Chart: The top 3rd down play-callers over the past 3 years
Chart: Top scoring play-callers over the last 4 years
Some takeaways:
-- Philip Montgomery, Tom Herman, Mike Bobo and Chad Morris all landed head-coaching jobs this offseason.
-- Georgia, Kent State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, San Diego State, Utah, Utah State and West Virginia are all looking for offensive coordinators. It will be interesting to see if any of the above names or assistants on their offensive staffs fill these open coordinator jobs.
-- Josh Heupel was dismissed at Oklahoma on Saturday. Mike Stoops says he has an idea of what he wants in a replacement, and the next coordinator will bring his own system, but wouldn’t disclose what he’s looking for.
-- Andy Ludwig was recently named offensive coordinator at Vanderbilt.
-- It was brought to our attention after originally posting the chart that Marshall offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Bill Legg has called the plays since arriving in 2010. Over the past four years, Legg’s Marshall offenses have averaged 37.6 points per game.
-- The AFCA Convention is in Louisville next week. You can be sure coaches will be speaking with each other about open positions and going through some interviews.
Third down is money down, and success on third down is a high predictor of winning. Which coaches are best when the offense needs to make a play?
Here’s a look at the top third down play-callers over the last three years.
Some notes:
- Former UCF offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe saw his unit convert 46 percent from 2012-14, but he retired this offseason.
- Note the records of these teams. The only squads to not post a .500 record over this span were Marshall in 2012 (5-7), Air Force in 2013 (2-10) and Michigan in 2014 (5-7).
- Four of these play-callers became head coaches this winter: Tom Herman to Houston, Philip Montgomery to Baylor, Mike Bobo to Colorado State and Chad Morris to SMU. Lincoln Riley was also hired to the Oklahoma offensive coordinator job.
- The list includes two head coaches in Paul Johnson and Jimbo Fisher.
- No specific offensive style helps set up and convert third down. This list includes triple-option, spread, Air Raid and pro-style offenses.
- As you might expect, many on this list are among the nation’s top scoring play-callers.
