Time to evaluate the backups too

humbleone

Waterboy
McNair made a nice move bringing in Dan Reeves to "evaluate the players" and with some of our key starters knicked up pretty good DC, DD, AJ and GW now would be a great time to play Ragone, Morency/Hollings, Armstrong/Morgan and TJ.

And this is not a playing to lose strategy unless you believe it is impossible to win with these backups in which case the point is they should not be our backups (and yes I know Banks is our current #2 but we already know what he can do and we don't really with Ragone).

We have a rare and valuable opportunity to give some guys we have a lot invested in some real game experience...let's test their talent and "want to" and include them in the Reeves evaluation project for McNair. As an added bonus, if Ragone could win against Jax and/or the 49ers, his trade value might become interesting to one of the QB hungry teams out there. Go TEXANS...the turnaround has already begun!!!:redtowel:

They are currently doing a much more important evaluation at QB, which leaves Ragone out in the cold. Making the decision on Carr is their number one priority at that position, I would think. This week's half of playcalling was another example of the evaluation process.

BS.

You just want them to tank the games for Reggie.

Not true at all...check previous posts and you will see that:

(1) I would not draft Bush if we had the pick and
(2) Testing the talent and improving Ragone's trade value to the team has been an idea for several weeks that IMO is worth trying.

IMO there is enough tape and history on DC to make the call on him (either way btw although I come down pro DC) without playing him with a hurt hip against Jax and the 49ers...the same can not be said for Ragone.

I would agree that we need to look at the backup players but not this weekend, we should wait until the 49er game. The JAGS are in town!

David Carr should use this game as the biggest evaluation test of his career. All the players should be put on notice! This JAG game is going to be a play-off like atmosphere at home, why not play all the starters and see how they can play under pressure? Big Games tends to show who the play makers are… not because they were high draft picks but because of what’s inside their hearts! Win, lose or draw, I would like to see all them play and play well! Go Texans!!!:redtowel:

I posted the same thing regarding Carr and Co some time ago. But after sunday's game with the Cards I would have to say that I was wrong. I find it very intriquing in the differences of the two halves. If a move like this was done earlier in the season we could be talking about a totally different ending to the season. Say what you will about Carr but if he was given the opportunity to call the plays could there have been a different ending to some of those games? The fact still remains that 5 of our loses were by a touchdown or less, one of which was Cinn @ Cinn to the tune of 16-10. And not't to leave out the tied score of the Indy game at halftime. Yes alot of the problems being disscussed would probably still be there but I believe it deserves some thought. The modivation of a winning or loosing mindset are the same, they just have different outcomes.

Dude, Ragone is a career #3 QB. He has no trade value. He is at home here and this is where he will stay. I like watching him in preseason, but that is all.

Not sure that is correct...if Ragone had won a start, he would have some 3-4rd pick value and if you are correct in your assessment then we gave up way to much for him and he should be added to the PBuch, Hollings and Babin list.

I think this should become the slogan for this message board. I say this because of the repeated comments I see about how worthless our back-ups are even if they have never had a chance to prove anything. They are thought to be worthless compared to whatever journeyman free agents that may be available, worthless compared to our own underperforming starters, and worthless compared to unproven back-ups on other teams. When we get rid of a few of them and they get a chance to play, I'm afraid our new slogan will be:

Absence makes the heart grow fonder - Eleanor Roosevelt

Familiarity breeds contempt...and children - Mark Twain

It seems to be our history to this point, though, doesn't it? I think that's why we are here. How many potential players have we lost in straight draft choices because of some of these decisions?

I know what you are saying on Ragone, but I just disagree. He looks very uncomfortable over center and when he drops back. That can't just be lack of snaps in practice.

Assuming we could obtain a 3rd or 4th round pick for Ragone .... why would we? He's a backup, but probably OK enough to run this gimped offense. And where did we draft him? 3rd or 4th round, I think, so I am not sure what value you've developed there. I don't know - I guess I'm missing the point.

He was a "3". My point is that he is either a QB with upside worthy of a "3" and if so, then he should be our "2" going into '06 or he was another Casserly project reach and we should flip him to another team since the '06 draft is deeper than it has been in years at positions of need for us like OL, LB and TE. IMO, playing him while Reeves is here to "evaluate" helps us get it right regarding him either way.
