Gerald McCoy signs $98M deal
Gerald McCoy has signed a seven-year extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth $98 million, making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL.

McCoy, a 2013 All-Pro, will get $51.5 million guaranteed, the most ever given to a defensive tackle in NFL history. His new deal will average $14 million per year...

Watt guaranteed $51.876
McCoy guaranteed $51.5

Watt signed 6 year extension, McCoy a 7. Both around $100 million.

Gerald McCoy's deal will have big cap #s each year if Tampa Bay used their preferred "pay as you go" structure (cash & cap the same) w/him.

Gerald McCoy’s franchise number would’ve been $19M next year. Now, he averages $13.6M with a chance at $14M. Still highest paid DT.

Going to be interesting to see how the Lions deal with Suh, especially with Calvin Johnson's extreme cap number next year.

Pretty sure I heard it's been made known that Suh will not be back in Detroit? Maybe I'm wrong on that?

I think that was the sentiment heading into the season, but he is essential to their D and seems to have matured this season (so far).

He wasn't worth this much.

I agree, he's a good interior lineman but I haven't seen him as a difference maker on their D to command that type of $$$. Is this the new market rate for good a defensive lineman perhaps?

Yeah, that's the stupid problem with the NFL and all other sports. They create this ridiculous market where every new top free agent at the position somehow is entitled to a slightly higher contract than the last guy. I'll never understand why team owners have allowed that crap to continue. There is always one of them that will do it, and it just muddies the waters for teams around the league in the future. Mario shouldn't have gotten anywhere near what he got. Hell, Watt may not be worth that much coin honestly. When you pay that much money to any guy you become a lot more limited with so many other positions.

I agree you have a better team with 20 average to good guys than with 2 superstars and 18 bums

McCoy is actually pretty good. Maybe the best interior DL in the league behind Watt and Suh. But this deal is crazy.

Players who are considered top of their position get paid. How is this a difficult thing for some of you to process?

I understand but it's not my point. McCoy is not a difference maker in the "W" column for his team. He is talented and right behind Suh in that regard at DT, but he is not elevating the play of that defense nor making game changing plays to warrant that $$$. Is what it is, congrats to him.

This is the same argument people made about Watt getting his huge contract. McCoy is one of the top DT's in the league and makes plenty of plays for the Bucs. Their inability to win games has as much to do with him as the Texans similar woes and JJ Watt.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't think Watt deserved his contract. Small snippet: Watt has scored the Texans go ahead TD twice, against the Bengals in the 2012 playoff game and the Bills this year. Those are not normal but they are game changing AND contribute directly to wins (which is part of what I stated). I'm not saying D-linemen have to score to be excellent players and McCoy is excellent. I like McCoy but $98M seems to be a lil high, the Bucs have the $$$ so good for him.
