Steel B's Bye Week Mock

The Texans should be picking in the 22-30 range.

Rd.1 Brandon Thompson, DT/NT, 310 LBS,5.04Clemson- Thompson is a run stuffer who gets very good penetration into the backfield. His only knock is that he doesn't play hard every down. (How many big DT's do?) This is the only reason he falls on draft boards.

Rd.2 Traded along with a 2013 2nd rd pick for Matt Flynn, Flynn is a more mobile version of Schaub. His arm is stronger than Schaub's. He also has looked very good in limited time that he's played. Mike McCarthy speaks very highly of Flynn. I dont think Schaub will ever be as effective as he's been in the past. When your not mobile to begin with and you suffer a significant foot injury Schaub is no longer a fit in this offense.

Rd.3 Nate Potter, OT/OG 6'6 298, 5.18 Boise St.- Potter has great feet, he's tall athletic large framed kid. Knock on Potter is he needs to gain strength. A developmental OL. You will have to wait on Potter to gain weigth/strength for a couple of yrs. But the wait will be worth it. IMHO

Rd.4 Jarius Wright WR/5'10, 180 LBS, 4.34 Arkansas- Wright is one of my favorite WR's in this draft, Good hands, great speed, Wright is a perfect slot WR. (I also like AJ Jenkins alot but dont think he will be there)

Rd.5 Rishard Mathews, WR 6'1, 215 LBS, 4.54 Nevada- Matthews is a big, fast playmaker. He's a big play guy who has made alot of big plays. He was Kaepernicks favorite WR last yr. He's having another big yr this yr. Former JUCO guy who falls only because of lack of playing against big time competition. Make no mistake thiugh this guys a stud.

Rd.6 Jerry Franklin ILB 6'1 245 LBS 4.6 Arkansas- Franklin is the leader of the Arkansas defense. He's active, and a little undersized. He reminds me alot of Sharpton.

Rd.7 Taylor Thompson DE 6'6 287 LBS 4.85, SMU- Thompson is a hard working playmaker, He's got great length and strong hands. Thompson is a bit of a project. But he's got the god given ability, he just needs to gain weight/experience.

These projections/weights/times were based off of NFL Draft scout rankings.

Let the critiques begin

Well at least we agree there is some opportunity to upgrade this defense @ the point of attack.

Really like Flynn too but doubt it's in the Packers best interest.

Not a fan of Potter unless it's Harry.

I would be OK with another Wright.

Nevada prospects offer good value if character checks out.

Franklin a very solid pick this late.

Great measureables, aren't they pretty close to Mario Williams?

Like positions drafted in order addressed :tiphat:

I really like the Thompson pick in the 1st round as he should be perfect for our 1 gap system. I also think he possibly frees us from picking a depth DE later in the draft because Earl Mitchell could now be moved to DE which would suit his stature much better. I don't like trades in a mock since they are so subjective and think you have better odds of winning the lottery than correctly predicting a trade. I like the Potter pick since Boise St. produces some good O-linemen. He seems a little light in weight but at 6'06" it should be no problem to add 20-25 lbs. easily and an NFL level strength and conditioning program should add that strength pretty quickly. I'm not very familiar with the remaining players though I like the Franklin pick, I don't see the need for 2 WR's.

Understood about the trade thing. Trading back into the bottom of the 1st or top of the 2nd for Tanneyhill is the way I would go if I couldn't make the Flynn trade. The reason I would try to make the Flynn trade is that the Texans are built to win now and by the time a rookie QB is groomed the window for AJ/Ryans/Winston will be almost closed. Hopefully this is a moot point and Leinhart shows that he's the QB of the present/future.

The reason that I projected 2 WR's in this mock are, they only carried 4 WR's this yr. and B.Johnson needs to be replaced. I really like J.Wright and Matthews. They are very talented and have different skill sets. Wright is a burner who's smaller. But runs good routes and has good hands. Matthews is a bigger/physical WR. Who's plenty fast, has good hands 4.5. But needs to work on his route running. By drafting both WR's you're hedging your bets that one of them will make an impact in 2012. (Wright would be my guess) And the other would go on the PS.

If you get lucky and hit on both of them, then you've hit the lotto. It's not out of the question. Like I said both are talented. Matthews (faster Walter) Wright (a bigger almost as fast Holliday)

Thanks for the imput. I know how closely you keep up with the mock draft thing and enjoy the back and forth banter on differing players. I'm looking forward to your next mock. So we can discuss it. It's harder to do these mocks until after the all star/bowl games. But I enjoy doing them anyway.

From the 4th rd down I just went with players that had speed and were value picks regardless of position. Atleast they will be able to contribute on ST's while they are learning the ropes in the NFL.
