Texans sign Tyson Clabo

After releasing former third-round pick Brennan Williams on Monday, the Texans found themselves dangerously thin at the tackle position.

They addressed that Wednesday by signing former Miami Dolphin tackle Tyson Clabo, according to Clabo’s agent, Chad Speck.

Clabo started 15 games for Miami last season and could challenge Derek Newton at right tackle.

Much needed tackle help. RT @DZangaro: The #Texans reach a deal with veteran OT Tyson Clabo:

http://www.csnhouston.com/football-houston-texans/talk/texans-reach-deal-ot-clabo …

Clabo started 15 games for MIA and was rated 48th/76 OTs overall in 2013 (>25% snaps),

But his second half of the season -- first year w/MIA -- was markedly better than his first. Paul Dunn would have coached him in ATL.

Allowed 11 sacks, 8 in first half of season. Played RT next to RG John Jerry.

New Texans OT Tyson Clabo was originally signed in Denver by Rick Smith. He gives Texans veteran OT who can play either side.

Is he better than Winston? Looks like he's started every game he's played in but was part of a line that allowed 58 sacks last year.

Yeah the entire Oline for the Dolphins was bad, for that reason alone i think that could of made his stats worse. In the past he has been better anyways.

I follow the Fins a bit because of RT17, and Clabo improved mightily over the 2nd half of the season. Also, Miami's line was a completely dysfunctional mess.

I think this is a good move to at least secure depth at RT, if not replace Derek Newton completely.

Tyson Clabo's 2013 season:
First 6 games: 8 sacks allowed, -14.5 @PFF grade.
Last 9 games: 3 sacks allowed, +9.0 grade

Another item: played all 16 games in seasons 2008 through 2012, played 15 games in 2013.

Four weeks ago when his name came up, I posted this info I was able to gather about him. At that time the Cardinals interviewed him for a starting job, but things fell through when Clabo wanted more than a 1 year deal.

Clabo was always a pretty darn good pass protector and run blocker, but was especially known for his run blocking in the power run scheme. Last year, ProFootballFocus graded him out as the worst OT in the NFL for the first 6 games. It was felt that the reason was because Miami was his first real major exposure to the ZBS. One of the reasons the Falcons released him back when (besides going for more youth) was that they were moving to a ZBS offense and were concerned about his transition to such a system. But, it should be noted that last year he seemed to finally better acclimate to Miami's ZBS later in the season. He has been extremely durable, with only basically one minor short-lived hip injury that never kept him out of a game. At 6'6" and 315 pounds, he would seem to be a perfect fit in the OB offense. As I feel he still has some left in the tank, I'd be in favor of getting this multi-Pro Bowler on board as a strong vet presence and mentor, as well as a competition for the RT vs backup position.

So Clabo "passes" the DrCND "physical"???

Let's hope Clabo's 2nd half of last season is what we can get

Tyson Clabo started (very) slow in 2013, but final 8 games yielded +7.4 grade. Derek Newtons last 8 saw a -10.6 grade. Battle to watch

He fell off a cliff in Atlanta, and was pretty damn bad in Miami (yeah his second half was better than the first, but that's really damning with faint faint praise). I hope he's better in Houston, but I have no qualms in saying that Clabo is probably going to disappoint.

And Doc is usually the buzzkill... :stirpot:

I like this signing. If Newton's problems really were injury related and he's going to play significantly better this season, then we at least have a good backup. If Newton's play last season was just what he is, then Clabo can step in and improve that position.

I don't see him as a significant upgrade on Newton. Which is a problem because Newton sucks something awful.

Agree, but we needed someone to replace Q and Brennan Williams wasn't that guy unfortunately. I'd consider it a win if he beat out Newton.

How so? He was rated 2nd/76 OTs in 2011 & 18th/80 OTs in 2012, his last two years in ATL. Falcons tackles were a dumpster fire in 2013, after Clabo was released for what looks like cap reasons.

Bong drank the water on this one.

Clabo got better as he got acclimated to ZBS. That's why he improved in the 2nd half of the season. Clabo has always been a dominate run blocker and should be a massive upgrade over Newtons play from last season. I think Newton will be healthy and improve a great deal this season.

All of the OL are good in the run game which is a great sign. Brooks/Clabo =3rd&1 conversions. Didn't Clabo play under Dunn at ATL where he was a very productive RT? Brown/XSF/Myers/Brooks/Clabo should be a powerful run blocking OL.

The Clabo and Eric Winston situations are very similar.

Except it doesn't appear that Clabo thinks about becoming part of the media/head of players union etc.... With Clabo football appears to come 1st. Which is the way it should be.

