid, he needs to be replaced. Maybe he can stick around as depth until it makes financial sense to cut him, but he doesn't need to be starting. The Brown injury also pushes this need to the near the top. We'd probably be smart to address this relatively early in the draft and also either add a FA or draft another later.

Running Back. Foster is likely done as a bell cow guy. He may be done as a Texan. None of our other guys are dynamic. I would much prefer this as a draft acquisition, for obvious reasons.

Strong Safety. Someone with range against tight ends, able to play the flats quickly, and physical enough to play in the box is sorely needed.

Middle Linebacker. McKinney looks like he'll be a serviceable inside player, but he can't cover. Neither can Cushing. We need someone who can play nickel LB.

After these 5, offensive and defensive line are the positions I would look to improve and add depth at.

Mods: feel free to move this to the general section of the forum if you feel it best placed there.

1. QB, this one is obvious to everyone.
2. OT, Brown may not be back and we need depth anyway. Someone to challenge Newton or just add the overall talent level of our line.
3. RB, we need a starter here and luckily RB's fall on draft day.
4. NT, we've got no one behind Wilfork and he might be gone next season.
5. WR, Washington needs to go and someone like Bralon Addison to play the slot while also handling PR/KR duties.

After those 5 we've got needs at Safety, TE...actually I don't think there's a position that we don't have a depth need at.

In all seriousness...

1. QB- Highest guy on our board we can get by hook or by crook. I wouldn't draft two unless we came into more draft picks AND one of our guys fell past were we had him slotted by a good margin
2. RB- We really need a bell cow back to take over
3. OT- Browns injury just too scary
4. Slot WR with speed... Addison would be a great fit IMHO
5. TE- Hopefully a good QB can utilize them properly and they can learn to catch what is in their catch radius

QB - One with a "pair".
Safety - One that can cover the TE's of the AFC. This team will be facing Gronk, Eifert, Kelce, the Ravens will have two Williams/Gillmore, Thomas in Jacksonville, etc. damn near every year. And we've seen what good TE's do to this secondary.
RB - Blue, and Grimes are just JAG's. Polk needs to be gone. I like Hunt, and would like to see him in more of a "Sproles" role next year. He can scoot. But this team needs Arian.2
OL - Everyone is screaming for tackle. I get it, but that line could use any position. And I'd like to see em get a Conrad Dobler/Dierdorf kind of lineman. Just a nasty ol mo-fo. Start cleaning guys clocks out there.
DE - I like Crick but I think he can and should be replaced.

Obviously our needs have changed greatly.

1. OT- Browns injury still too scary
2. WR- speed at the position would be great
3. SS- A thumper with coverage ability
4. TE
5. ILB- see SS

And the last 4 all good ST'ers

I think D-Line fits in there somewhere. I think I'd put it ahead of safety anyway (and I don't disagree that safety is a need). And it wouldn't shock me to see them take one as high as round two. Right now it's Watt, Wilfork, and a hope for Covington to step up in year two. They could still re-sign Crick, but I'm not sure that changes anything about the way I view it.

You are absolutely correct and I don't know how I forgot that. DL should be #2 and safety after

This is a thread worth bringing back to the top as our needs have obviously changed.

1. OT, still don't know about Brown's injury and Newton sucked last year.
2. DT/DE, someone to replace Crick.
3. WR, someone opposite Hopkins and added depth to the WR corp.
4. Safety, added talent in the secondary.
5. TE,RB, interior O-line, added depth and talent. These should be opportunity picks.

See OT as always, a priority need. Brown is not losing his starting gig as Texans left tackle so it maybe more appropriate to concentrate improving right side. Someone in similar mold to Duane but bigger so he can eat up space/ defenders on the right side. So if Texans use OT first don't be surprised if you hear Germain Ifidi – Texas A&M called. First glance not that glamorous but this would allow Newton to be their swing tackle & add stability, along with power & size to the offensive line.:barman:

My issues with this statement is how do we know this? Browns injury is a serious one, he might make it back and he might not. If he does make it back, will he be at his usual Pro Bowl level of play or will he be slower or weaker? We don't have access to Browns medical files or his rehab schedule but I do remember that Doc/CND said that this type of injury was serious and made it sound like the odds of Brown coming back to his former Pro Bowl level of play were not good. I'm just saying we should hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. If Brown makes back to full strength and plays well then we've got another outstanding OT on the roster who would probably replace Newton at RT, but if Brown doesn't make it back to full strength then we've got someone to take his place at LT if needed. Or, are we comfortable with Chris Clark playing LT all season if Brown doesn't make it back?

All well fine & dandy but what I'm saying, other than I have every confidence in Duane Brown full recovery, is that this is not a great OL class & there are only 3-4 ready made LT prospects so it might come down to selecting Ifidi type who can come in & fortify the right side for now until further information is available regarding Texan Franchise LT.

I'm not entirely comfy with our OC situation, either.

If things fell perfectly to me, I'd probably go:

1, WR -- Our offense needs more weapons.
2. OT -- DB's injury scares me.
3. NT/DT -- Need someone who can step in and eventually replace Wilfork.
4. SS -- Need a good player to pair with Hal, Demps was better than Moore, but Moore was terribad.
5. TE -- I don't know if our problems at TE come from our TEs, our QBs, or our coaches.
6. OC -- I don't have any comfort in the Raider second-stringer as a replacement.
7. ILB -- I'm not sure how much more gas Cushing has left in the tank and we're going to need someone good to pair up with McKinney.
8. RB -- I like Miller but I'm not overly fond of the rest of our RBs.

And I'd probably take a late round flyer on a QB.
