WASHINGTON (May 25, 2005) -- Tampa Bay was awarded the 2009 Super Bowl today in a vote at the NFL owners meetings. It beat out three other finalists for the game: Atlanta, Houston and South Florida.
Super Bowl XLIII will be the fourth Super Bowl in Tampa, and the first one since 2001, when the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants, 34-7, in Super Bowl XXXV. The first Super Bowl in Tampa was held in 1984, when the Los Angeles Raiders beat the Washington Redskins, 38-9, in Super Bowl XVIII.
The 2006 game -- Super Bowl XL -- will be held in Detroit, followed by Miami in 2007 and Glendale, Arizona, in 2008.

Negative Jesus said:That really came out of nowhere . The two frontrunners were Houston and Atl from what Ive been hearing .![]()
I was out of the Country for the last SB , now it looks like I will have to wait even LONGER to go my 1st SB . :brickwall

The NFL is all about the good old boys club, you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours, than they are in giving the SB to a deserving city!! Miami would have been a better choice than TB!! Even if they do have the SB in 2007!! I feel robbed!!
YodAa said:Whats wrong with TB? They've already hosted 3 SBs so obviously they know how to throw a party. And TB is probably a fun city since they didn't even need a new stadium in their pitch to get the SB.
MikeMc said:Apparently some city officials were saying how other cities, ATL & TB, were going to pay to have the SB in their city. What is it coming to now..the Olympics!? I guess if the SB generated $300mil for Houston the last time, Mayor White could have paid the NFL SB committee at least $100mil to host the 2009 SB. I wonder if that is the future of the SB. 5 year deal for $50mil per.
I guess the NFL & SB Committe have that type of power considering the amount of $$$ generated for a host city's economy.
So much for the Downtown revitalization plan and the Light Rail!!! Money not well spent!! And mayor white said he would not give into tactics of "buying" the SuperBowl...ummm, what did you do with the billions of $$$ dumped into Downtown and the light rail!?
rittenhouserobz said:He should use that money to build a new stadium for the Dolphins. That Proplayer looks like a dump compared to Reliant.
I think John McClain hit it right on.nunusguy said:John McMlain now claiming McNairs role may have had an adverse affect
upon Houston's SB chances.
" Texans owner Bob McNair's role with the NFL's special committee on league economics might have worked against Houston's bid to get the 2009 Super Bowl that was awarded Wednesday to Tampa, Fla."

http://rockymountainnews.com/drmn/broncos/article/0,1299,DRMN_17_3807046,00.htmlA group of millionaires arguing about the league's $6 billion pie wouldn't seem to be that big a concern, but some owners agree with Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson that a new agreement on how NFL teams share their revenues is the biggest step to the league maintaining its high profile.
Wilson and others such as the Pittsburgh Steelers' Dan Rooney and the Kansas City Chiefs' Lamar Hunt are concerned the gap between high-revenue teams such as the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins and the rest of the league is becoming too wide.

I've heard several local sports people on 610 that have been saying for quite a while that Houston was almost a lock to get this SB.
Either they are seriously uninformed or there are more politics involved than anybody suspected.
The only 2 cities I ever read or heard mentioned were Houston and Atlanta.
For Tampa to win surprises me.
please. it's called "weather"SheTexan said:It's called MONEY honey!! You BUY your way in! Offer the NFL an extra million bucks, plus whatever else the Glaziers slipped under the table, and you got yourself a SB!!!!
lucky13 said:houston is not a destination vacation location. sorry to break it to you.
keyfro said:well to be fair a lot of the superrich people out there do not reguard houston as a vacation spot...anywhere in south florida is cause of the beaches...we have galveston and if any of ya'll have been to galveston you know it's not daytona beach...
now as far as new orleans is concerned i don't see how that's a vacation spot and houston is not...
but the superbowl has to be more about the game than a vacation...
if you ask me the superbowl should be divided up amongst all the teams...no team getting the superbowl twice in 20 years...you want equality amongst the teams then do it this way...yes even green bay deserves a superbowl chance...who cares if the weather is freezing...football isn't a panzy sport...give us another ice bowl...l
