KILT (610 AM) will end Rome's 14-year run with station

Look's like Jim Rome is on the way out on 610 AM, and it is not clear that any of the other local sports channels will pick him up. In the show's place, a local sports talk show led by Mike Meltser and Brad Davies called "MAD Radio," will start next Monday.

A local show will be better in that spot in my view. Jim Rome has had nice run here. Good luck to him.

KILT (610 AM) will end Rome's 14-year run with station

Jim Rome, whose hard-edged, opinionated talk show has been a fixture on KILT (610 AM) for almost 14 years, will be dropped by the CBS Radio all-sports station after Friday’s show after more than a year of declining ratings.

Rome’s syndicated show will be replaced by a new local show hosted by Mike Meltser and Brad Davies called MAD Radio. Morning show hosts Marc Vandermeer and John Lopez will work from 6 to 10 a.m., followed by Meltser and Davies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Rich Lord and Josh Innes from 2 to 6 p.m. and Barry Warner and Shaun Bijani from 6 to 10 p.m.

Rome is now heard on more than 200 stations nationwide in addition to his ESPN television show, but Houston was one of his first major market affiliates outside the West Coast when he debuted on KILT in March 1997.

The show quickly became one of the most popular parts of KILT’s lineup, and Rome visited Houston at least four times for promotional stops, including an October 1998 appearance that drew more than 4,000 at Sam Houston Race Park.

However, KILT program director Gavin Spittle said Rome’s listenership, as measured by Arbitron ratings for the men 25-54 demographic that is the key demo for sports radio advertising rates, has been in decline for more than a year as ratings for the rest of the station's dayparts have increased, particuarly in the wake of the Texans’ recent upsurge.

“This is a performance-based business, and we have exhausted our options,” Spittle said. “We like Jim and thank him for all he has done for the station. He has been a huge fan of Sports Radio 610, and we have been huge fans of Jim Rome.

“Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the ratings in Houston have slid to the point where a change is necessary."

For the December ratings book released this week, KILT ranked first among Houston’s four all-sports stations and 10th overall in the weeklong ratings for men 25-54. The station has been in the top 10 for three consecutive months as the Texans, whose games are heard on KILT, have climbed to the top of the AFC South Division standings.

In weekday ratings for the same demo, KILT ranks ninth overall in morning drive, eighth overall in afternoon drive, 12th from 7 p.m. to midnight and 14th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the midday demo that includes the Rome show is the only one in which it does not lead all four Houston sports stations.

“I wish I had better news for the Rome listeners, but I hope they will enjoy our live and local lineup,” Spittle said. “We have the ability to talk about our local teams all day long. Even though we are Houston’s sports leader, I’m so proud that we continue to look for ways to improve.”

Former Rice and NFL player N.D. Kalu will work on Mondays and Fridays with Davies, who returns to full-time radio work after an earlier stint on KBME and recent work on Texans studio shows with KILT, and Melstser. Brien Straw will replace Meltser as the news anchor during KILT’s morning show, and Robert Henslee will remain on the afternoon show.

Rome is on vacation this week, so he has made his final on-air appearance on KILT. A spokeswoman for Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates the show on more than 200 stations nationwide, was not available for comment Wednesday afternoon.

Premiere’s options to place Rome on another sports station in Houston appear to be limited. Premiere is owned by Clear Channel Communications, which owns KBME (790 AM). However, that station’s midday lineup anchored by Matt Thomas is beating KILT in the ratings, so a change is not likely.

KFNC (97.5 FM) airs the final hour of ESPN Radio’s Colin Cowherd show from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by local programming, so a change is unlikely. KGOW (1560 AM) is the flagship station of Yahoo Sports Radio, which features Houston-based host Craig Shemon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., so it is not a feasible option for the Rome show.

Rome was a dominant figure during his early years on KILT, which changed to all-sports in 1994 and took a flyer on Rome when longtime station manager Dickie Rosenfeld added the show in 1997.

"We were trying to carve out a niche, and I think he helped put us on the map," Lord said in 2007. "His show was radically different from anything we had heard, and he got a lot of attention early on.”

Rome’s listeners, in fact, sparked a coup of sorts at the station in 1998, when Rosenfeld attempted to tape-delay an hour of the show. Listeners’ protests persuaded Rosenfeld to back down and air all three hours live, a practice that continued throughout the show’s tenure on KILT.

Awe that's too bad I'm from Cali and always enjoyed his show there, Having the show here in Texas at noon was fun for me! Good Luck from a clone!

Waiting for the first "The Texans should claim him on waivers" post.:kitten:

Thank god Rome is finally going to be gone.

Worst radio show host on the airwaves for years. He started off great with some new type of schitick when he first got his own show and his first tv show was really good as well. But over the years his act got extremely stale and tiring. He became more like an obnoxious frat boy that just acted goofy and I hated how his show was like 3 hours long. He definitely made a big name for himself and all, but man I'll be glad to see him go.

I haven't lived in Houston for 8 years and I was already sick of him for a couple of years before I moved away. Granted, his show was long and I only cared about local teams and their division opponents, playoff opponents, etc. The whole frat-boy thing got old within a month, though, and I was in my mid-twenties...

