Tampa Bay gets 2009 SB

Found it, per NFL.com

This stinks!

Tampa Bay awarded Super Bowl XLIII

WASHINGTON (May 25, 2005) -- Tampa Bay was awarded the 2009 Super Bowl today in a vote at the NFL owners meetings. It beat out three other finalists for the game: Atlanta, Houston and South Florida.

Super Bowl XLIII will be the fourth Super Bowl in Tampa, and the first one since 2001, when the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants, 34-7, in Super Bowl XXXV. The first Super Bowl in Tampa was held in 1984, when the Los Angeles Raiders beat the Washington Redskins, 38-9, in Super Bowl XVIII.

The 2006 game -- Super Bowl XL -- will be held in Detroit, followed by Miami in 2007 and Glendale, Arizona, in 2008.

When would be the next Super Bowl for Houston to target...2010, 2011?

I read somewhere that 2010 would go to the Jets, if they get their new stadium build. Don't know about 2011.

Have been waiting for the announcement since 10am...what a waste of time.

Any theories as to why Tampa? :dangit:

So, when is our next chance at this? 2020?

That really came out of nowhere . The two frontrunners were Houston and Atl from what Ive been hearing .

I was out of the Country for the last SB , now it looks like I will have to wait even LONGER to go my 1st SB . :brickwall

NFL politics!! I feel like kicking myself when I get caught up in the excitement of something like this!! The NFL is all about the good old boys club, you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours, than they are in giving the SB to a deserving city!! Miami would have been a better choice than TB!! Even if they do have the SB in 2007!! I feel robbed!!

Wow! Tampa Bay! Another small city hosting the SB?! I don't get it but I'm not worried. We'll get another one pretty soon.

You'll most likely have to wait until we get a new stadium because just look at this, from 2004 (Sb XXXVIII) to 2010 (Last SB site chosen yet) all but one of these sites have either new or renovated stadiums:

2004 XXXVIII Houston, Reliant Stadium: New
2005 XXXIX Jacksonville, ALLTell Stadium: Renovated
2006 XL Detroit, Ford Field: New
2007 XLI Miami, Dolphins Stadium: Old (Will be 20 yrs old in 2007)
2008 XLII Arizona (Glendale), Cardinals Stadium: New
2009 XLIII Tampa, Raymond James Stadium: Still relatively new (will only be 11 yrs old by 2009
2010 XLIV New York, Jets Stadium: New

You can coun't on 2011 probably being in one of the new stadiums like maybe cowboys or Colts, but hey! If my Bucs could get an 11 yr old stadium an SB who knows maybe we do have a chance.

Apparently some city officials were saying how other cities, ATL & TB, were going to pay to have the SB in their city. What is it coming to now..the Olympics!? I guess if the SB generated $300mil for Houston the last time, Mayor White could have paid the NFL SB committee at least $100mil to host the 2009 SB. I wonder if that is the future of the SB. 5 year deal for $50mil per.

I guess the NFL & SB Committe have that type of power considering the amount of $$$ generated for a host city's economy.

So much for the Downtown revitalization plan and the Light Rail!!! Money not well spent!! And mayor white said he would not give into tactics of "buying" the SuperBowl...ummm, what did you do with the billions of $$$ dumped into Downtown and the light rail!?

Whats wrong with TB? They've already hosted 3 SBs so obviously they know how to throw a party. And TB is probably a fun city since they didn't even need a new stadium in their pitch to get the SB.

In all likelihood, this was our last shot at a SB in the near term. Ours will be an old stadium with many new ones up and running by the time the next open date comes along. Our next real chance will come in about 2035 when we build a new stadium.

When's Dallas getting theirs? 2011? I guess we could go for 2012 - but there'll be another new stadium somewhere that will get priority...

Very surprising, I was sure we wouldn't get it but was just as sure that
Atlanta would ! TB was a real long shot - I'm sure there were Vegas odds,
wonder what they were ?

I didn't figure to have enough money to buy a ticket if it was held in Houston. :crying:
I couldnt afford to go when it was here. :crying:
As far as me going to Atlanta or Tampa to watch it ? :pigfly:
Most of the games look the same on my TV from my comfortable recliner no matter what stadium it is played in. Lets just hope our Texans are playing in the game.
Sorry guys and gals, I can't let myself get down about this.

cac: :coffee:

BORING CITY!! Just like Jacksonville!

Let's face it! We will never get another SB unless we change our name and call ourselves Houston, Florida!!

Well, with respect to politics, we are as much like FL as any other state, plus our former gov & their gov have the same last names....I think they are related somehow to! :dangit:

Since we missed out on that one, it will be a while. Dallas will get the next one in this part of the country once it builds its new stadium. I would guess we get our next one around 2018-2020.

That's all pretty much a crock Mike. Can you still ride the Light Rail? Is downtown still revitalized? Of course you can and of course it is so how's that not money well spent just because we didn't get the 2009 Super Bowl? 2011, 2012, 2013, and on are possibiliities. Future Baseball All-Star games are possibilities as are NBA All-Star games. If you thought that Houston did all that to downtown just to get the 2004 and 2009 Super Bowls then I can see why you would be dissappointed. It's fortunate for us though that there are a wide variety of events that those improvement lend themselves to.

