Speculation: Two Names Floating Around

Pure Speculation:

I am hearing two names consistently floating around the Texans camp:

(1) Jason Fabini, who the team is looking at for the RT position (making Wade the highest paid lineman coming off the bench); and

(2) Ben Leber from the Chargers, looking at putting him at SOLB (Greenwood on the weak side and Wong in the middle/possibly looking in the draft). If the go after Leber it will need to be fast as he is generating a good deal of attention.

I have heard both Shoebel and Putzier's name mentioned as well. However, I think Putzier's agent is initiating the contact more than the Texans at this point.

John Runyan may visit as there have been talks but the club is concerned about his age and possible forthcoming durability problems.

I hope we don't overpay another guy to come in and play RT while we continue to pay Wade. Leber I wouldn't mind even though he comes from the 3-4. I would have to say no on Runyan. And as far as Putzier I hope he only comes here if the price is right.

So how long do you think it will be until we start hearing names come off the board. As of now, FA has been open 43 minutes. Surely people are getting contracts done now. So a few questions.
Who is the first player signed across the NFL?
Who is the first player signed by the Texans?
How long until either are signed?

Hopefully Fabini's name is floating around in the let's not get discussions. Fabini has averaged giving up 8 sacks over the last 4 years. That would be 12 more sacks than Wade in the same time period.

I'm with you on that one. I also wouldn't mind seeing the Texans showing some interest in Anthony Weaver, or if they're looking at the cheaper FA DEs then perhaps Andre Carter or Brett Keisel. It would be nice to see some additions to a position where we have virtually no depth.

No point in going after Fabini if we can get someone cheaper. Plus Fabini is only worth a 2yr small contract, for about 2yrs now his talents have been on the decline. Also we likely will not sign a LB of high name, because we have three. Unless we find a mid-level guy that plays MLB. Orr is our SOLB and Greenwood is our WOLB. Wong will not be ready by training camp and likely not by the start of the regular season which will place either a rookie or low to mid level guy in the spot. We have an abundance of guys and personally a tough guy like Troy Evans or a rookie like McIntosh, Nande or someone of the sort seems like a good temporary replacement.

Not that i don't believe you, but where are you getting this info from specifically? Do you work for the team in some capacity or are an affiliate/associate of some sort? Just curious.

Fabini has played some LT throughout his career too, although you are probably right - He takes Wade's place. I haven't watched Fabini enough to know about his quickness, but he comes in around 305. Wade is much heavier. Remember, Denver's scheme favors quickness over brute strength and size. When comparing guys, you have to look at the system they are in. He may end up being a fine RT in this particular system. He has been an 8 yr starter on a good O-line. Let's not rain on this guys parade before it even starts. He may not be Jonothan Ogden, but this is also no Victor Riley. I would welcome this signing.

man fabini is half way down the down slope of his carrer.....i like o-lineman with a bit of anger to em and he has been a wet blanket for a while, overrated.

I agree with Coach C on this topic and the Givens topic.
We are going to spend a ton of $$$$ on Bush or Young.
We need to watch our spending and get more bang for our bucks. McNair stated in this mornings Chronicle that he doesn't have a problem spending some money.
We just can't put all our eggs in one or two baskets, we have a bunch of holes to fill. We don't want to go too far over the cap, in case someone gets injured and we need to pick up some else to fill in their spot.

You cannot get much bang for your buck when you are a 2-14 team...you can get 0 bang for 0 buck....but if you want any bang you must spend bucks...Nobody is going to give the hometown discount to a 2-14 team unless hes about 39 and wants to play his last year at home

i don't expect us to be very active this FA...in the article on the homepage they asked mcnair how the texans were going to be during this FA period and he acted like we didn't have much cash to be throwing around...when you think about how much of the cap space we have that we need to save up for the draft pool we probably are looking more at around 4 million tops i think

as far as free agents...i think we'll probably sign weaver...he'll be a solid guy for us who we won't have to spend a lot to get him...putzier i think will come to us for a little more than vet. minimum...if we can get givens all the better otherwise i think our attention will be focused on gaffney...one thing to keep in mind about our linebackers...i think you'll see us using peek and orr a lot like baltimore uses adalius thomas...where half the time we have them on the line and half the time we have them at the linebacker position...both are such good athletes and both are fit the tweener profile so good that is probably the best plan when dealing with those two...babin on the other hand needs to add some weight hit the gym and become worthy of the trade that we pulled to get him here

This is who I want...

Thank you for continuing your personal attacks on other members of this board, it would not be the same without your genuine insights.

The names mentioned were contacted, but proved too expensive. The team went in other directions, the different scenarios of possible targets is changing hourly.