Seemed like every time I turned on the radio looking for sports commentary, I'd hear some "clone" talking frat-boy/stupid street druggie trash. That, or just more about the all-important west coast teams and Kobe's sexcapades and Shaq's big feet or something that I was sick of hearing about.

Great put down.

I stopped listening to rome simply because I wanted local sports talk on my lunch break. So I became a mt fan. He's pretty good actually. Gonna be interesting to see 610 compete with 790 during that slot now.

I never really enjoyed Rome's show. He damn near created the caller who talks a mile a minute in an attempt not to get hung up on and sound cool enough to be on Jim's show. For the record I hate listening to those guys.

I won't miss him because I don't listen to him.

The battle for midday local show ratings should be interesting.

The show that talks more about sports and less about their kids/relatinships/movies/video games etc... will be the one that I listen too.

I knew he would rue the day that he fired Travis Rodgers. I tweeted that whenever Travis Rodgers first started on the airwaves here in Houston.

What I didn't like about Rome was that he fell back on lame sound effects too often when he had the chops to conduct a really good interview. There were so many times when he would have a great insightful interview one day and then spend the next week with:

1. UH OH
2. It's not Ryan, it's Ryne
3. Whyyyyyyyy???
4. Fat!

Rome irritated me becuase he typically resorted to lame sound effects rather than putting the time and effort into putting together a quality show. When he wanted to he could, he just didn't want to enough.

I haven't listened to Rome since Kyle Brandt took over, no skin off my back having gone, but 610 is such a crappy station and the "local talent" sucks. 790 needs to can Mighty.

I was a Rome fan for a long time, but moving up here with no local station carrying him meant I had to stream. Now, when i do catch him, I wonder why in the heck did I used to like the show so much?

Jim Rome gone.

((pause))

Awesome.

((pause))

((papers shuffling))

((slaps mic))

Tongue me.

((pause))

Out.

Wish the local radio station would pull his show here. Doubt it though, they're proud to be one of the "original three" radio stations to carry him.

Could never understand the fascination with Rome. The guy is a grade A doucher, and his claim to fame was his douchiest moment when he fake bowed up to Jim Everett and called him Chrissy.

I'll take a local show over a national loud mouth any time.

I think the show was better 10 years ago. Funnier. It just grew stale. Still, there's more airtime than decent radio hosts in Houston. This extra time slot won't help that. I wish the Dan Patrick show would be picked up by one of these stations.

I like Dan Patrick's show. He's very wry, and his interviews are fantastic. He always softens them up, and then from left field comes some really tough questions.

I occasionally listened to Rome's radio show, when Matt Thomas just gets boring with it. But the Jungle suffered from too many calls from clones. They are rarely funny, and the inside slams against other clones is stale.

You can get the 'best' of Rome's 3 hour radio show, though, just by watching the 30 minute episodes of Rome is Burning. I think he shines on his tv show, without callers, and just has solid takes.

I prefer The Blitz on 97.5 at lunch. Those dudes are so sarcastic that I always end up laughing at least once a day when listening to them. Funniest was when they did a pepper spray test on their producer. They got a 1 day suspension for that stunt, and still refer to it today in hushed tones.

Awful. I guess it is for me because I been listening since I was a kid (11, I believe).

Even went to the tour stop with my pops when he came to then-Enron Field. Rome definitely is a love 'em or hate 'em kind of dude. Don't like the move, obviously, but understand it. DON'T understand why they gave Meltser and Davies a look though. Not a fan of either, really. Matt Thomas, if not for jokes, doesn't really bring much to me.

My favorite is when Rome repeats a joke 25 times in a row. He makes sure by the time he is done with it, it's not funny anymore.

It's not really a sports show anymore. It's more of a Howard Stern style with a bunch of idiots calling up and ranting about other clones.

Bittersweet for me... when the Rome sshow is good, it's good... when it's bad, it's really bad... Sometimes I would listen, sometimes I'd go to 790... it was really funny, then really annoying... what really bugged me was that the host, and all of his callers were a little too scripted... Then his guest hosts, I don't like most of those guys as hosts, and seeing how he takes so much vacation, becase "I get so much vacation", you have to hear from them a bunch... I think the Sklar brother may be some guys I'd like to toss back a few beers with, but to have to listen to them for three hours go back and forth with each other is like nails on a chalkboard... but I will miss the emailers and texters... and of course the triple U "sponsors"...

Really excited to see what the new guys bring, building a show from the ground up... I always thought Meltzer (sp?) could be really good, but was a little too crammed for time in that one hour which made for a weird show... now that he has a little time to breath, and a co-host for balance I think it could be a pretty awesome show...

I love this move! I tried to call 610 yesterday on my way home from Houston on I-10 while they were talking about it on J&R as I have been out of the loop on vacation all week and yesterday was the 1st I had heard of it.

Now I don't have to have radio silence from 11-2!

This guy is worse than Rome and his "crew" sucks as well.

Their podcast on iTunes is some of the best sports/comedy radio there is.

I generally only listened to the interviews on Rome, I have to say he is a great interviewer.

I like the local talk throughout the day now....

It is nice to go on my lunch break and have the choice to listen to 790 or 610 now.

I know folks will say what about 1560, but I just could never get into that station...The sound quality is not good on my radio and the shows just never captivated me...