All right, excellent signing! I hope he beats out newton for starting RT. Also, this team needs depth in the OL!:pirate:

Those are PFF rankings which are certainly not the end-all for statistical analysis for football. They are done with human eyes (and all of the biases that go with them) tracking and charting the game.

Talkiong to Falcons fans, him and Baker (the LT) both did not do nearly as well in 2012 as they had in previous years, a lot of that being attributed to the Panthers and the Bucs getting better than being dumpster fires. There were not many people bemoaning the loss of Clabo in Atlanta that there were when Winston was released here.

My rule of thumb for stats is if you have to break up the stats to show that he was good for part of a season or whatever, you are probably trying to hard to paint the player in a positive light. A couple years ago Clabo was a really good OT but that is not the case anymore and if you look back on NFL history there have been plenty of guys who were good for a couple years then fizzled out.

I am pretty sure this years O-line is not going to be as good as it was under the best years of the Kubiak regime, I don't think it'll be as bad as it was last year. The Pats have gotten away with having mediocre to outright bad O-lines and almost non-existent running games, but they have a first ballot HOF'er slingin the ball. We have the Amish Rifle, a recovering from injury Foster and a huge huge hole at RT. This is a decent signing because it at least puts another body on that particular hole, and if he's not completely finished then Clabo should beat out Newton. I don't think he's going to come in here and turn the offense around, and I really don't think he's going to be so much better at RT than what we already have that we will overlook any deficiencies in his game. At this point in his career, he's just a guy, and I think the market and his availability this late into the offseason probably agree with these views.

Sometimes reality is a stone cold *****.

Only money I am concerned with is guaranteed money. Probably find out that tomorrow. Likely a pay as you go deal with no dead money in the 2nd year unless he is on the 53 man roster.

Did Atl not have a good offense in 2012? Was Ryan protected better? Was their offense a major component why they made the playoffs and were a hair away from beating SF and making the SB.

Last yr Clabo struggled to adjust to a new scheme and figured it out the 2nd half of the season. I think Clabo has a chance to be a major upgrade. I hope that I'm right on this one. While I respect your opinion hopefully everything turns out roses for the new BOB Texans.

I may be wrong but if the Texans stay healthy but I think they have a chance to have a winning record this yr.

We really needed a depth at T position and signed a good one. I like this signing.

It is refreshing to see the team aggressively attack depth at positions of need with solid veterans rather than relying on good health from the starters and a late round round pick who flashed for a couple games the previous year... which was the achilles heal of the team from 2009-2012.

OT: Clabo
LB: Dent
S: Lewis

and I am confident they will make use of the #1 spot on the waiver wire. I wouldn't be surprised to see another trade or two either. Ultimately, I do not know if O'Brien will be successful in Houston. I am confident, however, that the team will have better depth, better special teams, and starters will face more competition. I like that!

Would be nice if we can upgrade more Texans' depth. I hope, we can find another N for an insurance as we aren't sure when Nix would be able to play for us.

I hope so. I still don't see why The Texans don't sign caveman, and at least bring him to camp, to see what he still has left. Even at his age, I think he would be better than Newton. Hell, my Grandma on her Hover-Round is better than Newton.

I agree, and if nothing else he makes for nice depth.

I not, repeat not, for signing Incognito, but if he came cheap and had some new-found humility in regard to his fellow humans, a HUGE if, I wouldn't mind his signing as long as his leash was short and his pink slip was at the ready.

I doubt that hearing "Troglodyte" blaring in the locker room on a daily basis will sit well with his teammates, though. :kitten:

Haven't we signed enough OL players from Miami..two already. :fingergun:

band-aid

Texans could have addressed this in a big way with OT Greg Robinson. Then Kyle Van Noy OLB. Sticking with CJ in 3rd & Savage in 4th however.

Is this to be the swing tackle? Or to put heat on Newton?

I can't believe that they didn't know that Newton was terrible. We have lots of game tape on him. From what I've heard Newton is only good for blocking speed rushers. Any defensive end with strength is too much for him to handle.

I'm also surprised they didn't go after Winston either. Seems like he's a solid player. Maybe it has something to do with him being the head of the union.

I really like the XSF pick. Think of how good the OL would hve been with Rd.1 Robinson or a trade down and picking Matthews in the 1st and XSF in the 2nd. The OL would've been set for yrs. However I was very happy with the Clowney pick. I wish he would have had the bone spurs removed though.

Clowney/XSF/Clabo > than Robinson/XSF. IMHO

When I hear the name "Tyson Clabo" all I think is "Bookends"

We're sending two OT's to the Pro Bowl this year guys. Count on it!
