The Texans are signing former Los Angeles Chargers starting safety Jahleel Addae, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.
Addae went undrafted out of Central Michigan and played six seasons for the Chargers before being released this offseason.
Addae, 29, started every game for Los Angeles last season, recording 75 tackles, one interception and one sack.
He had 96 tackles two seasons ago for the Chargers along with a half-sack.
For his career, Addae has recorded 372 tackles, 4 1/2 sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
He is a similar but somewhat more controlled version of Swearinger. Has always been known as an extremely hard hitter. The problem he has is that he is felt to have been burned too often in coverage last year. Many have said that he's a box safety who was forced to play free safety with arrival of the Chargers' 1st rnd pick safety Derwin James there. In 2016 and 2017, before James appearance, he had an 85.2 and 83.4 PFF rating, respectively.............after James, in 2018 a 60.1.
Interesting to know his "origin."

Now THAT is funny. He will turn out to be a value pick up and a good addition to the teamThere goes that wild & crazy Brian Gaine again blowing thru the McNairs fortune !
In 2017 he ranked 7th among safeties in snaps lined up in slot percentage so sounds like he is reasonably versatile and gives the DBs solid tackling/physicality missing from K Jax departure. Hopefully our coaches don’t miscast him like it appears he was last season.

Yep sounds to me like Crennel is trying to replace some of Matthieu's versatility. I like this move.
He signed a 1-year contract............terms not yet released.did I miss it? Any info on the contract? Assume this is not a 1 year prove it
Interesting.An upgrade over Hal.
Interesting.
Both were late rounders too eh?

That would mean only $150,000 is guaranteed.@AaronWilson_NFL: Texans' one-year deal for veteran safety Jahlee Addae is worth $1.105 million: $805,000 base salary, $150,000 signing bonus, up to $150,000 roster bonus $9,375 per game on 46-man roster

People can take digs at Gaine's spendthrift approach, but these under the radar deals allow you to resign your vets and give you flexibility.

I'm curious to see if Mathieu's comments change the way the Texans do Business. We have Addae, Roby, & Kahlil on one year deals. If these guys play well, I wonder if they'll address extensions during the regular season.
Correct on the 2 years left caveat. Not too sure about the team refusing to negotiate in a players last (only) year of a contract.
I believe the team refuses to negotiate with two years left on a contract?
I thought the team did negotiate with Mathieu but chose not to meet KC's offer.
Could certainly be wrong about that though.

The Texans have almost exclusively (notable exception of Watt) refused to negotiate new contracts prior to one year remaining.
The part to add is that is that they haven't done extensions during a season either. If you don't get a new one done this off-season, it won't be discussed until the next off-season.
I don't understand. These one year contracts are signed during the off-season.
These players who sign one year deals must wait until the end of the contract year before they can negotiate and sign another contract.
If that is the case it appears to be a win win deal for both sides. It worked out well for Mathieu. The team could have retained him if they wanted to meet his price. Am I wrong? The fact that you sometime don't wish to match an offer doesn't necessarily mean you are cheap, most often just prudent.
Where is the downside for the player or team?

When have the Texans ever retained their own guys, minus Watt/McKinney/Hopkins? McKinney is the outlier and I'm surprised they kept him because they only pay the Hopkins/Watt level guys and let the Bouye/Brooks/Jones level guys walk. This is another way the Texans org needs to change the way it does business.
Bouye/Mathieu/Brooks/Jones etc...
HB was saying during the year we could have extended him before FA starts. Then only we are talking to him and we may have gotten the deal we offered accepted without competition. Historically we seem to not like to do this, distraction, gives players more leverage, I don't know. If you are doing 1 year prove its, and the guy is looking strong week 8, I would be open to extensions if it fit the longer term plan.
I suppose the team could affix a value to the player and make a offer to extend. I don't see where that should be a problem.
I don't know if Gaine has the authority to do that, but he should. Times are changing with the team so maybe this will be addressed in the future. Eventually there has to be some stability to your roster.
Well, we drafted two OL. and our draft class is not full of injuries....What times have changed?
