Ok let's say we end the season 2-14 with the first pick in the NFL draft.

First, we fire Capers and Casserly, and bring in a younger, motivated coach. I would prefer one from a college team, but a successful teams OC would also do. I say younger, because other than Parcells, it seems the best coaches recently have been the younger ones (Marvin Lewis, for exmaple)

Anyways, this coach hires his own crew of OC, DC, etc etc. We give him whatever he wants at this point.

Draft Day: We trade the first pick of the NFL draft to the Arizona Cardianls for the 4th pick, a 3rd rounder, and their first rounder in 2007.
The Cardinals choose Matt Leinart #1, the Vikings choose Reggie Bush #2, and the 49ers choose the BA wide receiver with the #3.
The Houston Texans then draft the BPA LT (probably ferguson).
We then package one of our 3rd rounders from this year with our cardinals first rounder from next year and trade it to a team drafting in the late teens, early 20's for their first round pick this year.
With that pick, the Texans draft the best possible TE available.
2nd round, pick 1, the Texans draft BPA Center or ILB
3rd round pick 1, the Texans trade this pick (plus 5th) to Redskins for LaVarr Arrington
3rd round pick whatever, the Texans draft best available OL (Guard)
4th round, pick 1, Texans draft best CB available
5th round, pick 1, Package this pick with 3rd round pick for Arrington
6th round, pick 1, Texans draft BPA
7th round, pick 1, Texans draft BPA, plain and simple again

Then, in Free Agency, the Texans attempt to sign at least one OL who is above average (RT, Guard, Center), one WR who is as close to a legitimate #2 as possible (there are always lots available during FA), a FS to backup Coleman, and a KR/PR if Mathis hasn't come into his own. If possible, we should also try and sign a declining veteran (think Sharper, Glenn, Boulware, etc) who is going to cost his team too much to sign. At this point, we need the leadership, and even if they come overpriced and old, the mentorship is what is important. Another corner would be ideal, but may be difficult. McCallisters contract is up though...

Then our depth chart would look something like this:
LT: Rookie (Ferguson); Wand
LG: Pitts; McKinney
C: Rookie/FA; Hogdon
RG: Wiegart; Brown
RT: Wade; FA
QB: Carr; Ragone; Banks
HB: Davis, Morency, Wells
FB: Norris, Wells
TE: Rookie/Joppru
Z Receiver: Johnson
X Receiver: Gaffney/FA
Slot: Armstrong/Mathis (Gaffney if we don't sign someone)
4th/5th receiver: Whoever is left

LE: Walker/Johnson (depending on TJ finishes the year)
DT: Payne; Johnson (he was NT in college)
RE: Smith; We could use Babin as a 3rd down DE like he was in college
ROLB: Arrington
LOLB: Babin/Peek
Strong Side ILB: Greenwood/Rookie
Weak Side ILB: Whichever of those two is worse at tackling/better at coverage
CB1: Robinson
CB2: Buchannon/Faggins/Free Agent/Rookie
FS: Coleman
SS: Early; Brown; Rookie

IMO this would make me extremely happy and with the new coaching change, we could have an awesome year! Go Texans of 2007!

PS: Good ILBs aren't that hard to find in the 2nd round, as shown by Seattle last year, picking up Lofa (leads their team in tackles). Arrington would also serve as the veteran influence we desperately need on the defensive side of the ball. With a motivational coach and an opportunity to be the best player on the defense, he could really succeed here.
 
interesting and lots of detail and thought put into this post. i like the general thoughts of the post.

i feel unless walker steps up this year, i love the guy, but i believe he would have no salary hit against us and would subquently be released.

trading back that high would be good, frugile, but good if we could get a player of need. imo TE that high is not needed. if we were to do as proposed i would look for an ILB....hodge or brooks (hopefully brooks if there)...

the DE i would suggest to replace walker would be elvis dumerville as of right now. he has good size, and is very quick both lateraly and off the ball. he is a ball hawk.

the SS you are speaking of would be Slay from TT

3rd round would be center

my proposal using much of what you posted:

our starting lineup would look something like this:
OL: Rookie, FA/Wiegart/Rookie, FA/Rookie, Pitts , Wade/FA.
TE: Rookie/Joppru
RB: Davis backed up by Morency
FB: Norris backed up by Wells
QB: Carr
WR: Johnson, Gaffney/FA, Mathis/Armstrong

DL: Elvis, Johnson, Payne, Smith
OLB: Babin/Peek, Wong
ILB: Greenwood/hodge or brooks
CB: Robinson, Pburnt/Rookie, Faggins, Sanders/Rookie
FS: Coleman/slay
SS: slay/Brown/Earl

i also switched pitts to the right side.

of course all of this offseason is a step by step play dependent on a new coach and a new gm because we know neither of the two we have are competent enough to complete something of this complex nature... :deadhorse :hmmm:

You didnt show any formation at all. You showed "/"s which don't mean much. The topic starter definetly showed a 3-4.

Merely as an illustration, but really draftniks and couch GM's need to spend at least 25% of their time thinking about cap consequences--the real burden is probably far greater, but to be generous.

Walker's cap his is $4 mil to keep this year, $9.2 mil to release. Next year he is $5.8 mil to keep and $7.4 to release. This may be a classic case of Casserly bungling to sign him to this contract, but the Texans are basically trapped into keeping him this year and next. The year after it will basically be a break-even with an ugly number either way. Before you get rid of Walker, sign Arrington and another 5 FA's you really need to think about the cap. It's there and it is reality except in fantasy land.
 
I actually edited back to a 3-4, but now I think the 4-3 makes more sense. We have the personell to do it, and our LBs have proven they cannot pass rush. I don't know, maybe my first post was better.

He is signed thru 2009. Thanks Casserly. And for the record IMO Walker is a difference maker when healthy. But Charlie paid way more than market value and for a much longer term than any sane GM should have.
