Supplemental Draft - 7-14-05

Just wanted to see what folks are thinking about the supplemental draft and if there might be anyone of interest we might want to talk to or might be of interest to ponder about if :pigfly:

One name that got my attention was USC DT Manuel Wright.

Not sure if we get picks or could get him or another decent prospect coming out, but figured since it's dead news season we might as well kick this topic around. :fishing: Thoughts??

Just wonder, have any good players even come out of this draft? Think the biggest player ever to get picked was the Boz and we all know how he turned out. :brickwall

Don't think so. We've got Milford Brown (G/T) out of it and Hollings as well.

Bernie Kosar was taken in a supplemental draft. I believe it was 1985. Some would say that he was a "good player".

Off the top of my head....Bernie Kosar, Bobby Humphrey, Rob Moore, and Steve Walsh were supplemental picks.

He was very good player. Old browns fans talk about him like he's Joe Montana or something. I did not know he was a sup draft guy. Thanx for the info.

Wasn't Cris Carter a supplemental pick as well? I seem to recall him being one, but I'm not sure. Guess I'll have to look it up.

Exactly, so maybe we should stay away from this for a while. We tend to reach too much because both these players were overhyped.

We had extra picks and the franchise was just starting up. Both guys are still on the roster. Put up or shut up year this year for Hollings. Brown was not a high pick though.

I would not mind us spending a 3rd on Manuel Wright. I know many here don't like that high of a choice for him, but to me the reward, if he is good, far outways the negative. We will have a year to observe if he will eventually be a good fit for our DL. If he is, then we won't have to worry about spending a first or second round pick on the DL next year. If he does not show that he has the stuff to be competative, then we will be in the same position as we already are minus the Saints trade this past draft.

I think someone higher than us will spend one of their thirds though...so I guess my hopes are not very worthwhile.

Obviously all of this hinges on his workout July 8.

It's a weighted lottery and unlike a normal draft. Teams with six wins or less are placed together, then another group of non-playoff teams and finally the playoff teams are grouped together. There will only be a couple of players in the draft and it is done via email from what I understand.

the guy has only started 2 games he just too unproven to me. If he would of stayed at USC for 1 more year came out and dominated i would of said he is a 1st or a 2nd rd pick. I think coming out early means i dont think anyone will go higher than a 4th for him. I think he is hurting himself in the wallet by coming out 1 year early

He entered the sup. draft because his grades weren't good enough, so he was going to miss this season anyway...I'd be willing to bet someone spends a 3rd on him, but I hope it's not us...

some one will offer a 3rd i agree i hope its not us..... but its horrible that he is going to run from his responsibilites whats going to happen on the field when he has a responsibility there is he going to run then!!! is that fair to say!!!

Looks like Wright could go pretty early in the supplemental draft...
From NFL.com
The NFL isn't quite through with drafts this year. The supplemental one will be held July 14, and USC Trojans defensive tackle Manuel Wright is drawing heavy interest.
Wright was scheduled to visit the Eagles today, the Bengals on June 18 and the Dolphins on June 24. Wright also is planning to work out July 8 at USC for any interested team.
A 6-foot-6, 310-pound defensive tackle who runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.8s, Wright now figures to go as high as the second round of the supplemental draft. Any team that picks him will lose a corresponding selection in the 2006 NFL Draft. One person familiar with Wright said that, had he remained at USC and had another big season, he could have been a first-round pick next April.

Run from his responsibilities, how is that? There is no obligation to go to college. Right now NFL teams want him. You would have him spend next year not playing then hope to come back as a starter and show all his potential?--that is two years of his life and off his NFL career. I don't see where it is irresponsible or some character flaw for him to chose the NFL in his current circumstances.