There will be other Super Bowls, they just won't come until after 2010. Before then we may not get to host one but hopefully we'll be watching the Texans play in one.

I don't know why Wayne Huizenga thinks Miami should be getting a SB every 3 years. As if no other team deserves the honor and privelage of hosting a SB. It just sounds conceited to me. He should use that money to build a new stadium for the Dolphins. That Proplayer looks like a dump compared to Reliant.

It is only about 20 years old. A stadium should be used a good 35-40 years before you build a new one.

Interesting how all this went down.

I've heard several local sports people on 610 that have been saying for quite a while that Houston was almost a lock to get this SB.

Either they are seriously uninformed or there are more politics involved than anybody suspected.

The only 2 cities I ever read or heard mentioned were Houston and Atlanta.

For Tampa to win surprises me.

John McMlain now claiming McNairs role may have had an adverse affect
upon Houston's SB chances.
" Texans owner Bob McNair's role with the NFL's special committee on league economics might have worked against Houston's bid to get the 2009 Super Bowl that was awarded Wednesday to Tampa, Fla."

I think John McClain hit it right on.

Not fair in their thinking, but Bob McNair would not win a popularity contest with these guys right now. It's a shame that it all played out together.

A group of millionaires arguing about the league's $6 billion pie wouldn't seem to be that big a concern, but some owners agree with Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson that a new agreement on how NFL teams share their revenues is the biggest step to the league maintaining its high profile.

Wilson and others such as the Pittsburgh Steelers' Dan Rooney and the Kansas City Chiefs' Lamar Hunt are concerned the gap between high-revenue teams such as the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins and the rest of the league is becoming too wide.

It's called MONEY honey!! You BUY your way in! Offer the NFL an extra million bucks, plus whatever else the Glaziers slipped under the table, and you got yourself a SB!!!!

please. it's called "weather"

the SB is a taxpayer-financed vacation for the superrich in this country. they do the stadium reward one time and the SoCal, New Orleans and Florida the rest of the time.

houston is not a destination vacation location. sorry to break it to you.

well to be fair a lot of the superrich people out there do not reguard houston as a vacation spot...anywhere in south florida is cause of the beaches...we have galveston and if any of ya'll have been to galveston you know it's not daytona beach...now as far as new orleans is concerned i don't see how that's a vacation spot and houston is not...but the superbowl has to be more about the game than a vacation...i think that's part of the problem in today's society...it's not about the game anymore it's about the vacation for the two "best teams" in the nfl...if you ask me the superbowl should be divided up amongst all the teams...no team getting the superbowl twice in 20 years...you want equality amongst the teams then do it this way...yes even green bay deserves a superbowl chance...who cares if the weather is freezing...football isn't a panzy sport...give us another ice bowl...let teams like carolina and indy have a shot at hosting one...plus stick it to miami and their fat owner for thinking they deserve the superbowl every three years

Agree

now as far as new orleans is concerned i don't see how that's a vacation spot and houston is not...

New Orleans has the reputation as a party city, and Houston does not and there are things in New Orleans that are winked at, whereby in Houston, it wouldn't.

but the superbowl has to be more about the game than a vacation...

Sounds good, but when looking at the makeup of the attendees, it isn't about the game, itself.

if you ask me the superbowl should be divided up amongst all the teams...no team getting the superbowl twice in 20 years...you want equality amongst the teams then do it this way...yes even green bay deserves a superbowl chance...who cares if the weather is freezing...football isn't a panzy sport...give us another ice bowl...l

Oh heck no! No way is the Superbowl going to lose money for the convenience true football fans in Iceland type climates. Football might not be a panzy sport, but all the big bucks to be made from the "Superbowl Event" is not going to be compromised in an open air stadium in Wisconsin in January. I don't have figures before me, but the tickets are probably in five figures to the general football fan. $500 and up per ticket shows that this isn't about entertaining the football fans that we see at the stadiums during the regular season.

I don't think it is fair that Houston can be eliminated since it will be five years since the last one, yet the state of Florida has been selected three times in the same time frame. Therefore, even if Dallas is selected shortly after the stadium is built, that should not in all fairness have any impact on Houston getting one the following year.

Tampa is a beautiful city but I'm wondering if it's got the hotels needed for a Super Bowl. I'm just very uninformed on all that but I thought it was very pretty.

As for the "beach" angle.....who wants to go to the beach in Feb when it is 60 - 70 degrees....even if it is SoCal or FL!?

Is Houston trying to knock itself down to New Orleans level just to get the SB? If so..I am going to be leaving soon! Why not get the Texas Congress in the middle of it...just legalize gambling...let Tillman renovate the Dome (into a Super Casino) and the SB will come to Houston every other year!!

We can use the same ole story that was used to get the Texas Lotto....proceeds of Gambling Tax goes to fund Texas Education! Maybe then, we can rename the Texans as The Gamblers....like old days!

Thoughts??
